Richmond Timea-Dhpatch Tueu March 11 1958 3 Science Advisory Group Named Dr Davis Paschall State Superintendent of Public Instruction yesterday announced the appointment of 16 persons to an advisory committee cm mathematics and science The group composed of scientists engineers and educators will assist and advise the State Department of Education in several phases of these fields Among other things the com- superintendent of Petersburg public schools DeL Paul Manns of Bowling Green Christian Grosser of Richmond chief engineer of Philip Morris Inc and Mrs Vera Rems-burg of South Boston science teacher at Halifax High School Others are: Edmond Boggs of Richmond commissioner of the State Department of Labor and Industry Raymond Long of Richmond director of the State Department of Conservation and Development and Richard Chumney of Richmond assistant commissioner of the State Department of Agriculture and Immigration Dr Armistead of Richmond director of the Virginia Institute for Scientific Research state Sen Lloyd Bird of Chesterfield Dr Eugene Crittenden of Hopewell director of research and development of the nitrogen division Allied Chemical Corporation Dr Thomas Hahn Jr of Blacksburg professor of physics at VPI and Dr Edward Harlow of Richmond representative of the research laboratory of the American Tobacco Company Other Appointees Others are: Dr George Jeffers of Farmville professor of- biology at Longwood College Dr A Kise of West Norfolk research director of the Virginia Smelting Co Dr Louis A Pardue of Blacksburg vice president of VP I and Dr James Cole Jr of Charlottesville director of the -Academic Year Institute of the University of Virginia Others are: John Meade mittee will help the State Department of Education in expanding and Increasing the effectiveness of the science and mathematics programs in the schools The group also will study the posibility of developing a program with Industry and scientific organizations under which scientists or other personnel could be released from their regular jobs for one or two hours a day to teach science and mathematics courses In local schools This could be done when a division superintendent of schools could not employ qualified teachers Other areas in which the committee will work include the following: (1) Advise and assist In the recruitment of young -people to enter teaching as a vocation (2) Assist in reviewing for accuracy all science cur- xiculum materials produced by the State Department of Education for meeting the needs of gifted students (3) Advise teachers on safety measures for science laboratories (4) Advise the State Department of Education on how science and mathematics courses in the schools can be made more effective The following were appointed to the committee: Specialized Formula Works 6 Ways To EASE CPU'S MISERY Mistol CAPSIUES Court to Review Stadium Matter The Virginia Supreme Court agreed yesterday to review a lower court decision against Greater Richmond Civic Recreation Inc (GRCR) which had sought damages from a light-pole contractor GRCR asked $4646010 damages from A Ewing's Sons Inc It alleged that the con-1 tractor breached a contract by falling to repair the floodlight poles blown down at Parker Field during a hurricane Oct 15 1954 denied liability GRCR claimed the lighting installation contract with Ewing's specified that the poles should withstand winds of 100 mph but that the poles came down during wind df less velocity The lower court Richmond Law and Equity ruled In favor of last November 2 catalog departments to serve- at Broad St store and at Southside Plaza!
