in the Orange Bowl tonight The Indians getting superb line play held the upper hand through the first half and looked to he on the way to victory when Stan Magdziak kicked a held goal from the Miami 12-yard line But then Hal Johnston a pass-throwing fool from California unlimbered his passing arm and in just three plays after the Tribe's kickoff following its held goal the Hurricane was ahead 6 to 3 Starting on the Miami 28 Bob McDougal 200-pound fullback broke away for 15 yards and then Johnston tossed the first of two pusses leading to the touchdown The first was a 35-yard toss to Tony Yovicsin the big end who was ruled Ineligible at North Carolina That placed the ball on the 22 and Johnston faking a wide run to hu right threw over the goal line to End John Mell for the score Chaul failed to convert the extra point The next time the Hurricane got the ball it was the same story Only Carl Mosso emulated Johnston and swift Bob Bowman did the catching for a 40-yard gain to 19 McDougal then moved to the three in three rushes and on the next play smashed over for Miami's second touchdown Ghaul added the extra point The scoring was confined to a period of less lhan five minutes the third quarter but the story of the game was much more than that With William and Mary's hard-charging line playing brilliantly during the first half the Tribe threatened several times moving deep into Miami territory on the running of Tom Korczowski Bob Longacre and Jack Cloud but the Indians never got to pay dirt But when they moved 39 yards within lft-yard line in the third quarter with Longacre's 20- yard scamper the best run and Magdziak kicked his field goal few persons among the largest opening game crowd In Miami history would have given much for the chances But the heat had taken its toll from the -and it was hot here tonight and once the Hurricane found the answer to defense-poor coverage on the Miamians moved ahead A running account of the game follows: First the Hurricane needed but a yard for a first down Korczowski then went to work racing around his right eifd for 14 yards to move the ball to the 33 The little speedster then wheeled around his left end picked up good interference down field and romped 45 yards to 21-yard line There the attack bogged down and Kirczow- passes failed to connect has second toss being intercepted by Johnston on the Miami six-yard line After Ghaul had kicked out to the Miami 43 Buddy Lex on a pass play fumbled and Frantz recovered for Miami at midfield Johnston hit Dermingy for a nine-yard gain on a pass but the Hurricanes still needed one yard on fourth down Whereupon Ghaul kicked out of bounds on the six Jackie Freeman went in and punted out of bounds on the 42 After an exchange of punts Ghaul fumbled going into the line and Steckroth recovered for the Indians on the Miami 48-yard line Bruce swept over his left tackle for 12 yards and a first down on the 36 Mi-kula going to his right picked up five yards as the first quarter ended with the score 0 to 0 Second Period Shuler intercepted pass as the second period started but Clark returned the compliment a moment later by intercepting pass at midfield
