situation The present gasoline price war Whtch started about three weeks ago has brought the price in Sacramento to 16 cfrits for majir brands and 14 cents for independent products with some "chiselItg under the canopy" making it a Cent or two lower at some stations Cheaper Elsewhere In Los Angeles the center of the MI industry the retail price has dropped to as low as 5 cents a gallon and prices have dropped approximately 6 cents a gallon at other Pacific Coast points The war le occasioned PO the Mtars say by the need for them to Meet the competition nt the in lepenent companies which have been underselling the majors for Several months Probe Planned With the price war continuing the senate investigation of the oil companies has been advanced a week to March leth At Met time representatives of seventy-five oil companies will be called before a senate committee to answer questions as to causes behind the price War Senator Sharkey of Martinez chairman of the oil industries committee in the upper house ordered the inquiry after Governor James Rolph Jr bed declared that "something must be done" The committee also will investigate an alleged shortage of $1250060 in gas taxes due the state from various companies Sharkey said A bill requiring oil companies to pay gas taxes monthly is now before the legisinture as one means of coring existing tax collection Ills Another definite step toward realization of the project for an international highway extending from Alaska to South America has been taken This is according- to a report from Canada received by the California State Automobile Association The Canadian government has appointed three commissioners to serve with those already named by the United States to investigate the feasibility of making continuous the international highway which will link this country with Alaska by way of British Columbia and the Yukon Territory Representatives Some time ago the United States appointed as its representatives Ernest Walker Sawyer executive assistant to the secretary of the interior Major Malcolm Elliott chairman of the Alaska Highways Commission and Rice of Detroit The appointees named by Canada to represent the Dominion in the investigation are Wane chief engineer of the Dominion Parks Branch of Banff James McNeill of Dawson in the Yukon Territory and George Napier assistant chief engineer of the department of public works of British Columbia Inquiry In Spring It is expected that the inquiry into the possibilities of carrying out the highway project will be undertaken by the joint committee this Spring The existing section of the highway extends through British Columbia to Hazeiton which is approximately 1000 miles north of Seattle About SOO miles of highway remain to be constructed in order to join with the highway in Alaska providing a route that would enable motorists to drive from the United States as far north as Fairbanks Survey Miule Engineering surveys of the section to be traversed north of Hazelton have already been made by land and air parties Opening of the route would be of great importance to both the United States and Canada it is declared For Canada the highway would open a vast undeveloped area with rich mineral timber and fur resources For Americans it would provide a land route to Alaska Stripes And Plaids By MADAM CELE'al CELESTE Another one of those new Spring forecasts that I've been chattering about is the use of stripes and plaids Rather a ref reshing thought isn't it after all those miles and miles of printed silks? But of course you'll have to use these new ideas with a little discrimination or the feminine populace will look atrifle giddy I have selected two sports suits that would be simply grand for you to have this Spring to wear in the country the sort of thing you ought to have if you drive or tidt in a car a lot The figure at the right is wear ing a brown and yellow wool suit The loose jacket is brown and yellow plaid the skirt brown wool crepe and the blouse yellow crepe The hat scarf and other accessories are all dark brown The figure at the left is wearing a knee length coat of yellow green tweed with a brown diagonal stripe The dark brown fur collar forms a cape but may be pulled close around the neck for warmth The dress is dark brown jersey and silk with a green leather belt and the ''wrap around" beret is green jersey r-- zard and becomes a victim of the bitter cold and a stalled automobile in the Summer heat is not a pleasant experience to anticipate The desert has not changed with the passing decades Choking dust storms yet mark the Summers and raging blizzards the Winters A great white expanse with real hills and mountains surrounding and imaginary hills and even cities showing up in mirage in the Sum mer haze As smooth as the top of a billiard table and just about as firm the desert can be crossed by a modern auto almost in a matter of minutes the only limit to the speed of travel being the speed capacity of the machine in which one is traveling