By Bishops WASHINGTON Feb A uniform set of relaxed Lenten rules has been suggested to Roman Catholic bishops throughout the United States for use in their own diocoes if they see fit This was disclosed today by high church officials The suggestions are designed to triax Lenten regulations on a uniform pattern and eliminate some of the confusion of the past when the rules varied from diocese to diocese A highlight of the new proposals is to allow Catholics throughout the country to eat meat once on Wednesdays during Lent except on Ash Wednesday This privilege previously applied in some dioceses but not in others The Lenten season this year runs from February 27 to April 13 The church officials pointed out that it is up to each bishop to determine whether to put them into effect Lenten regulations for this year are due to be announced in most dioceses this week end In 1950 the bishops of America at the annual meeting of the National Catholic Welfare Conference here appointed a committee of three to draw up a uniform set of rules to eliminate the confusion About a month ago the committee sent out its suggestions to all the bishops for their consideration and possible use Major proposals are: (1) Meat can be eaten once on Wednesdays during Lent except on Ash Wednesdays (2) On days of fast only on full meal is allowed and meat may he taken at this meal except on Fridays Ash Wednesdays and dur ing the forenoon of Holy Saturday Two other meatless meals sufficient to maintain strength may he taken according to each needs but together they should not equal one full meal Previously for instance only a light breakfast was allowed (3) Because of the relaxation Catholics are urged to practice voluntary acts of penance Stiff Fbata Lieutenant-Colonel and Mrs Richard Fitton being done every week in Jacksonville Fla The Rev Dr Walter Towner of Nashville Tenn told a group of Protestant church education leaders about the early-morning church school recently He is chairman of the committee on church school administration of the division of Christian education of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA He said the unusual hours were set up to accommodate people who work nights When regular church or Sunday school hours roil around these people usually are still in bed resting from their night work a similar setup in Portland Oreg for shipyard workers he said have in America 13000000 people who just stay he said move to other cities to take other jobs Many of them have to work nights many cases the work week Is such that families get a three-day week end What happens? The father takes the family away on a away from regular church Dr Towner calls these people "a as far as the church is concerned And the problem is to evangelize a Dr Towner who also is director of the Methodist Church's department of general church work said he believes church schools because of their more flexible programs can reach many persons not reached by churches Fiji Token Given Methodist Board The Board of Missions- and Church Extension of the Methodist Church has been presented whale's tooth by Fiji Islanders as a token of their appreciation of the board's work in their islands The tooth of a whale is said to be the highest badge of honor a man can receive in the islands About 95 per cent of the islanders are Christians of whom most are Methodists Como see tho First 6 Tube Hearing Aid SONOTONE caam 9th Floor Phoao Control National Bash skill and co-ordination of eye and hand "Practice makes is the old axim which I had to copy over and over in school My own handwriting is proof that practice does not always produce perfection Nevertheless without practice we cannot hope more than mediocrity A once-a-month golfer is stymied when he attempts to compete with the twice-a-week player He sees his friend swinging with rhythmic grace and envies him But worse than his own discomfort is the fact that he wastes the time of the better players who have to cool their heels and probably heat their heads while he flounders in the sandtraps The small boy who totes his violin case for his weekly lesson is pitying himself He seems so out of things especially when his friends are playing baseball over there in the lot No Glamor In Practice And the little girl taking her piano lessons when her companions are consuming ice cream and cake around the corner turns against the dull monotonous voice calling "One-two-three-four let's try it She would like to toss the music sheet out of the window and the instructor along with it There is no glamor in practice But without practice we would have no master musicians or great symphonies One of the world's greatest pianists once said if he neglected his practice for one day he could detect the difference in his playing: or for two days his critics noticed it: if for three days the public knew it When we keep practicing there comes a point where we pass from the drudgery of it to the joy of it The beginner in music would like to forego those finger exercises