Miami University of Oxford Ohio Sun Bowl champions Coach Art Guepe's team fought a gallant game but the Redskins of Coach George Blackburn not only matched the Cavaliers in never-quit stubbornness but also on the scoreboard Virginia opened hostilities with' CHARLOTTE Sept William and smooth-working football squad holding bark for the clash with Wake Forest next week sailed to a 14-to-6 win over Davidson tonight with the reserves carrying the action after the first period Some 10000 chilled fans watched the William and Mary workout The third team brought Into ter pass to the End Ben Proctor six-foot-three-inch sophomore All that scoring concentrated in the very first period Thereafter until midway of the fourth quarter the game settled down to a dogged defensive battle The going was shak- GW Blanks Tech 13-0 In Opener BLACKSBURG Sept CP-Sparked by a hard-charging line and the running of Freshman Andy Davis the George Washington Colonials upset Virginia Tech 13-0 in a Southern Conference tilt here today A seaspn-opener crowd of 11 000 in Miles Stadium saw the once-beaten Colonials completely outclass the Gobblers to spoil the coaching debut of Bob Me-Neish The Colonials singlp-wlng attack rolled up a total of 202 yards rushing The best the Gobblers could do working from a formation was a meager 27 yards net gain on the ground George Washington marked up its first touchdown midway of the second period Davie returned a Tbch punt to the Tech 46 to set up the tally Two plays later he rifled a pass that was intended for End Henry Bartellonf The ball bounced off fingertips as he leaped in tjie air and it was snatched before it hit the ground by Jim Kline who was downed on Tech's six Kline skirted left end for the score on the next play Colonials Strike Again The Colonials struck again in the third period After GW took possession on the 50 Davis reeled off gains ot 16 nine five and two yards as the Colonials powered to the Tech four-yard stripe in seven playm Davis smacked the line twice and Spangler once but the ball was still inches short of the goal On fourth down Spangler dove over center for the touchdown Davis who is going to college In his home town of Washington never broke loose for any sensational gallops but was the workhorse of the Colonial back-field He hit the line and skirted the ends for repeated gains a number of them good for 10 yards and more Playing in the tailback spot hedid all the Colonial passing Six out of 18 of his heaves were good for 107 yards Quarterback Bud Fisher handled most of the passing chores for the last two and half minutes of the season's opener for both teams before 6000 fans here this afternoon and trimmed the Generals 10-7 It was only fifth victory in the past three years but a sweet one for (Red) Smith a former coach at Hantpden-Sydnev and all-time Furman great making his debut as gridiron boss at the South Carolina school Leading 7-3 late in the final quarter Brian Bell usually a very dependable fellow fum bled -and Harry Biermann Fur man's alert 180-pound junior end from Bellmore pounced on the loose leather the Generals' 10-yard marker Two plays later Quarterback George Pruitt the Purple's passing whiz from Greenville who caused Coach "Pappy" Lewis' lads quite a great deal of concern with his tosses wept back to pitch once more Finding the defense scattered he decided to run instead and romped across- the goal line standing up Wingback Johnny Little booted the extra point from placement Furman Counts Yield Goal Furman had counted in the first period on a field goal by Whip Richmond By 19-0 Count By Shelley Rolf The Lu Gambinoless University of Maryland football team at City Stadium last night opened its 1948 season with a dazzling display of ground power that meant a 19-0 victory over the University of Richmond in a Southern Conference game played before 10000 onlookers Completely outclassing the Spiders all the way the fast Old Liners collected touchdowns in the first third and fourth quarters without using too many of Coach Jim split tricks and without showing too much of the loss of the -bald-headed Gam-bino who was declared ineligible by the Southern Conference earlier this month In fact one of the fellows taking over for Lu Jim LaRue gave the crowd its biggest thrill with an 80-yard punt return early in the fourth quarter for the final Maryland touchdown The first Maryland score came late in the opening period after the Terps had fumbled away two earlier scoring opportunities and was produced on a 65-yard drive Vern Seibert finally went eight yards for the score after taking a handoff from Vic Turyn Taking A 6-0 lead into the intermission Continued on Page 5 Column 6 failed to stop a last-minute scoring drive however Both scores of the defending Southern Conference champs came on passes from Quarterback Tommy Kprczowski Davidson Helpless The Davidson offensive was held helpless until midway in the last period when the Wildcats drove from their own 15 to score on the last play of the game The mighty Tribe warmed up early in the game when Davidson Halfback Jake Wade Jr fumbled on a punt return on his own 40 and Fullback Jack possession James Leavitt intercepted one of aerials on the Miemi 38 and ran the ball hack 10 yards Joe McCary and Johnny Papit carried up to the 16 from where McCary faking an end sweep rifled a pass to Floyd Tayloe open in the end zone However the Miamians undefeated in 11 starts were deter' mined to keep their unblemished record The Redskins required only half a dozen plays to march 66 yards for the game-tying touchdown a 24-vard pass from Olix to Captain Paul Shoults That was the ball game from the point of view but it was not the end of thrills for the majority of the fans who remained to the last play Statistically Miami Best Scrutiny of the statistics shows that Miami had the better of the going in all but one department runback of pass interceptions Here the Cavaliers with one gained 41 yards Miami although throwing up a sturdy defense against the Virginia aerials did not make a single interception The Redskins led in net yards rushing by 202 yards to 138 Black burn's basic T-formation plays with his own improvisations also outgained the Cavaliers by 122 yards to 67 on passes Miami madq good of 10 of 19 efforts Virginia on six of a dozen The punting was as close as the
