4 I A Richmond Timca-Dispatch Thursday Feb 6 1938 Dr Everett Gill 88 Former Missionary Dies Veteran Songwriter Dies in New York 4 NEW YORK Feb Songwriter Lew Brown 64 who turned out many hit tunes on his own and in collaboration with others died here Wednesday He wrote many Broadway musicals with Ray Henderson and the late Buddy DeSylva He was a member of the firm of DeSylva Brown and Henderson Shows they wrote and produced included "Hold Everything" "Three "George White's "Calling All "Flying "Strike Me "Forward and "Follow State Mother Succumbs SOUTH BOSTON Feb Mrs Rosa Harton Bennett 82 of South Boston died Wednes-1 day at her home She was the widow of William Bennett former South Boston chief of police A son I Gordon Bennett of Richmond is state auditor of public accounts Also surviving are three daughters Mrs John Yea-man of Alexandria and Mrs Gil-ert Crews and Miss Louise Bennett of South Boston two other sons Jack Bennett of Richmond and Wiliiam Bennett of South Boston one brother Harton of Durham 12 grand-childrep and three great-grand-1 children A funeral service will be held I at 2 pm Thursday at Powell Funeral Home with burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery OTHER DEATHS Dr Everett Gin Sr Forest Southern Baptist missionary to Europe died Wednesday at a Raleigh hospital His son was the late Dr Everett Gill Jr who was secretary for Latin America for the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board in Richmond He died here in 1954 Dr Gill was born in Randolph county Mo He received the doctor of theology degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville Ky 88 of a former During World War I Dr Gill was hospital inspector for the American Red Cross He was awarded the Royal Abruzzi Medal by Victor Emmanuel II for relief work during an earthquake in Italy He retired from overseas mission work in 1939 He was a member of the Sons of the Revolution Knights Templar Veterans of Foreign Wars and Phi Gamma Delta fraternity Surviving are his wife Mrs Emma Geraldine Williams Gill a son COl Harrison Williams Gill of Tennessee a daughter Mrs John Byron Sims of Idaho He served as pastor of! a sister Mrs Emma Agee of churches in Kentucky Tennes- Oklahoma" and several grand- see Missouri and North Carolina before being appointed missionary to Italy in 1904 Later he served 18 years as Southern Baptist representative to Europe children A funeral a member of the Virginia Home Economics Association Rural Women of the World League of Women Voters American Home- Economics Association and the American Association of the United Nations She was the first woman to receive the -certificate of merit from Virginia Polytechnic Institute The home economics building at VPI bears her name Miss Agnew received a doctor of laws degree from the College of William and Mary and the service citatiqn of merit from Virginia for excellence in performance of duties She is survived by tr number of nieces and nephews A funeral service will be held at 2 pm Thursday at the Burkeville Presbyterian -Church with burial in Sunset Cemetery in Burkeville Miss Ella Agnew the first home demonstration agent In the United States died Wednes day at the Home of Confederate Women A native of Prince Edward county she at one time headed home demonstration work in Virginia and directed the establishment of Home Demonstration Clubs in the state Miss Agnew worked for five just before the turn of the century in South Africa first as secretary-treasurer of the Huguenot Seminary at Paarl and later as principal of the Ama-juba Seminary in the Transvaal After her return to the United States she did YWCA work in North Carolina Kentucky Ohio Oklahoma and New York Later she was the first woman employed by the United States Department of Agriculture for field
