history of Moore county occurred here about 1 yesterday (riday) morning when a mob composed of 50 or 100 lawless citizens came into town and went directly to thecountyjail where one Silas Martindale who was charg ed with rape was coflned procured the keys from tbe jailer and took Martindale up Main street to the edge of town and hung him to a black jack tree by the side of the road Hie neck was not broken He was simply choked to death and from in dications about the scene it is sup posed that the lynchers raised and lowered him many times in order to extort a confession from him and that he met a slow and horrible death and orderly not many of the citizens knowing that anything out of the nrdinarv had haonened until morn ing Many oi rne citizens viewea uie lifeless body as it hung by the road side exposed to tbe chilling wind early yesterday morning About 9 tne county coroner nnuajury cut me body down and instituted an investi at ion which is not yet complete ut which however resulted in finding sufficient evidence to warrant the arrest of A Jones Dr Street and Debt Andrews of Moore county and Bill Harding of Chatham county They are prominent citizens and some sensational developments are looked for They are aw in the cus tody of the sheriff and a great num ber of people are in Carthage and ex citement is high The solicitor Colin Mcuean fceq oi Kiizaoein City arrived this morning and is now on the scene He and the coroner Dr (I McLeod with the assistance of Messrs Seawell and Burns attorneys for Martindale are making an effort to obtain evidence against the lynch I era Several weeks ago one Mre Brewer a respectable white lady and echoo' teacher living near Prosperity in th nntnr nortion of Moore county whili on ner way to scnooi one morning was met in the road by a man who threatened her life if she refused to submit to him Later in the day Mre Brewer informed her busband ot what had transpired Suspicion rest ed on Silas Martindale He was ar rested and carried before Mrs Brewer who it is said identified him He was given a hearing before a justice of the peace and sent to Carthage jail Lynching was feared and Jones slipped his prisoner to the Raleigh jail for safe keeping bnt brought him back about a week ago and lodged in him Carthage jail where he met the fate above mentioned it is believed by many that Martin dale was not guilty At least there
