Governor Young on the speaking program after a gracious introduction by the executive "I did not expecti to come here and ber presented in the big broad way which you have done" he said speaking directly to Governor Young "I' came here illed with pride that you and Mrs Young had invited Mrs Rolph and myself to come here for governorli day I came here not to make an address but to tell you how your invitation has penetrated my heart "Your generosity and the way in which you have just presented me Is a lesson throughout California It is a lesson in the political life of our country It is a lesson which will carry your name on the history of the state Feels Great Honor "I have been honored by my fellow Californians with the Republican nomination I intend to continue the fight and if I am further honored with the governorship I shall strive to continue the advancing work which you have carried on in this state "I shall endeavor as you have done to eradicate sectionalism ta California "I congratulate the men you have gathered around you on the State Fair Board and if I am honored with the high position you now hold I shall strive to continue the development of this State of California and to make this State Fair what we all hope it shall be "As long as I live I shall remember this day sir and Mrs Young I shall remember the kindly spirit in which you and Mrs Young invited Mrs Rolph and me here on Governor's Day I shall always remember the fine spirit of sportsmanship which you have exhibited within the week after our battle" Next Governor Governor Young introduced Governor Young in opening "I feel very gratified with the showing we have made with the State Fair It has been a very wonderful four years for me In those four years the State Fair has so Impressed itself upon the people of the state that it has grown beyond the boundaries of California The time is coming when it is inevitable that this will be a great Western States Exposition where the sister may come and 'see what the West is doing in agriculture "Under the ten year building program which I imagine will be continued by succeeding administrations we have advanced materially Pleads For Building "I wish to make a plea here today for a building which will house permanent exhibits of the various denartments of the state government These permanent exhibits could be installed in the building In Sacramento and could be taken to various fair throughout the state I offer this as a suggestion "The Fair this year is a wonderful show I hope the time will come when every county of California will be represented here not fifty-two but fifty-eight counties will have exhibits In the machinery building whirl we have here the farmer can see in a counle of hours what it would take him a couple of months to see going from place to place Praises Condee "Mr Conde and the board working with him have striven to make things like this possible They have made the fair educational The minute the fair ceases to be educational its usefulness shall cease Agriculture and livestock are the basic industry of California and will continue to be for some time as the agriculture and attractions for the State Fair to be merely a "state of mind" Foley declared that his show has grossed more in California this season on appearances in every town or city where a celebration was in progress than they did last year although there was a noticeable falling off in business in towns where celebrations were not in progress Have Money To Spend This is taken by Foley as an Indication that the people In general have money to spend on tonusements It they are presented to them under the proper circumstances At the State Fair so far this year Foley's show has grossed more than it did during appearance at the record-breaking 1929 State Fair although the fair gate this year has been less "I really believe" said Foley "that much of the so-called depression exists solely In the mind Throughout the state we have found the people spending their money for amusement at the celebrations The season in California this year has been very successful Is Merely Talk "I have noticed that one long-faced drummer can go Into a small town or city and spread more gloom than can be dispelled in a whole season by repeating over and over again a hard luck story about poor business conditions I
