PAUL & WAYNE SKELLY SERVICE East Hwy. 30 — Carroll Iowa Bookshelf FUNNY BUSINESS fly Roger 8o//en Edited By Mary Ann Riley FIFTY BIRDS OF TOWN AND CITY, By Bob Hines and Peter A. Anastasi. (U.S. Government Printing Office, $4 cloth, $1.50 paper) If birds attract you (or vice versa) there's a new "must" book fresh on the spring scene and it doesn't read like a biology text. It was edited only in inform, educate, entertain and hopefully coax you into the satisfying hobby of birdwatching. It's 50 watercolor portraits make it worthwhile for young and old. Published by the U.S. Department of Interior's Fish and Wildlife Service Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife "Fifty Birds of Town and City" is actually a redoing of a subject old to the U. S. Government Printing Office. Early in this century the old Bureau of Biological Survey published "Fifty Common Birds of Farm and Orchard" with paintings by Louis A. Fuertes. This first volume, now a classic of bird libraries is out of date because of the great population shifts in the six decades since its introduction. Our nation's principal conservation agency, the Interior Department, thought it time to renew citizen interest in birds, a natural resource and infinite balancer ofnature'sways. The book really does open one's eyes to the Iowa about you because most of the bird subjects are found here. Cottle. (Houghton MifflinCo.,$5.95) This book is predicated on a simple irony. It is a study in political awareness and sensitivity among poor black children in America, conducted by a male white sociologist. In spite of appression, age, lack of rights, their conception of themselves, and of their parents, formed partly by us, these children learn about politics and about the systems of relationships which govern them. The facts interpreted are about one boy, one girl, both twelve, who talk intensely about revolutionary changes in government, for to them politics is their HOPE. The interviewer established a special kind of friendly relationship and the children shared thoughts and love and dreams. Their dreams are real problems, dying, poverty hunger and loss. Forced maturity gives them firm wills I DON'T K.NOVM ABOOT AS i eer so^e SWED OP and resiliency. They live with grief, anger, fury, and loss. Black parents try improve, ; and to thier having little effect of the parents...protect the children from this truth or tell them?
