For a change of pace, you can take a stroll around the wharf. There are plenty of gift shops to amuse young and old. And if you wish to eat out for a treat, there are three restaurants the Castaways, Wind Sea and Jolly Rogers.

A fourth one, Red Onion, will open soon. Most of all, Dana Point Is an easy one tank of gas weekend from San Bernar-' dino. It's only a 90-minute drive, freeway all the way, with plenty of parking space when you arrive, except on a hot summer Sunday when it. is almost impossible to find anyplace to park near your favorite Southland beaches. For camper-trailer buffs, Doheny State Park Is just south of Dana Wharf jetty.

This large campground and day-use park Is one of the most popular in the Southland. Reservations can be made for the campground through Ticketron. Daily charge per campsite is $3, while the day-use fee is only $1 per car. There are 115 campsites and 146 picnic sites in this spacious oceanfront park, one of the most modern in the State Park system. In summer this is an excellent swimming beach.

Orange County Park District also has a new campground adjacent to the harbor. There are 30 to 40 kle. Best bait for opaleye is frozen green peas, just like the kind you get at the supermarket. Part-time sailors don't need their own boat here since you can rent a skiff, rowhoat or sailing craft at the Embarcadero Marina. Popular 14-foot fishing skiffs (with motors) rent for $6 an hour or $18 for a half day.

For sailors, there are 14-foot sloops at $5 an hour which must be used inside the breakwater. For sailing in open water there are 21-foot Victory sloops for $8 an hour or 23-foot Coronados at $35 for four hours. (Rental rates decrease proportionately when you rent for periods longer than an hour.) you can try a hand at deep-sea fishing on the boats that leave daily from this same pier. In winter, the main catch is rock cod which are taken on heavy tackle, fishing the floor of the ocean. The fare on an all-day fishing boat is $12 for adults and $7 for children age 12 and under.

The half-day fare is $7.50 and $4.50 for children. Whale-watching excursions leave the dock at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. this month, with a fare of $3 for adults and $2 for children. Fishing from the jetties is free.
