THE SUN.HLIGRAM A-17 Of God and Man Commentary March 27, 1971 'Spiritual Revolution Now' Is Slogan of 'Jesus People' By LOUIS CASSELS trying to foment a revolution. Last month, more than 7,000 of them gathered in Sacramento, and marched on the state capitol, singing "Amazing Grace" and waving placards which proclaimed that "Jesus is where it's at." Richard Weaver, 25, who organized the Sacramento rally, told the crowd, "What we're seeing today is happening all over America. "This is a counter-movemcnt to the drug thing, UPI Religion Writer They are young. They are hip. They like long hair and rnck music.

Some of them wear brards, bluejeans, headbands and dark glasses. They are Are they Communists? Anarchists? Far from it. To use their own term, they are "Jesus people." Their goal and slogan is ''spiritual revolution now." the hate thing and all the other things tearing America apart," he said. "Some of us are hippies and some are straights, but we're all Jesus people." No one knows how many of America's young people are actively or peripherally involved in what Weaver calls Religion in the iSciis Odd Answers About God From Children tunity for churches tf as Hogue puts it they are flexible enough to adapt to the kids, to accept the kids as they are, and present Christ to them. But it should be borne firmly in mind that it's Jesus himself not the conventions and rituals of institutionalized religion that has such a powerful appeal to today's youth.

Any attempt by churches tn capture and tame the Jesus movement would be a dreadful mistake. But, it. might be a wonderful thing if the Jesus people would invad-3 churches and set them afire with their joyous enthusiasm. Since "spireno" began last October, nearly 5.000 young people, mostly in their middle or late toons, have professed their faith in Jesus and have committed their lives to his service. The Kev.

John Kisagno, pastor of First Baptist Church, is convinced that the "Jesus movement" is not a passing fad among young people. "I've received many phone calls from parents including some who say they're atheists who are pleased and amazed at changes that have occurred in the lives of their children," he said. "I am certain that this movement is under the influence of the Holy Spirit." The Jesus movement oilers a great evangelistic oppor "the Jesus underground." This movement is gloriously unstructured and unorganized. But the available evidence corroborates Weaver's statement that it's "happening all over America." It is happening, for example, in Houston, Texas, where a farsighted Baptist pastor has demonstrated that churches can abet the youth movement instead of looking askance at it. lor the past five months, the First Baptist Church of Houston has been conducting what it calls "spireno" meetings.

Spireno is an acronym for "spiritual revolution now." The meetings are conducted by Richard Hogue, a long haired, sharply-dressed with-it young preacher who looks and talks like what he very recently was a student. Although he uses the idiom of today's youth, Hogue's pitch is straight forward, undiluted Biblical Christianity with a strong fundamentalist flavor. His talks are interrupted by explosive outbursts of applause, cheers and cries of "right on!" Church of God Sis International Meet ANDERSON, Ind. The 82nd International Convention of the Church of God will be held here June 14-20 under the general theme, "God's Boundless Resources," attracting some 25,000 persons from all parts of the United States and Canada. Key leaders from at least a dozen countries in Europe, Asia, South America and the Caribbean Islands will participate.

CORNELL AP Religion Writer NEW YORK (AP) Ask a child who God is, and you're apt to get some odd answers, such as: "He gives parties." "A ghost." "A millionaire." "A magician." "The smartest person in the world." "Me." These were some of the responses received by a Daytona Beach, couple, Edward and Elizabeth Fox, in interviewing children, 5 to 7 years old, about their religious concepts. "Above all else, the one thing we learned was that to most children, God, though mystifying, is very real and very important," they say. They report the varying, often touching or funny remarks of the youngsters in a new book issued by boubleday called "Christ is God's Middle Name" a line taken from a comment by a little girl. Here are a few excerpts of questions, and the children's answers: Linda: "lie's a king. He looks like a hippie." How Does he look like a hippie? "He has whiskers." What else? "He wears dresses."
