out of the twelve to sixteen usually emplojedln handling lumber was at work The stevedores have no organization and consequently are not backed by the Federated Trades or other body of Labor Unions A num-bur of men were at work handling general freight and Howard Johnson manager for the Company was of the opinion that all dlferenees existing the Impending trouble relates to steam between the men and the Company wld be speedily sealed It appears the stevedores make a double demand upon the Company In the first place they demand the discharge of Joseph Levy from hla present position of head stevedore claiming he Is discriminating against the men under him Again the men demand a fixed rate of J8 a day or 40 cents an hour for their labor These demands were recently presented to the Sacramento Transportation Company with the declaration that If they were not compiled with by this morning a strike would be the Company was asked this morning what the trouble was between him and the men under him He said he knew of no trouble whatever except that the men demanded more money than they are now receiving He admitted however that only one man out of twelve to sixteen was at work but Indicated that everything would be straightened out ln a very short time Troubles of Deckhanda It was reported this morning that strike of deckhands employed on the river steamers would take place next Monday but Investigation showed that ers running out of San Francisco The Southern Pacific Company has two boats and the Sacramento Transportation Company one boat which may be affected by the