There are neither ditches rocks nor traffic cops and an occasional machine can be seen for miles The desert was named in the 40s for the big jutting black rock which is its chief landmark and whip IS visible for miles No Tourst Maps One will search in vain for tour let maps of this interesting region Just an immense area of western back country it is 'nevertheless with its historic associations its brooding stillness and its peculiar structure one with a strong appeal for those who love to wander far from the busy haunts of men Ith is 1 tour pgion niterrt isles its culiar ppeat tar Wise motorists always give a tire plug a wide berth a firs BIGHT OF WAY SOUGHT CHICO (Butte Co) March 11-- Additional rights of way to widen 'ose! thousands of head of cattle through the years has obliterated the graves of two emigrants buried there in early days although the spot is yet known An emigrant train encamped at this place where military protection was close at hand Two of the drivers engaged in argument and one struck the other over the head with a heavy wagon wrench killing him instantly Military judgment was short and swift The killer was tried sentenced and hanged by the neck to the elevated pole of a wagon almost before the body of his victim was cold The men were buried side by side There are several other graves of emigrants and soldiers in the vicinity marked only by dirt mounds or cairns of rocks Geyser Stream Going southeasterly from Soldier Meadows and Mud Meadows on the road to Winnemucca one passes Wheeler Spr ing and Flowing Spring The latter is an immense geyser-like column of water spouting from the rank grass meadow which its existence has created and Its life-giving waters saved many an early day traveler from death after traversing the arid country to the southwest Off to the east lies the Bad Lands a broken range of hills all cut up into little gullies and draws the dread of cowmen using the surrounding range One cannot see for fifty yards in any direction in these bad lands Not only do they harbor much game but bands of both horses and cattle gone wild find sanctuary there Old Mining Camp Almost on the south edge of this rough country is located the old mining camp of Hardin City long since abandoned and fallen into decay since its heyday of several decades ago when scores of men hunted for the traditional famous lost mine of the region Not far from this ghost town is Clapper Spring where Peter Lassen was killed Clapper Spring was named for his companion Off in the opposite direction are the Calico Hills and the traveler can hardly refrain from trying a few snapshots even with the full knowledge that the peculiar patterns will not register on the lens' of the camera The name of this bizarre range of rugged hills will naturally suggest itself to one's mind since no other term than "calico" could very well be applied to them traced as they are in fanciful patterns resembling this type of dress goods Black Rock Desert Coming from the northwest the Wheeler Ranch on the edge of the Black Rock Desert is a reality although to one coming from the opposite direction it could easily be mistaken for one of the mirages common in the region The oasis on the Wheeler Ranch was created by the drilling of wells which furnish a heavy flow of artesian water Eleven of these wells gush forth on the Wheeler Ranch the deepest being 165 feet They provide a never failing supply of water and Louis Valerdi who lives there with his family can look across the treacherous white wastes of the Black Rock Desert while standing beneath a peach tree in full bloom Seek Lost Mine A rather peculiar situation exists on a homestead nearby This place Is owned by Vogel and Edward Weiss Both men call themselves "desert rats" but both are highly educated and know many of the great cities of the world Weiss is a German-American while Vogel hails from the eastern seaboard Their main vocation when not working on thoir farm is searching for the famous lost mine of the region the same one it is said for which Peter Lassen was looking when he met his death a lifetime ago The hobby of the two men is a collection of data on old emigrant trails Their home is somewhat of a cross between a museum and a geologist's study while the little house and other ranch buildings stand in the middle of a manmade marsh These structures were built on the desert floor and on dry dry in fact The partners drilled a well near their home and the gushing stream which rewarded their efforts has resulted in a body of water spreading over a considerable area around the ranch buildings The two men are conducting experiments with various kinds of forage plants the while they walk around their home on duckboards since there is no higher lands to which their buildings can be moved Another incongruity of Western duck pond on one of the most inherently dry spots of the state 0 itU 11" WIIITg Atli 10 ine miming figures resemble "WI AllRWNTT bibs ek 1852 A Some indecipherable markings also appear