existing for me to get up and make any statement at all on this matter" Carmichael read to the Commission letters he had received from the Mayor of Stockton the Assessor of Oakland and others highly recommending Klink Bean Company as experts Simmons For Coatinuaace Simmons argued for a continuance to Thursday to give Atkinson an opportunity to offer a lower figure when Coulter said: "I am very anxious that this expert be employed at once I don't want any delays In all fairness Atkinson is the lowest bidder" "How do you figure that?" asked Carmichael "No bids ever were asked for nor opened" Simmons lumped Into the argument by calling Carmichael down for arguing while in the chair and Carrnicliae1 replied that he would talk all he wanted to Arguments Become Personal "You don't need to think you are going to shelve me" said Carmichael after which Simmons came back with the remark that "this is no school room" When the motion for continuance was made by Turner and seconded by Simmons to defeat a vote to-day on the employment of Klink Bean Company Carmichael said he was opposed to any further delay for the reason that Coulter wanted to have someone on the job right away and has asked for an early report Later in the afternoon Turner announced Atkinson would not take the job cheaper Oak Paik OAK PARK February 4 Mrs Edward Hyatt entertained a group of a dozen friends at her The records show that with a single exception the men who worked in the hop fields were correctly paid by the city And this single exception may be explainable upon further investigation More sirseationso And the facts concerning William Gregory and A Tyree were exactly the same For an examination of the records of the city discloses that in 1917 neither of these men took any vacation (except in the hop fields) and they were entitled to compensation from the city while on their vacations Now as to the case of Jensen the city records ahoy that at the time in controversy he had taken no vacation Subsequent thereto and from December 3 to December 8 1917 he was absent one week On pay As he had worked in the hop fields one day in excess of a week Jensen after he had been paid by Nir Coulter took one day more vacation time than he was entitled to There were fourteen men sent to the hop fields For classification these men may be divided into two groups The first group contains the men who did not draw vacation time while working in the hop fields The second group contains the men who drew vacation pay from the city while working on the ranch: (The statement then Rites a list of men who were on the city payroll for a short time about whom there is no controversy) Calls It Ilawdens "'Vacation" Explaining concerning the men who drew double is both from Coulter and from the city the statement says: As Bawden's case has been given prominence let us consider it first He drew full pay as a worker in the hop fields as his receipt for 928 shows and $54 as foreman of the city gang as the cancelled city voucher proves And Bawden was lawfully and morally entitled to such double pro- ment He took no time off in 1917 from his city work except when working in the hop fields He was entitled to double pay while thus working and was but performing a patriotic duty in assisting in the agricultural work of the community as did many other of our citizens in the Summers of 1917 and 1918 Bawden received only what he was entitled city was not defrauded of a and neither Coulter nor James profited at all by the transaction Admit litrmtk in story There remains then only two more men to Ortiz and Brunner The city records disclose that each of these men took their full vacation in addition to being absent at the hop fields for a week Brunner's vacation was taken between November 12th and November 24th 1917 and after he had been paid by Mr Coulter John Ortiz 'had already taken his vacation when he worked in the hop fields His was the only such case and out of the fourteen stands alone Brunner and Ortiz each received from the city while working on the hop fields about $18 more than should have been paid them This represents a total loss to the city of 936 whose profit accrued not to Coulter or James but to the men who took more vocation HMO am were entitled tto 836 whose profit accrued not to Coulter or Junes but to the men who took more vacation thitA LIM were entitled to The Sacramento Commissioners voted unanimously to-day to cancel $195000 worth of bonds voted some time ago as part of a high pressure water system here The cancellation came about after the opposing by Commissioner Carmichael of the purchase of $190g0 worth of Corey hydrants To-day Commissioner Otte Turner Introduced a resolution calling for the cancellation of the bonds which represent the money saved by changing the Sacramento water system If the $19000 worth of hydrants are now to be bought the money will have to come from Commissioner Coulter's Public Works fund or the general fund of the Commission Berry Plants Rad Vines Asparagus and rhubarb Sae Nursery 1103 tadv WI 111011 chocolates same old price Pat Hurd 812 IC Street sole die tributor tad?
