San Rafael A demeription of the benefits which this road will realize for the delta area will be coered in ten paragraphs A complete circle of the upper bay lying north of San Francisco so laid out that It has the smalleet circum ference of mileage possible will al ways be a very attractive route for pleasure automobiles and will connect by the shortest possible route the thriving industrial cities set around the upper bay shore This dr de will traverse seven Francisco Alameda Contra Costa Napa Sonoma and Mann It will connect up the cities of San Francisco Oakland Albany Richmond Crockett Vallejo San Rafael and Banal The milage of this route will be such that it can be easily made on a Sunday afternoon drive At present the missing link IN the prcponed new road from Vallejo to Sears Point Will 58V Mitre The proposed new road will make a saving of a distance of twenty miles from San Francisco to Vallejo via San Rafael At present it is nee essary in the driving from San Fran CISCO to Vallejo via San Rafael to con titan north along the Black Point Cut-off at Sears Point to Shel 'villa and Napa and thence south fourteen miles to Vallejo Besides the saving of twenty mile there will be elim hated several miles of road up to 7 per cent gradient and at least six railroad crossings The distance by automobile from San Francisco to Sacramento via San Rafael and Napa the existing route w'll be reduced five miles in running over the proposed new road from Vallejo to Sacramento in addition to the elimination of several mile of grade up to 7 per cent and at least four railroad crossings The proposed island road will pro vide a very good alternate route from San Francisco to Sacramento via San Rafael and Vallejo which will attract much of the traffic which now goes via Oakland and Crockett Auto Proposed road and discusses the matter as follows: There is an area of very fertile delta lands lying in the triangle toss points are Vallejo Napa and Ignacio which is bounded on the west by the Napa River on the south by Han Pablo Bay and on the north east by Sonoma Creek and other sloughs This area is now held In large hold-Inge of from several hundred to many thousands of acres It is divided into salami islands by sloughs which wind their way through the delta connecting Sonoma Creek with Napa River and an Pablo Bay The better known of these islands are Cross Island or Island No I which has been recently purchased by Eva Ricks Island No 2 Knight Island Tubbs Island Russ Island Bray Island and others This district is not now traveled by any through country or State road The highway from Vallejo to Napa Iles on the easterly side of the Napa River and there is no bridge crossing the Napa River for automobiles or wagons between Vallejo and Napa tRate Highway connecting Napa with Han Rafael via the Black Point Cut-off skirts this area on the north and west but Iles about five miles distant from the heart of the district and is not provided vitt outlets to the district with even earth roads Rote of Rood It is now advocated that this difficulty be overcome by constructing a good hard-surfaced road from Vallejo along the north shore of San Pablo Bay traveling Cross and Tubbs Ill-ands and conneeting with the state highway near Sears Point at the northeast end of Black Point Cut-off The construction of this proposed rcad will accomplish at least ten desirable objects which will promote to a wonderful degree the conven lence and comfort of through automobile traffic from the Bay Cities to Sacramento and the development of the delta area as well as its contiguous cities of Napa Vallejo Santa Relationship Between California and Chinese Birds to Be Shown in Yosemite The new uidsmobile "eight" has been exhibited at leading automobile shows during the past few months without a price Thousands' of people have seen it admired it and pronounced it a truly fine remarkably compact soundly built splendidly finished automobile These opinions have confirmed our judgment a new standard has been achieved in the realm of medium-size high-powered multi-cylinder cars At the national shows it was freely predicted that this "eight" would win nation-wide recognition the price was right" And the price now announced for the first time is so It is several hundred dollars lower than the average estimate of the car's worth You have only to familiarize yourself with the photographs specifications and performance capabilities of this car to appreciate the literal truth of this statement of fact The other night Constable Newt bailed a fellow for speeding but the speeder went right on without paying any attention to him Constable Newt didn't get the number of the ear but figured he could locate the guilty party by the marks which the tires left in the road He gave up his search yesterday when be discovered that the marks were made by a Hewitt tread Life is too short to try and check up on all the cars equipped with Hewitt Tires Constable Newt opined One night last week Amos' Applegate owner and manager of Applegate's store smelled gas He lit a candle and went down in the basement to find