although a Masonic emblem in the cave is yet visible Unfortanately some few writings are marred by scribblings of more recent years Emigrant Massacres There are probably few spots on the early emigrant trails more replete with pioneer history than this particular part of High Rock Canyon At least two emigrant massacres are known to have taken place- at or near this point and a good many minor Indian fights Not far from here Captain Levi Scott with one companion engaged in a fight with two Indians as early as 1844 Scott who as lieutenant to Lindsay Applegate played an important part in laying out the emigrant road through this region was on a scouting expedition with a man named Garrison Two Indians approache 1 them apparently in a friendly spirit When close by both 'savages suddenly discharged their 1 arrows Garrison fell mortally wounded and Seott's arm was pinned to his side by an arrow Wounded though he was Scott managed to kill one of the Indians the other saving himself by flight A few miles to the south lies Little High Rock Canyon which Is remembered as the scene of a 1 tragedy of comparatively recent' 1 years Here in February 1911 I Harry Cambron Peter Erra- mouspe Indian() and Lax1 agure Surprise Valley stockmen 'While searching for stray cattle were ambushed and murdered by Shoshone Mike and his band of Indians The campaign following in which the members of the band were exterminated by sheriffs' posses from Nevada and Califorina had all the features of a campaign of the 60's the Indians squaws and all chanting their death songs and passing to the happy hunting grounds with defiant warwhoops issuing from their throats Soldier Meadows Approximately westward from High Rock Canyon the way to Winnemucca leads close to Soldier Meadows formerly an important army post Here breaking out of the dry sagebrush hills one comes on a yeritable garden spot Lush meadow grasses planted trees and water in good-sized streams serve to emphasize the contradictory nature of the Western Nevada country A row of springs surrounds the ranch headquarters ranging from ice cold to almost boiling hot The present ranch buildings are the barracks built by the soldiers remodeled for ranch use A big barn which held 100 head of horses and connected with the mess hall and barracks by covered passages has been leveled but the mess hall' still does duty for the ranch headquarters although the two-foot thick stone walls are no longer necessary to ward off Indian attack Fort McCrary Off to the north lies old Fort McCrary located near Summit Lake and fast falling to decay The ruins of the old fort are the center of an Indian reservation The section around the old Fort has a big Indian population in the Summer months Some few of the old time Indians formerly on the warpath against the white men still live here but the bulk of the population is composed of younger generations of Paiute Indian Blood Calls The call of the blood is strong The young Indians well educated In modern schools are quite content to remain with their studies during the Winter months but when Spring comes the country around Summit Lake claims them Skillful horsemen they find here unlimited space to ride and fish and game are plentiful Some of the Indian families live in the bet' ter preserved of the old fort buildings others in structures ranging all the way from decent frame houses to brush and canvas wickiups If any Indian dies in one of the buildings it is abandoned forever and the family seek a new home Farman Brothers and other stockmen living in the country get along well with the Indians whom they frequently employ Strangers will not be molested by them in any way but on the other hand will meet with no open-handed hospitality The Indians prefer to be left undisturbed on the hunting grounds of their forefathers and this is yet their own property Bristles With Memories The Soldier Meadows Ranch in common with other points surrounding bristles with memories of they old days of the West and presents Incongruities as well A modern sedan stands parked beside a horse hitching post the tie rings of which came from an old emigrant ox yoke: an up-to-date coal burning cookstove sends its smoke through a stone flue built by blue-coats of Civil War days: the barrel of an old Kentucky long rifle is doing duty as a poker and a radio Is bringing in lasl-minute news from a city 2000 miles away A couple of vaqueros ride into the ranch yard Horse and man they are accoutered almost preeisely Re were their prototypes of fifty years ago An immense pyramid of sagebrush in the yard reminds us that this is the only native fuel for miles in this comparatively treeless country Recently a rather wonderful discovery was made by one of the Farman brothers when an almost unexplored canyon seven miles from the ranch house was found to contain hundreds of wagonloads of heavy virgin sagebrush Coal is used only as a supplementary fuel since it must be hauled seventy miles frmt Winnemucca by truck and sagebrush
