Because we have learned how it is done in our study of agriculture By the time the boys finish the course we shall have some up to date farmers in Stanly county We have a farm shop also at our and have instruction in how to make things in the farm shop line In fact to sum it al! up we are learning to lie our ow boss and we ahnii shall not We can say to the older folks and parents tluf great things have been done in Stanly in the are up Wei I Mr Eli Herrin a Civil War veteran is now jftl years old and has lived in Stanly county all his life He was born in a log house and of par ents who did not have much of this goods i However they wot ked hard and in return for their labor they had plenty whereby to live andsome to spare His educational training was very little as he have the educational advantages which the youth of today enjoys The school which he at tended was a little one room log school house with a big fireplace at one end in which you could almost burn rails The school room was poorly equipped It consisted of a stool and table for the teacher slab tenches for the pupils to sit on without any backs to them and slabs nailed up along the side of the wails for writing desk These were used for the benefit of the pupils who were adv arced far enough io write The old school master also had a bundle of hickory switches used as medicine for naughty boys and girls usu ally it was the boys who got the taste of the medi cine The school term lasted only about six weeks and the remainder of the time the children were hard at work on the farms He was put between the plow handle when only a mall boy 1 where he lav manv i weeks suffering intense pain When he was able he made his way as best he could home There being no railroads or any way much for convey ance tne journey was long and tiresome went many days with scarcely enough food to keep alive and many a night his bed was the frosty ground After a long wearisome journey he reached heme It was a happy meeting of the husband and wile and the father and children He was a great fox and deer hunter and be fore and after the war he went on numerous trips and never failed in bringing home game After the war sometime his second wife died He was left again to fill a place Thev made the way for some time then Mr Herrin married the third time his third wife lieing a cousin to his first two wives Most of his chil dren were married before the last marriage Mr Herrin although a little nervous is still enjoying good health He is the father of seven children He was able by hard work to start his children off with a home He has plenty now and would not be in want should he live many many years I He has 32 grandchildren living 35 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild A TRIBUTE TO A CONEDERATE VETERAN I take this occasion to pay in my feeble way a tribute to a veteran of the last cause who is en joying the best of health The memorable strug gle of this soldier in gray named in honor of John Stanly It is situated in the southern part of North Carolina and is bounded on the south by Union and Anson on the north by Rowan on the east by Montgomery and on tiie west by Cabarrus Its area is 116 square miles and has a popula tion of 27 192 people There are three railway lines through this county The Southern connecting with the main line at Salisbury and the Southboudr Trunk Line running entirely through the county The Norfolk and Southern fiqm Chailotte to Raleigh runs through the southern part of the county Owing to the warm summer climate and ex