the leak Mrs Amos Applegate wife of Amos Applegate owner and manager of Applegate's store is waiting on the customers these days $1985 HERE Relationships between Chinese and Californian wild birds will be pointed out this year by Nature Guides in Yosemite National Park One common Yosemite bird which has Asiatic cousins is the kingfisher The American species modeatly garbed in gray is found along mountain streams nesting in a hole in the bank The Chinese species however I a brilliant blue Sections of ths latter's feathers are used In making the wonderful kingfisher feather inlay work of Canton Along Yosemite trails everyone finds a bird a mammal a wild flower or perhaps a tree that is new Why not seize the opportunity for making a friend of it? Learn its name Have the joy of greeting it every following vacation To help with inch 'problems the free Nature Guide Service is offered For this purpose high-power biologists will be in Yosemite National Park this year Dr Bryant sf the University of California who knows intimately Sierra trails will be there Dr Loye Miller of the Los Angeles branch of that institution will entertain visitors with his imitations of wild bird music that last Winter charmed select Eastern audiences Last year these scientists conducted nature study field excursions They directed sleeping bag trips into the high Sierras which are Yosemite's Backof-Beyond They kept office hours in Yosemite Village to answer questions They also conducted a wild flower show continuously through the season They assisted 27047 vie lion to a better knowledge of the miracles of Yosemite's out-of-doors This will be offered again under the Joint auspices of the National Park Service and the California Fish and Game Commission The California Nature Study League which is co-operating in this work will again have compact nature study libraries to assist Yosemite visitors ''st Le f-L 1 ae 011 ot-- 4 42-4 Purdy Pell is a criminal law yer but no one has proved it on him yet mobile touriets if offered an alternate road through attractive country side and marine scenery such as this new route will afford will use it in ever-increasing numbers This new road will also avoid the congested streets of Oakland and Berkeley which are hot attractive to a motorist who after he once pelmets out of Sacramento or an Francisco prefers to have an open road through the country intervening Upper Bay 'Circle The seven Bay Counties mentioned above inclosing the upper Bay will commend this new highway as a completion of a cloning up of the upper Bay circle of good roads over the shortest possible route giving access to every good road along the Bay shore The greatest addition to the wealth of California's agricultural resources will be made and 18000 acres contisr'sous to this new road will be brought close to market Part of the 25000 acres mentioned above comprising the delta lands is served by the existing roads along the north and west so that 1 may safely say that 18000 acres consists of the richeat land in lalifornia when reclaimed and drained by the most Improved engineering methods of to-day As a direct route from Vallejo to Santa Roca it will be commended by a large number of automombile owners' of thoae two counties and the populace of Sonoma Valley To the north coast counties from Eureka to Santa Botta It will be a great boon as it will give a Bay shore drive by tha shortest route from the upper corst country to Vallejo and from Vallejo to the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys or across the straits' II the cities of Contra Costa and Alameda Counties Military Ponsibilities The new and extensive highway system being constructed by Sonoma Cot nty and the State Highway Commission in the counties of Mario Sonoma and Napa will be very much enlarged in UnPfUltlefin by eonnecting up this island road with them As a military road for direct and quick transportation of the heavy tonnage crested by war conditions it will give a direct route from Mare Island Navy Yard to the coast defenses lying north of Fort Baker along the Mario shore which must in time of war be protected to prevent the enemy landing in force and attacking the Bay industrial district from the rear To the city of Vallejo which now bas a population of 25000 people and tho large industry established on Mare Island Navy Yard such a highway would be an immediate advantage and incalculable benefit It would provide the city of Vallejo with a back country of land which will produce immense Quantities of products such as truck graden produce canned vegetables and fruits forage crops dairy products and a great variety of agricultural produce which the rich delta lands of California are famous for This is an addition to our State and County Highway system In the vicinity pf the upper Bay which arpeale immediately to a business man an engineer transportation man or automobile owner It is a project which should be investigated at once by competent engineering forces and the entire list of possibilities and benefits of the project set forth to the traveling public and transportation
