MAIN National Suicide^Prevention Center Is By LOUIS CASSELS WASHINGTON .(UPI) — The National Institute of Mental Health is establishing a suicide prevention center in an effort to cope with the dimly understood inner torments which annually drive at least 20,000 Americans to kill themselves. Dr. Stanley. F. Yolles, director of the institute, made the announcement today in a papei prepared for delivery before a seminar on suicide sponsored by the George Washington University. School of Medicine. Twelve of the world's leading authorities on suicide took part in the day-long seminar, one of .the few scientific meetings ever devoted solely to the problem I of self-destruction. . . I Large Number ; Yolles said the actual numbei of suicides in the United States doubtless is "far 'greater" than the.officially reported 20,000 a year, because many suicides a re listed cs "a c c i d e n t a 1 deaths." Even at the official figure, he .said, suicide-, "is the tenth leading cause of death in this, country." The new suicide prevention center ,will be part of the huge National Institutes of Health complex operated by the U.S. Public Health Service in suburban Bethesda, Md. It will conduct research into the causes of suicide, symptoms ol suicidal intent, and "techniques for aiding the suicidal individual." It also will disseminate to doctors, clergymen, police, edir- cators and others throughout the nation .the (best available data on how to cope with the suicide problem. And it will provide support ,for experimental regional and local projects in suicide prevention. Ffrst National Project Suicide prevention centers have been set up in several cities, but this'is" the first such project on a national scale. Dr: Jack P. Gibbs, professor of sociology at Washington State .University, told the se- ininar that the national suicide rate is approximately 10 deaths annually per 100,000 population. Within this national average, he said, there-are wide variations from group to group. The suicide rate tends to rise with age, reaching a level of 26 per 100,000 among persons 85 and older.
