Richmond Times-Dispatch, April 24, 1963 (State Chamber of Spacious Living Room in Belle Ville, Located in Gloucester Estate on North River Is Gloucester Landmark Times-Dispatch News Bureau GLOUCESTER Belle Ville, which overlooks North river in Gloucester county and was an established landmark of this Tidewater area a century before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, will be among the homes in this area open to visitors Friday and Saturday during Historic Garden Week. THE ORIGINAL brick mansion at Belle Ville was an H- shaped building. It was constructed in 1658 in Dutch Colonial architectural style on land which was part of an estate containing thousands of acres, acquired in a grant from the Crown by John Booth. Approximately 150 acres remain today in the Belle Ville estate. Only a wing of the original brick mansion is standing.

The remainder was destroyed by fire only a few years after its completion. The present frame portion of the house was erected in 1700. In 1705 Belle Ville became the property of Thomas Booth, descendant of the original owner, and later it was passed by inheritance to Frances Amanda Todd Booth her husband, Warner Tallioferro. During the lifetime of Warner Tallioferro, Belle Ville probably reached its peak. The estate was practically self sufficient with large barns, a harness shop, saw-pit, shoe shop, weaving house, blacksmith shop and carpenter shop.

Attendance Law ABINGDON Delegates to the Virginia division of the American Association of University Women have voted to support legislation for the reenactment of a state compulsory school attendance law. At present the state has a statute allowing individual localities to adopt a compulsory attendance law, but provides for an option allowing parents not to send their children if they "conscientiously object." The AAUW delegates, at their convention here, also adopted a resolution requesting legislation to reopen closed schools and to insure that the state's public schools be kept open. MAIN Princess To Wed Financier LONDON, April 23-(P) Royal guests will have a close. range view, and millions of commoners will look in by television on the wedding of PrinCONR Alexandra and a handsome financier, Angus Ogilvy, in Westminster Abbey Wednesday, The ceremony within the 900. year -old abbey will rival anything seen there since Princess Margaret stepped down the same blue-carpeted aisle May 6, 1960, for her marriage to Antony Armstrong-Jones, the commoner who has since become the Earl of Snowdon. Princess Alexandra is a 26- year-old cousin of Margaret and Queen Elizabeth II.

She is 12th in line of succession to the British throne. Ogilvy is 34. He is the aristocratic, though untitled, second son of the 12th Earl of Airlie. Always popular with the ple, Alexandra endeared herself even more widely by announcing she will promise "to obey" in the marriage service. BELLE VILLE, eventually Commerce Photos by Flournoy) County BPW Clubs Propose Study Group A four-member delegation from the state Business and Professional Women's Clubs yesterday asked Governor Harrison to set up a state Commission on the Status of Women.

The group, composed of state president Mrs. Paul Hounshell of Culpeper, and Mrs. William Garrett of Lynchburg, Mrs. Wade Palmer of Purcellville and Mrs. George Ames of Arlington, seek a commission that will study conditions under which women work, vote, pay taxes and earn wages.

THE STUDY group would be patterned after National Commission on the Status of Women, set up by President Kennedy in 1961. If established, Virginia's commission would be the second set up by state. Michigan established a study group even before the President's. The club representatives asked that the study group consider seven areas- educational opportunities and the need for expansion; policies and practices in employment; political and civil rights; present legislation: tax laws protective, affect women's earnings; discrimination in government and private employment on the basis of sex; and the recommendations regarding wages. MRS.

HOUNSHELL expressed hope that a cross-section of individuals, including state officials, business leaders, educators and religious figures, would make up the commission. A spokesman for the Governor's office said that, in the past, such proposals have been subject to General Assembly action. The Assembly is not scheduled to meet again until early 1964.
