Where's that team which held Georgia Tech conqueror of the team which beat Yale for three periods? What became of the boys from Atlanta who came down to slaughter a team which It must be admitted expected to be a helpless victim? For another big crowd of Miamians went out to the arena yesterday to the Invading lions munch on various Miami boys And they remained through a second half rainstorm to watch this same Oglethorpe team working desperately to protect a 13 to 0 lead they had picked up In the flret half And the so-MUed mighty Oglethorpe team yesterday was but one touchdown better than the Buckless Hurricanes True they got a couple but the one was earned and the other was a gift from the' generous Miami backs Oglethorpe yesterday was playing a Miami team that tackled better than at any time this year The visitors deserved to win of course but they did not find a bunch of Hurricanes acting like anything but hurricanes Tho home guards were tackling hard and fighting every Inch of tho way Thera was no question about that strength yesterday True wo didn't think Oglethorpe showed anything near tho speed and power of tho Howard team But on tho other hand Miami forwards occasionally were slicing through and tackling behind the line and the Hurricane defensive backs wers running to tho plays Instead of standing and waiting for them The earns old record can be put on tho machine with regard to tho stars thb Miami team it was Rod Ashman once more who spilled Interference and dragged Petrels to earth until the visitors had battered him unmercifully They got him out of the game in tho first half but ho came back limping in tho last half and gave a great defensive exhibition It was Kimbrough generally who busted through and slapped Petrele to earth ere they had departed for the great open spaces And It was Cliff Courtney again who tackled desperately who knocked down pRsses who ripped through the lino with tho ball and who tossed the few passes which gained ground for the homefolks It was Courtney too who grabbed a Petrel pass intended for a loving arms and scampered 45 yards before he was tossed out of bounds on ths 8-yard line But there were other Hurricanes In jhe ball game yesterday Tobey Lyons got In there and made a couple of tackles Sutton took an awful beating but stayed In there Bleler played a nice defensive game and Kldwell and LIndstrom were doing a lot for the cause A steady drive down the field In the second quarter gave the 'Petrels their first touchdown Garllngton going over from the two-yard line and Vaughn booting the extra point Then the Hurricanes handed them another six points Immediately after the kickoff following the touchdown the Hurricanes got the ball deep In their own territory Then something went wrong Carbonneau may have gummfed the signals someone else may have forgotten i But anyway perfect pass from center went Into the backfleld with nary a Hurricane there to receive It Straight toward the Miami- goal line it went with Augle Mills In pursuit Mills tried to piak up the ball on the run but kicked It instead and It rolled on over ths goal line with a flock of Petrels there Clement was ths lad who fell on it for the touchdown Vaughn's kick was bad Buch a boner was enough to discourage almost any club but not those Hurricanes of December They battled on through the half and came back just as strong In the last half The visitors ware more powerful on offense In the second half too but never could make a concentrated drive for anything that looked like a touchdown And the Hurricanes thanks to brilliant sprint by Cliff Courtney dern near crossed the goal line 'Twas In the middle of the third quarter that Cliff grabbed one of passes on the 47-yard- line and started on his long trek north ward Various Petrels got In Cliff's way but he stepped around and over them In a desperate try for the much coveted touchdown And not until he had lugged the ball to the 8-yard line were the Petrels abla to run him out of bounds Three yards to go for a touchdown! Visions of a Miami touchdown were In every eye But 'twas not to be On the first play Courtney tried an end run and was smeared for a three-yard loss Ted Bleler hit the line for a couple of yards Then Courtney passed to Ashman over the goal line but a desperate visitor knocked down I1BEM1RIL Florida Closes Season With 7 To 6 Victory On Muddy Field JACKSONVILLE Dec 3 A placement kick for the extra point after touchdown from the toe of Stanley 'Gator end won a lucky victory for Florida over the University of Maryland here today by a score of 7 to 6 Playing on a sodden field unfamiliar to both teams this season the 'Gators scored their touchdown early In the second quarter after "Crafty Crabtree stellar quarterback had returned a Maryland punt to the old 38-yard line Mlddlekauff carried the ball over the Maryland goal from the one-yard line after Brumbaugh and Crabtree had alternated In a drive down the field Shortly thereafter Roberts an outstanding star of the game slipped through left tackle" evading tho Florida secondary defense for a 38-yard run across the line In trying for the extra point however Kessler chose to pass and failed 1 Previously in the first few minutes of play Florida narrowly averted defeat when Bishop was downed behind his own goal line for what would have been a safety had the old liners not been ruled off side and the play recalled The pass front center to Bishop was high and went over the halfback's head During the later half of the game the Florida goal was continuously In danger Only twice was the play In