Liplil-TiniP Spectacle Often railed the most dazzlincly light od fow blocks in Ihp world, famed Fremonl Street in downtown I.as Vegas is a spectacle of brilliant neon and millions of light bulbs. They embellish the busy clubs and high-rise hotels concentrated in the "Casino Center." Las Vegas hosted 235 trade shows, conclaves, conventions and major association meetings during 1967, attended by more than 155,000 delegates. The city's ability to handle this enormous number has resulted from the fantastic development of convention and banquet facilities in the resort hotels along the famed "Strip" and in the nearby Convention Center. Any one of a dozen hotels can and does handle single conventions or several at a time totaling up to 2,5110 delegates. When it pools its resources, Las Vegas can handle groups of up to 30,000 persons, with room left over for another 20,000 tourists at the same time.

The growing popularity of Las Vegas as a convention city has been aided by the same magnetic factors that draw 14 million visitors each year: gaming, sunshine, more than 25,000 first class hotel and motel rooms and almost unlimited entertainment and recreation. A big plus for conventioneers is the fact that almost all hotels are within a three-mile radius of the main convention complex. There's no housing in the suburbs! All modes of transportation are a to provide quick access to the city. Eight major airlines serve modern McCarran Airport, a short distance from the Strip and Casino Center downtown. A network of super highways brings motorists directly into the mainstream of activity, and train and bus depots are centrally located.

They're even talking now about putting in a monorail, which will bring all these things within minutes of one another. The success story as a mec-ca for international, national and regional meetings began in 1359. In that year, work was completed on the Convention Center, located on a 67-acre site near the heart of Strip. The doors to the complex were first opened in April of that year to welcome 5,000 delegates to the World Con TOUT PARIS' 8th AND 2900 Lai Vegas Blvd. So.

It has bpen determined, in fact, that these spiraling, racing, blinking rolnramas contain some light bulbs, 237,000 feet or 42 miles of neon tubing and cost in excess of $6,000,000 to manufacture. Power consumption for a single month exceeds 8.827.000 watts, an electric bill of And the whole spectacle has been highlighted, very literally, in the past two years by additions of newly rising hotel skyscrapers. Within this two-block thoroughfare, the Mint Hotel has gone up 26 stories, the Fremont Hotel has spread over a full block and is going up ,31 stories, the Four Queens Hotel is on its way upward to 19 stories and the Golden Nugget is pondering further high rise construction. As these expansions come off on schedule, this compact downtown area offers all of 2.500 first class rooms, with multi-decked parking garages and ground lots accommodating 5,000 cars.

The towering structures have caused many to refer to downtown Las Vegas a Wall Street, with neon. One might add that the sptacle of these new palaces of glitter is surpassed only by the lavishness of the services they offer. In addition to the 24-hour excitement of the casinos, the hotels are featuring such fun facilities as skyroom lounges with full orchestras for dancing, a rooftop olympic-sized swimming pool and huge showrooms whose entertainment are beginning to rival their sister extravaganzas out on the Las Vegas Strip. Each of the twelve hotels or clubs has also gone all out on food services. Most feature fine restaurants, some of the gourmet category.

Others have colorful coffee shops or snack bars. The object, of course, is to provide a 1 1 meal, a light repast, or a quick snack, anytime or in any manner toward which a guest feels inclined This is not to say that there Is not more to downtown Las Vegas than just the clubs and hotels. On the contrary, the main streets abound in fine shopping and commercial facilities. The street is dotted with department stores within blocks of the fun area. Several modern high rise banks and office buildings can also be found.

However, the favorite tour of visitors to Las Vegas starts at the corner of Casino Center Boulevard and Fremont Street, proceeds down one side of the street then across the back up the other side. Thus, all twelve spots are covered. Here, briefly, is what one sees: The Four Queens, newest high rise and the only Las Vegas casino with a two-story high ceiling and massive decorator chandeliers. The "Million Dollar Golden Nugget," whose old West decor, including deep red damask walls and rare woodcarvings, is a collector's delight. The Lucky Casino, one of cal ppople as well as tourists, featuring a fine dining room, entertainment, rooms and the usual attractions of a fine hotel.

And whilp high-rise hotels havp added skyscraper glamour and additional accommodations for downtown visitors, a wealth of motels conveniently located around I perimeter of Casino Centpr insure ample housvng for tourists year 'round. Always expanding, improving, building, Casino Center is not only concerned with its own growth, but is vitally interested in and participates in the civic, cultural anc charitable programs. Diamond Jim's Nevada Club, where the constant din of slot machines (they even have penny slots!) make a rhythmic sound unique to Las Vegas. The California Club, reflecting the glory of the Golden State, features a novel seahorse bar.

The Pioneer Club, beautifully modern, with some unusual slot machines and an artistic decor which often has been photographed for decorator magazines. The Club Bingo, the smallest member along the "Great White Way" concentrates on bingo. The Golden Gate Club has a decor reminiscent of old San Francisco, with photo blowups and other evidences of a famous city. Here we cross the street to start the return trip at. the Las Vegas Club.

The Carousel is next, with one of the most beautiful bars in the area. Then, the Mint, with its high-rise hotel and every conceivable resort-hotel facility, one of the tallest structures in Hip West. Binion's Horseshoe Club comes next, also featuring an air-curtain entrance, and nn of the most spectacular facades on Fremont Street. Fun-ally, the Fremont Hotel and Casino, the first high-rise hotel in Casino Center, which now plans an increase to 31 stories and now boasts a 450 seat theater showroom.
