arranging a suitable place for his seventy-five hoar walk with Fred Krohne the Prussian Mr A Ladd treasurer of the late All-America 135-yards handicap at the New Hunting Park Philadelphia announces that for the purpose of arriving at a fair result he has ordered tbe fonr men in tbe final heat Ador Cunningham Russell and Garrity to appear upon thejr- respective marks to-day and be prepared to run off the disputed heat Any man fulling to be present will forfeit all claims to any part of the premiums A new referee and pistol-firer will be chosen and every effort will be made to have the heat decided upon its merits Lessons of sorts and sizes are drawn from the late regatta at Toronto but one indisputable lesson is that Canada remains as she always has been the champion in oarsmanship It Is merely a question what part of the Dominion shall produce the world's champion Sometimes it is Toronto sometimes it is Halifax sometimes it is St John but that is a local rivalry which does not concern the world without If Hanlan' after a time gets tired ot being champion his laurels will pass to Ross Ross in turn may pass them perhaps to Conley then to Hamm or some other rising Dominion rower The one thing tolerably safe to count npon at all times is that the best oarsman in the world is somewhere in the Canadian family -N Sun As an illustration of theconflict of opinions on sporting matters entertained by the editor and sporting editor of a daily paper these extracts from the New York News are pertinent examples In tbe first tbe editor says that Courtney was beaten in the Toronto siDgle-vcull race but he rowed well and evidently did bis best So he has gained something and if he will get himself in good condition which it is raid he was not in yesterday he may yet retrieve his reputation While in the same issue of the paper the sporting editor remarks that at the Toronto regatta Courtney did not have an attack of vertigo there was no wires nnder the water his boat was not sawed in two and yet he was hopelessly beaten Wallace Ross rowed all round him and Conley beat him easily The general impression is that he was beaten because he was jjutrowed this time Still the croakers will say Courtney is the fastest oarsman in the world and can beat Hanlan Tbe Cincinnati Enquirer says a scheme is on foot to organize a new base baljf association to include St Louis