but if she perserveres in trying to get the hang of those lessons the day will come when the music "gets" her Scent Is Thrilling The "cub" reporter after a while develops a nose for news which is as thrilling to him as the scent of the fox is to the hound in the pack Cheap little tunes we can pick up without much practice if we have any ear for music but great symphonies require much living with to be enjoyed Is it not true that our liking for the best things is usually an acquired taste? And acquired mind you by much practice When a minister takes up a collection in church he often repeats the scriptural truth is more blessed to give than to But yonder is a fellow in the third pew who believe that He does so little giving that it hurts-him to part with a dime On the other hand Doctor Wilfred Gren fell who loft a lucrative medical Methodist Bishop to Dedicate Rebuilt Sanctuary CHARLOTTESVILLE Feb 23 Bishop Paul Garber of Richmond will preach at the 11 A service at the First Methodist Church tomorrow and dedicate the restored sanctuary including a number of new objects which have been placed in the sanctuary since the' fire of April 29 1950 causing damage amounting to $75000 Dr Haddaway who was minister at the church when the fire occurred will speak at the night service The new organ to be dedicated Is a three-manual Moller organ The organ destroyed by the fire wag given in memory of Dr Chancellor by his sons in Decern' ber 1925 Dr Chancellor was a member of the faculty of the medical school at the University of Virginia The carillonic bells now in the church replace those given in 1944 by the Misses Mary and Sallie Willie Sterling in memory of the Sterling family The earphones given in 1945 by an anony mous donor have been replaced by an improved type of instrument The cross on the altar was given by a friend in memory of Mac Wade who gave his life in Korea The candlesticks and vases on the altar were given by the Society of Christian Service in memory of James Douglass Hamm Melvin Lupoid Eugene Bellomy Bledsoe Harlow Payne Carroll Jr Harry Brown and Richard Brown who gave their lives in World War Asbury Descendant Given Post in Japan A descendant of Bishop Francis Asbury the horse-riding minister who preached Methodism to early pioneers has been named public relations director of the National Christian Council of Japan He is William Asbury a young newspaperman from Yucaipa Calif who will make his headquarters in Tokyo to edit the Japan Christian Yearbook and publish Japanese literature A Religious Paper Ends 125th Year Of Publication The Christian Observer a Louisville Ky weekly religious newspaper that was printed in Richmond during the Civil War last week ended its 125th year of publication under the ownership and editorship of the same family It was on Feb 17 1827 that the Rev Amasa Converse a Presbyterian minister left his evangelical work in Virginia to become editor of the Richmond Visitor and Telegraph later known as the Southern Religious Telegraph In 1938 he took over the Philadelphia Observer and moved to Philadelphia as editor of the merged publication the Christian Observer Though New Hampshire born Dr Converse was a Southern sympathizer and when the War Between the States broke out he and the Observer moved to Richmond Publication was suspended just before the fall of the city on March 23 but was resumed on June 1 of that year In 1869 the main office was moved to Louisville but the paper continued to be dated and until 1875 Dr Amasa Converse died in 1872 and his Richmond-horn son the Rev Bartlett Converse became editor His son Harry Converse started working for the Observer in 1899 and haa been managing editor since 1907 Any Sin Called Worse For High Caliber Man sin is worse for a man with qualities of leadership than for a man on Skid Dr Kenneth Foreman of Louisville Presbyterian Seminary writes in the current issue of The Presbyterian Outlook Dr Foreman a former Davidson College professor writes a religious column that appears each week in some 1700 newspapers throughout the country His article In the Outlook which discusses the degrees of good and evil notes that the degree of a sin depends upon the person who commits it "It is wrong to tell a he writes it is worse for a Christian than for a heathen for the Christian knows better and aims The seriousness of sin depends upon the "parties and the circumstances of the sinful act he says Sin is not of just one degree for offense in itself may be worse than Jewish Service to Be Music Contemporary Jewish liturgical music will compose the entire regular worship service at Temple Beth Ahabah at 11 A today The work of such composers as Darius Milhaud Julius Chajes Lazare Saminsky and Max Helf-man will be presented The music of some of these composers will be heard for the first time here at the service to which the public is invited at to 9 nit Professor Asks Payment Of Pastors' Car Costs Should a church pay its car expenses when the automobile' Is used for congregetional work?
