the continent, you experience it to the full when the tram finally draws up at Vancouver. Of course yon can get off at I Westminster Junction and go to the pretty sleepy Conservative little tow cliinhing up the north shores of the Inlet, which calls itself the Koyal City lnvause the Vueen named it, and which is a most interesting, pleasant, (uamt little spot. They show you 1 there a low, dilapidated liuihling in which the atuhitious British Columbians once tried to mint their money without the (Governor consent. I think five, fives live tens ami live twenty dollar hills were issued when His Excellency, by warning the Provincial authorities to proceed at their own peril, effectually interfered. A resident of Westminster, who holds one of these ten dollar lulls, ha, several times lieen odered two linn ilred dollars for it.

1 am positively tired of trying to transeriie si. tuerv, and a loudv sunset shining in the clear waters of the Gulf of Georgia from Udiind the purple ranges that guard it would only provoke a greater effort and a greater failure. WHY IS VICTORIA SAII? Because of Vancouver. And when I tell you of Vancouver the reason ill appear. But she is charming in her sadness; she sits there watching the waves of what she fondly thought was her own Pacific, like a dear old maiden aunt in curl papers.

Very "set in her ways," too, is Victoria, and one of her ways was for a long time, ami is yet to a certain extent, a dislike for all 'Canadians, as she calls them, I don't know what the original "Canadian" that penetrated her fastnesses from the east ever did to Victoria, hether he flirted with her iu a financial way or went back and wrote derogatory newspaper articles about her, but he must lie responsible for this otherwise unaccountable prejudice. For Victoria is not Canadian, except by grace and Confederation oh, no IVe eininently British. There is always a man of war or two at Esquimau which you are to pronounce as it is spelled, with a long i and an accent on it, and not "Eskimo," as you are tempted to do and the officers lend their brass buttons and sunburned complexions to Victoria society the year round. There are games on "the green" which quite remind you of Goldsmith, and box bordered garden paths and Government buildings of the most quaint design, one story, of dull red brick with wooden ornaments, each department housed separately in one square. The clever writer then goes on to deserilie the Legislative Hall, the Chinese quarter and the opium trade, as well as the vast wealth possessed by several of the Chinese merchants.

Referring to the American Chinese Restriction Act, she concludes that it iM be of advantage to the Canadian l'acilic route. Thus doth our neighbors' sin, she observes, turn to good account wiili us. In the meantime it is rather pitiful to see the poops of two large Canadian vessels which left Shanghai while yet the Bill wa pending, crowded ith Chinamen in bond, who cannot leave the ship, and stand in stupid wonder at the laws of Chris t'ans. Nobody, she knows ju why Victoria is so conservative; periiapi it is Chinese influence wafted across the itte. But to fully appreciate her ron ervatiMn you must iie at her big hotel, with irs pi mi old Bionaivk cook and dingy horsehair furniture, where the waller will you if you'll avc a sKe boil the joint, sir drive all about it in the sh'i py October sunshine and then go back to Vancouver and sit down and think.

You haven't di.t covered how many people there are in Victoria; they seem to lie mostly ill the house. Americans would not think it remarkable, but for Canadians a tow two years old, with seven or eight thousand inhabitants, is an infant prod gy. I know I found its accompli. hnieuts quite fascinating. It exhil irates one to be in a place hose rigorous young vitality is so strong as to gut into one's own blood somehow, and give it a new thrill.

That is what one feels in Vancouver. 1 UK AIK IS ATIIROB ITH HRlKI RR.Ss; cry ijay brings some new revelation of eunrpr se a bridge, a road, a new indus tiy, a lifteen tbou and dollar building. All this hile yet whole squares of the city are doited with the stump' and luxmiaiit ith the bright green bracken of the forest that wa i h'TO two years ago. The blue smoke of the pioneer's burning trunks curling up beside a twenty thousand dollar residence or a forty thousand dollar block represents a condition of things very new to Canadians. It is a combination of picturesqueness and the commercial spirit that we shall not very long.

I am not an over confident person, but I shouldn't mind aisuming the prophecy that in eighteen mouths there will not be a stump ill Vancouver. The growth of the place has been organic and normal so far, chiefly owing to the wise policy of the company in the sale of lands, by which the speculative spirit has been to a large extent excluded. It has not mortgaged its future in any way, there has lieen no boom, and the men most deeply interested hope to avoid one. The town seems simply fulfilling its destiny as the one important Canadian Pacific port, and the center of provincial industries. I knew a careful uuspeou lative young fellow from Ontario who brought his business here with him two years ago, when he was rated, with hia whole plant, at five hundred dollars.

The other day Dun, Winian Co. put him down at ten thousand. He told me of his transactions. There was nothing extraordinary atsiut them, only a steady prospering. On the other hand to illustrate the chances of the place, a Frenchman whom I met told me he hail made fifteen hundred dollars on a i investment upon which he had paid just thirty before turning it over.

Of coi'rse there is an American spirit in the place, another thing of which British Victoria disapproves, and the American spirit will prove some day that there is no reason why the Pacific coast should only have one San Francisco. HOTEL VANCOUVER AND THE PARK. One's first surprise in Vancouver is the hotel. When I say "the hotel" I feel that I have been definite enough, for nobody could possibly make a mistake regarding the article. It is built for an American city and managed on American principles, tempered with a regard for Pntish and foreign prejudices.

The hot cakes for instance, are American, the steak a In John Bull, and the handsome headwaiter an Italian tenor, with an operatie grief in effect. A good many Montrealers recognize a friend in Mr. Matthews, to whom, under the Company, we owe all this. Perhaps the common testimony to his skill in management is the liest I can give, and that is that the hotel has no equal in Canada, except perhaps the Windsor of Montreal. And the next is the Park a seven mile drive around a British Columbia forest, where they show you the tree, fifty and sixty feet iu girth, and the pale green moss hangs its banners every, where between you and the far off sky, and the grouse rides and skip, while on the broad wateis lieside yiV holc flcts of wild duck ail within gmiU it ciiifaly tbi luiarissoi 1 real etl.

One meets all kinds of interesting ty'ies in the bij hotel. It is so luxurious a place. and so different from what they had expected, that people stay much longer than they intendeil sometimes even missing a China steamer for the pleasure of resting here after the long westw ard journey.
