that lasted throe and a half hours and finally ended with the Dodgers winning 13-12 Each team scored four times in the ninth the Dodgers grabbing the tying and winning runs in the last half of the ninth when Pete Reisrr cracked a pinch single with the bases loaded and none out The Dodgers came from behind twice to make it two in a row over the Giants They trailed 8-3 at one point hut came un facing the Builders in the other The Colts lost only half-a-game to Newjnrt News yesterday as the Builders split with Portsmouth A two-game margin separates the two clubs Phillies-Braves Box Scores BOSTON July 4 With a modern major league record-matching outburst of 14 runs in a single inning the Boston Red Sox broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh to gain a hollow 19-5 win over the Philadelphia Athletics today before a stunned 24363 crowd Twelve of those markers were against 23-year-old Relief Pitcher Charlie Harris who retired only one of the 13 batters who faced him during that horrible baseball nightmare Starter Carl Scheib had a 3-2 lead when the Red Sox came to bat in the sixth and when the latter pulled into 5-3 lead with two out the hapless Harris took over and retired Johnny Pesky Thereupon Eddie Joost homered with Harris aboard to pull the Athletics into a tie in their side of the seventh to set the stage for the Bosox's matching of the singleinning modern scoring record set bv the New York Yankees In July 1920 and first equalled hy the Chicago Cubs August 5 1922 The all-time record for runs per inning is 18 made by the Chicago Cubs back in 1883 1 11 Men Face Harris And while the Red Sox were so doing 11 of them faced Harris before he could get one of them out Stan Spence on a fly to center Then Junior Stephens singled and Bobby Doerr walked before Manager Connie Mack relented and pulled in Bill McCahan from the bullpen Harris was responsible for 12 runs on six hits five bases on balls and one batter reaching on a choice with everybody safe in a third of an inning McCahan came in with two runners aboard and after they scored the Sockers scored twice against him on three hits before Ted Williams who had been up twice before in that inning and walked finally ended the ludicrous burlesque bv grounding into the shifted infield The all-over totals for side of that Inning which enabled the Red Sox to set a new 1948 scoring high were 14 runs nine hits six bases on balls another reaching on a fielders choice with all hands safe two left and no errors Williams started it by drawing a pass He was forced in with the deciding run after Stan Spence singled and Junior Stephens and Bobby Doerr also drew bases on balls Majmkt Homers The first three Philadelphia tallies were the result of Hank four-bagger with two on base in the sixth Doerr provided the first Boston run with his tenth homer in the second It was obvious that Harris teammates were distressed by his humiliation That youngster however declined to comment but the venerable Connie Mack explained it occurred because his dub came here for a three-game series with onlv eight pitchers and must play a doubleheader with the Washington Senators tomorrow Five of available hurlers were used here FIRST GAMC PHILADELPHIA (N BOSTON (N) CINCINNATI July Harry (The Cat) Brecheen broke a Cardinal losing streak today by setting the Cincinnati Reds down 8-1 in the nightcap of an Independence Day doubleheader The Reds with Johnny Wyro-stek and Hank Sauer providing the fireworks won the first game 8-6 Sauer spoiled Brecheen's bid for a shutout in the second with his twenty-fourth home run Wyrostek homered twice and Sauer once in the first game as Ewell Blackwell chalked up his fifth victory FIRST GAME LOUIS ST (N) CINCINNATI (N) abrhoa abrbo a Ktanbr 2h 2 0 13 2 Ariibura tf 3 2 2 5 0
