Brought to Might Poets of North Carolina" wasthe subject for entertuinment at the meeting of the Lyceum Wednesday night Col I Cameron president of the society and who is perhaps better qualified to treat a subject of this kind than any other man in the state was the principal speaker He read a very thorough and carefully prepared essay in which he treated the subject with great ability He began by referring to the scarcity of good poets in the state He explained this by noting the want of literary centers in the state and the tendency ot poets to go to large cities which he said were the only pluces they could obtain fame Col Cameron gave thenamesof a number of the most distinguished and liest known poets which the state has produced The first of these was Thomas Godfrey who was the author of "The Prince of Parthia" a tragedy which was published and performed in Wilmington in 1759 Reference was made by the sjieaker to I)r Cbas Deems and Judge George Strong who wrote and published some poems in Raleigh but 1 1 suppressed them Edwin A Fuller was a native and resident of Louisburg Franklin county and is principally known through his in the Clouds" One of the most beautiful quotations from this work is as follows: And from little comer came The guardian angels bearing in their arms Their charges during life as laden bees They Hew to heaven's hive and some passed by 8o closely I their burdens could discern And though from lar off unseen earth The stiffened forms are Imme all tenderly Home bore thc dimpled babe with soft closed eyes As if upon its mother's breast its mh-iiis were remarkable ami his "Address to the Ocean" even approaches in majesty Of the writers of fugitive or occasional pieces the following were mentioned: Judge Gaston the author of the "Old North State" wrote the pot-m under )ie-culiar circumstances In Raleigh in Tune 1840 when the state capital and i the Raleigh and Gaston railroad were I completed it wus made thc occasion ot great celebration A lady who lit -t lie 1 time heard some harpists playing the air at once became enthused with the idea of having state patriotic song written to it and asked Judge Gaston to do it for her He complied and hurriedly dashed off the lines which have liecome so familiar Mrs Mary Bayard Clarke of New Berne was the author of Racing a poem on the French Broad Needham Bryan Cobb was the writer of reply to Elegy Jos Holden of Wake county was the writer of some very fine lines on "Hntteras" Thus Lowe of Halifux wus a wonderfully-eloquent Methodist preacher and thc writer of many verses Wm Harrell and lr Francis Hawks were writers of patriotic verses Thus Harrington- was the author of "Carolina Our and Other patriotic pieces Christian Reid now Mrs Tiernan is a novelist and poet as was also Fannie Downing Holden was an able editor jxilit icimi and poet and Misses Anna and Kshcccn Cameron were writers of many patriotic religious and descriptive poems Col Cameron said that there were
