Press Sports Writer MEW YORK Sept The magnificent "mow 'em down" momentum of the Brooklyn Dodgers carried the National League pen rant fight down to the last day of the season today when they crushed the first-place Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 for their thirteenth victory In the last 16 games The Phillies so confident two days ago when they needed only one more victory to clinch their first pennant In 35 years now have to win it tomorrow or force the teams into a three-game pennant playoff which would begin in Brooklyn on Monday On the brink of the most dismal collapse in baseball history the Phillies blew their game today because they had no one to match the home-run smashes of Duke Snider and Roy Compendia Two strong young right-handers Bob Miller of the Phillies and Erv Palica of the Dodgers were Game to Be Aired On WRNL Today The final game In the series between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Brooklyn Dodgers for the National League pennant will be broadcast today aver Generals By Chauncey Durden Times-Dispatch Sports Editor PHILADELPHIA Sept After wasting its power prodigally during the first half powerful Pennsylvania co-ordinated its running and passing games in the third period to score three touchdowns and defeat the University of Virginia 21-7 on Franklin Field this gloomy gray afternoon With the Cavaliefs leading 7-0 at the half on a first-quarter 60-yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Rufus Barkley to Halfback Steve Osisek most of the Penn supporters among the crowd of 40000 spectators were resigned to another typical Penn display of wasted power But with buck-lateral series of plays added to their old single-wing attack the Quakers struck early and often after the half After three minutes and 48 seconds of the third period had elapsed captain Frincis (Reds) Bagnell lobbed a pass to' End Tom Hanlon that was good for 28 yards and a touchdown At the 11-minute 28-second mark of the same period Blocking Back Dave Coulson passed to Sophomore victory over the University of Richmond Spiders A sparse crowd of only 8500 saw the Deacs in their- first home contest A Richmond fumble in the early minutes of the opening quarter set up the first touchdown Recovering on the 14-yard line Wake Forest scored in exactly four plays with Quarterback Ed Kis-sell passing seven yards to Halfback Guido Scarton Midway of the first period the Deacs moved covering 47 yards Six minutes later the Tribe took advantage of a fumble and cashed in with Ed Mioduszewski hitting Yewcic who was standing on the goal line with a scoring pitch But even that would Times-Dispatch Sports Writer LYNCHBURG Sept Led by Gil Bocetti the wonderful workman Washington and Lee this afternoon greeted Art (Pappy) first University of West Virginia football team by whacking the Mountaineers 26-7 before a Municipal Stadium crowd of 8000 Lewis who coached the Generals from 1946 through 1948 saw his day end in disaster as Bocetti passed pitched ran and faked the Generali to their first triumph over the Mountaineers since 1930 and their fifth of a 55-year-old series West Virginia which officially became a member of the Southern Conference this Fall and which was playing
