Page 2 THE MIAMI HERALD Saturday Oct 16 1943 Spotlighting Hurricanes Crush Camp Gordon 51-6 National Football Spotlight Shared By Five Games By EVERETT CLAY Bucks Meet Purdue Club In Midwest a ifc Stole Cardinals Thunder 't'HE NEW YORK YANKEES beat the St Louis Cardinals at their own game on the base paths in the World series confirms Sailor Whitey Kelley The ace baseball writer now in the Navy who took in the games in New York City was much talk aliout the Big City that the Yankees went into the playoffs with the idea of running and bashing Cardinal noggins whenever the situation presented writes Kelley on his first leave since entering the service 15 months ago wanted to find out if the Cards could take some cf the same stuff they had been dishing out for some time the throe games 1 saw the Yankees simply stole their thunder by stealing sacks and running like they owned the base paths The turning point of course was the savage block Johnny Lindell tossed sj Whitey Kurowskl in the third game causing him to drop the pill and leave runners on first and third and none out hired hands vvnr confused by the not-o-polite tactics of the once-caim and peaceful New Yorkers and never really recovered from the resulting shock After crash dive the Red Birds Kurowskl in particular issued dire threat about getting even The same never materialized for it was the Yankees who continued to pour it on at every Aside from brilliant base running and gallant pitching the biggest single factor in the victory was the great comeback made by Joe Gordon Kelley thinks never seen a better infielder than this fellow nor can ou imagine how good lie is until seeing him in the sailor says all over the place scooping up hard-hit ground balls with ea-e turning hits into outs That homer he hit in the opener was one of the longest balls seen It simply rifled into the stands about 425 feet from the plate breaks decided moi-t of the games here's a bit cf speculation on how the Yanks possibly might have taken four straight: home run Bay Sanders hit in the second game which later proved the deciding blow might have been caught had Lin-dell been plajing right field instead of Bud Metheny The blow a line drive bounced off glove as he attempted a leaping catch against the boxes only five foot 11 inches while Lindell reaches to six foot four inches and coaid have taken the ball without jnmping Take away that two-run homer and the Yank would have won 3 to 2 Nice if-come-thinking amazing to watch the Yankees They go along looking like an assorted collection of bums at the plate until a slight crack in the defense or a break gives them a base knock then they become a sharp-looking team banging bits at just -the right moment Several of the lads now wearing Yankee uniforms however would have to pay to see a series in ordinary times Likewise some of the Whitey points out that another factor overlooked In the' rush was the hitting of Yankee pitchers performed like well-paid outfielders when they took a stick in he writes Chandler started a rally in the first game with a siIer to left and later was robbed of a double or triple by Harry great running catch In the third game Hank double which bounced Into the left field stands led to a run and in the fourth Marins clipped a pair of doubles the second eventually becoming the winning Miami was able to make a 10-y Carney No 43 of service te ard punt return Friday night in the Orange Bowl stadium when am The Miamians won the game 51 to 6 16564 Fans Watch First Home Game By EVERETT CLAY Herald Sports Editor They wrecked the 10th Armored Division Tankers from Camp Gordon 51-6 Friday night at the Roddev Burdine-Orange Bowl stadium did our 10-13 Hurricanes I still tell you how good a football club Eddie Dunn has at the University of Miami The Camp Gordon team offered little more resistance than a sailor about to be kissed by Ann Sheridan and Eddie used his Inexperienced second and third stringers most of the night He would have nut in the fourth stringers I guess if had any Conservatively the Hurricanes could have run up 120 points had the youthful Miami coach kept the fleet-footed Arnold Tucker and the rest in the lineup USED I AMMUNITION As it vi as most of Touchdown Tommy's ammunition was used up firing the cannon for eight touchdowns and thr extra points to thp delight of the 16501 cash customers an turnout under the circumstances You could tell little against such weak opposition but the Hurricanes did do things indicative of a major league college football team They hit and hit hard harder than any University of Miami club I've ever seen The backs ran fast followed their interference and stop digging when contact was made with the first tackier There was co-ordination and harmony of a winning machine Last and not least there were signs of a spectacular passing attack Miami has long lacked The Hurricanes swept back 88 yards with the opening kickoff for a touchdown and kept on scoring with Tucker Paul Salvatore and A1 Rosen all getting a pair of six-pointers and Jim Leavitt and Bud Salvatore countering once each Tucker started it rolling on Nick boot bv wiggling 23 yards upfield Leavitt roared 13 yards through right guard and then slammed over the other side for 15 more- Tdeker skipped around right end to the Camp Gordon 24 The Tankers were penalized to the 3 for unnecessary roughness Leavitt exploded over guard for the touchdown SCOPED IN HURRY It was as simple as that and with less than three minutes gone there was a big seven alongside Miami on the Moreboard The Tankers stopped cold after the kickolf punted out and Tucker returned 38 yards to the 10 Watt's copyrighted reverse missed fire but it make any difference as Arnold highballed 14 yards off right tackle for the score After that Dunn put In the reserves Near the end of the first quarter Eddie quick kick bounced off one of the Tankers and Guard Bill Leavitt fell on it for Miami on the Camp Gordon 30 On the first plav Paul Salvatore picked up his own fumble popped through an opening at right guard and bounded across the goal line RETURNED PUNT 40 YARDS Paul Smith came back 40 yards with a punt mid-way of the second to set up fourth touchdown lie was pulled down on the Paul Salvatore picked up 8 at guard and Camp Gordon drew 15 for roughne-s This left it first and ten on the 14 and Paul Salvatore sped down the middle for the scoi Tucker intercepted Ralph amial on the third play of the second half and stepped on the gas for 18 aids to the Camp Gordon There and then the Hurricanes showed what thev could do with a forward pass Tucker popped a 7-yarder into Noah hands and followed with a 21-yard pitch to A1 Rosen to bring the score to C3-0 The Tankers had no more than received the kickoff than Brett tried another throw This time Tucker vent all the way on the interception 42 yards The All-Southern halfback from Miami High turned it on and off like a lightning bug down the south sidelines For a second time Eddie yanked bis regulars SMOTHERED A PUNT Near the end of the third quarter the Miami forward wall surged inrough to smother punt and Gene Tracy recovered for the Hurricanes on the Camp Gordon 9 But Salvatore went over from the 5 on the fourth try The Tankers rolled 65 vards against reserves in the' final period for a touchdown Tom Gug-hotta found pay dirt with a four-yard plunge over the right side Bud Salvatore made it 51-6 in the closing moments of play with a 36-vard throw- to Rosen on the goal line after Carden had dropped Joe Apoca for a 12-yard loss on a fourth-down pass attempt in Camp Goi don's open territorv How good are the Hurricanes?