Maryland territory and but for only a few minutes Twice the Old Liners threatened to score only to be held by the Una Yvlthin a yard Or two their goal Late the fourth period however a fumble by Pugh on Florida's one-yard line lost the game for his team mates Mlddlekauff Crabtree and Brumbaugh alternated as ground gainer for the Gators while with a few exceptions Bishop's punting from behind his ojvn goal line repeatedly averted 'possible touchdowns Roberts right halfback for the Old Liners played a sensational game throughout and frequently behind splendid interference reeled off gains of five and more yards Roberts excelled In the punting exchange with his Gator opponent particularly during the latter half of the game sending the ball Ont of bounds within a few yards of the Florida goal Dodson Wondrackand Adams vied for honors in the Old forward wall Mlddlekauff retiring captain-fullback ended his career as a Gator In a blaze of glory ripping the Maryland line open during the last two plays of the game for successive first downs Florida Position Mirylind Rtanlrr le llod-utn Clmsutt it Hr in Allen If M'-bunl4 KirarhDef Bttonl rx Cre'h-r Brian rt Aina rlrkle frtitre Kelrr Brumbaugh lh Rnb-ru Bi-hup ri Thomas Mlddlekauff Llnkut Score by periods: Fiord 0 7 0 Mar land 6 6 0 -6 Florida: Touchdown Mlddlekauff point after touchdown Stanley (placement) Marytend Ttaichdown Roberta Officials: Ernie Quigley (Kansas) ref-r-e Branch Bocock (Georgetown umpire Jlat Perry fSewanrei beadlinesman Ed Foster (William and Maryl umpire HAIR-GROOM Keeps Hair Combed Glossy Well-Groomed Day la a dignified combe Ing cream which costs only few cent a jar at any drugstore Millions use tt because it gives that natural gloss and well-groomed effect to the hair that final touch to good dress both in business and on Social occasions Even stubborn unruly or shampooed hair stays combed all day In any style yon like Is greaseless also helps grow thick heavy lustrous hair Advertisement "gif -r jaf y2 fi 5 'i -1' 1 i -t 'S'Jt ft! Fred Wignall made some mighty neat tackles the short time he was in there And this Ashman person was hitting them low and cleanly Something was wrong In the center of the Miami line On that play in which Vaughn faked a lateral pass and then dashed straight through the Hurrlcnnes were caught asleep time after time It was a happy crow'd for the bugs were seeing real football out there with two teams fighting hard Courtney was punting better yesterday He slice so many of them out of bounds The defense still lets men sift through too fast and the klrker has to hurry Georgetown College of Kentucky comes to town next Saturday and those Hurrlcadtes are going to give 'em a scrap Just watch THOSE WET WET WATER He who borroweth his gun should remain on land the pass and the big chance was over Those Petrels started the game as If they were going tb walk away with things After Courtney had kicked off to Bass who returned the kick 10 yards to hi 30-yard line the visitor started a steady march down the field Base went off left tackle for four then around right end for 12 Fox Vaughn and Bass then battered their way to the Miami 20-yard line where the Hurricanes held and Vaughn tossed an Incomplete pass over the goal line Throughout the first quarter this was repeated Miami never carried the ball once Courtney punting every time they took the oval away from the visitors Sometimes the Petrels were stopped cold by the Miami forwards sometimes their passes wers Intercepted by the alert Miamians but always the visitors were stopped short of a touchdown As the second quarter opened Tall-fera and White went Into the Oglethorpe backfleld and a procession began which ended across the Miami goal line The Petrels repeatedly worked a fake lateral pass play with Vaughn or Tallfero suddenly turning and dashing through a hole In the center of the Miami line This play gained much ground Another favorite of the Petrels was a terrific smash off left tackle which seldom failed them Short gains of from five to eight or 10 yards carried the visitors over the goal line Garllngton wiggling across from the two-yard line Then came the famous touchdown act staged by the Miami backs which the visitors seemed to appreciate greatly Then Instead of curling up and quitting this bunch of Hurricanes went out to do a little scrapping It was about this time that Simms visiting lineman and Big Boy Catha of the Miami squad got Into a little argument And Mr Simms growing a bit personal tweaked Mr Catha's nose right enthusiastically Mr Catha took exception to this and told Mr Hill the referee that "you hadn't ought to let him do things like that So Mr Hill asked Mr Simms to rest awhile and penalized the vlsltore some 25 yards as a sort of ointment to Catha's injured proboscis But though the IJurrlcanes did get down Into Oglethorpe territory ooca slonally they seldom were danger ous They simply dent the line and their passing game consistent enough to score Once Bleler on a fake lateral pass play clipped off 11 yards around left end Three times Courtney banged passes Into the waiting arms of his friends But those were only flurries And after that failure to score when th boys had four downs to make three yards there wasn't much hope left though the fans stuck with the team to the end Late In the game Courtney threw caution to the winds and passes to Mills and Lyons for gains of 20 and 10 yards respectively but the final whistle stopped this belated rally Miami (0) Foaitlon Oglethorpe (131 A'hmaa la Clement Hauler It R'me llndstrom If Guthrie Kimbrough Huteon
