the University of football coaching "staff" For not in many yean have so few coached a major conference football squad as are coaching this Richmond squad Lester Hooker nominal coach of the Junior vanity squad and Chief scout has lately turned his energy and attention to his basketball squad which figures to be a real good roundball team With Hooker turning to basketball Gorky Johns last football eocaptain who has been Iping with the -vanity took over the Jayvees who this year include freshmen That leaves only Head Chech Edwin Joel Merrick and Charlie Ellis working with the varsity qquad And since Ellis la a part-time coach ie hired only for the football season that must leave Merrick the nearest thing to a one-man coaching staff at any major conference school To be sure there is always around "Cbadi" Vance Godbold who in his en--thusiastic backing of the Spiders and Merrick has been exposed to enough football to work the telephone in the press boot By way of showing how the Richmond "staff" works consider last week schedule Richmond played and defeated George Washington University at Griffith Stadium Friday night What with looking after the players getting them fed and safely back on the Westhampton campus' Merrick reached his home after 3 Saturday morning A few short hours later Merrick Ellis and Godbold were on their way to Blacksburg Merrick driving (or "flying as Ellis put it) to scout William and Mary in the 7-7 tie with Virginia Tech Immediately after the game the intrepid threesome began the homeward 210-mile with Pilot Merrick gain at the controls Sunday Merrick and mis began digesting scouting report on Wake Forest the Deacons being Richmond's Homecoming opponents this afternoon at City Stadium The Coach Deserves Backing STRONGMAN COACHING act is not being performed by choice He knows the need of a foil staff of coaches but he Is faced by economical When Merrick became head coach at his alma mater he Inherited a sizable athletic association deficit His superiors in the athletic department nonbelievers of the spend-money-to-make-money theory decreed a program of austerity football budget would not cover athletic office expenses at some schools Yet the guy goes merrily along doing nearly all the recruiting and most of the coaching His teams have improved from year to year and this season for a welcome changes the gate has shown Improvement A good crown at game and a bumper attendance on Thanksgiving Day for the William and Mary game will cut that deficit appreciably and Merrick fervently hopes speed the day when he will no longer have to do several work Not that Merrick is complaining if he did not become a mite discouraged at times he be human but -that big Merrick grin lost for long no matter what comes up Fortunately Merrick's nature is such that he is immune to that common coaching ulcers Last year Richmond and Wake Forest played a 13-13 thriller at City Stadium with the Spiders starting late but coming on in the final quarter with as spirited exhibition as any Richmond team ever gave game could and should be another good one Tom Rogers' Deacons have been sometimes down ag against Virginia Tsdi in the Tobacco Festival game here and against North Carolina and sometimes up as they were against Maryland and last Saturday for three quarters against Clemson You may be sure that Rogers who after four Wake Forest appearances at City Stadium is still seeking his first Richmond victory has done everything possible to get the Deacons "up" for this one You pick a better game to back (at the gate) a deserving coach Quite a Situation Up at Yale UP EAST THEY'RE TALKING about the possibility of Yale's first sellout since 1929 when a couple of great backs "Little Boy Biue" Albie Booth and Army's Chris Ckgle filled the Yale how with more than 70000 spectators Today unbeaten Ivy Leaguers move unpin class to take on Army and they do say that it is likely more than 70000 will be in the famed bowL Just goes to prove that interest in a winning team even in the Ivy League where the game la supposed to mean so much more than victory can be translated into dollars at the box office It might be added that tha Ivy Leaguers ere no less eager than the so-called football foundries when they do come across a box office bonanza We Cai Give You Nina Losers PICKING FOOTBALL WINNERS this unpredictable year borders on the impossible Now If It were the other way around and the object was to pick losers we could name you nine teams sure to lose They are and not In order of futility:
