mistake the Carolina subs did when Jones faded back to pass The Tar Heels came in fast and Jones circled them Indian flankmen never let Jones run wide The linemen came through to do the rushing with the ends staying wide until they Acre reasonably certain Jones couldn't sneak around them without running into more green-jersied Indians The result net yardage gain(?) was a loss of minus Taking a tip from the Tar Heel regulars Vdyles kept the Indians smashing away at line So successful were the Indians with their power tactics they kept the ball practically the entire game The Spiders outside of punts and passes ran but 27 1 plays from scrimmage When it is remembered that Richmond attempted but 10 passes one gets 'the general idea that the Spiders couldn't do any scoring if for no other reason-than that they had possession of the ball precious little time the story in brief of the Thanksgiving victory-1 Not a trace of magic there Look of all Three WOODBERRY -In a spirited game marked by the hard tackling of both teams Woodberry Forest defeated Episcopal High School here yesterday 13-0 It was the first victory for the Orange team since 1934 Lightning thrusts in the second and third periods produced the pair of touchdowns The first march got underway slowly when two first downs moved the ball to the home 40 and three successive runs by Sam Fray John Cole and Mel Filler covered the remaining 60 yards Fuller's touchdown dash came on a spinner between the guards which carried 23 yards dropkicked the extra point Pa 9 Play Clicks The second score was set up by a spectacular punt return by Fray which put the ball on the Episcopal 18-yard line On the next play Fray tossed a perfect pass to Charlie Robinson in the end zone pass to Fray for the extra point was incomplete most serious threat came in the final quarter when passing and excellent receiving moved the Alexandrians to the 35-yard line at which point the ball was lost on downs The first quarter was all with Neffs running and West's passing netting two first downs and a recovered fumble giving the losers the ball on the Woodberry 38 The Orange defence tightened at this point however and West was forced to punt Woodberry barely missed a second touchdown in the first half when pass was batted out of Foray's hands on the goal line Hie winners netted 151 yards by rushing to Episcopal's 54 and 19 yards via the air to Episcopal's 53 The first downs stood 6-4 in favor Lineups and summary: Fm Kplurapal Woadbrrrjr 1 Widmaa Bnbiaaaa 1 Herbert Roberta Harrises Craekett Friasell Strieklaad lUoaat Tavener Varner Tilson at Roanoke Game Things so Good for Tech at This Time ir for Puss as he sat down there on the bench? chain-smoking cigarettes His football players felt the drama of the moment too They played their hearts out for their coach in the approved movie and fictional style but it was no go Papa Pooley Hubert and his big Keydets apparently didn't grasp the full significance of the emotional pitch in the camp of the enemy for they were out there to win as if nothing had happened And win they did spoiling what could have been a real tear-jerking story Big Puss took his last licking in good grace He was quiet and reserved after the ball game and said only "The best team Thus retired from the Old Dominion coaching ranks a fellow who has had his ups and downs since he became head coach at Tech in 1932 That was his best year incidentally when the Gobblers knocked off every opponent save Alabama which beat them 9-7 Many I men believed the team was the greatest Tech ever had with the possible exception of those in the halycon days of the mighty Hunter Carpenter Resignation Talked Two Years Ago TWO YEARS ago the story got out that Puss Redd was ready to resign as coach and take over the full-time duties as alumni secretary and there was something more than rumor to his report although it didn't materialize Possibly because Redd's '38 team tied 2-2 in the snow at Roanoke for a victory Since that time the story quieted down in spite of increasing pressure from dissatisfied alumni groups and announcement Wednesday was a surprise even to his publicity director Mel Jeffries Puss was and is held in high esteem by his players by his athletic director Monk Younger and by his assistant coaches Chief Tilson Macauley McEver and Flake Laird You couldn't get one of them to say an unkind word about Puss They all thought his football system was sound and solid On several occasions it did look that way even to that school of alumni who continually shouted about an coaching staff There were times even this year when the Gobblers clicked like a high-class football team Puss always felt it keenly when people started talking about the wealth of material at his disposal and wondered why he get more out of his "potential I happened to cover some of his early-season games this fall when things were going from bad to worse with the Gobblers After each game I would run into Puss and he would ask me: what did you think about all our power out there today?" I really felt sorry for Puss who never tried to kid me before a ball game He always came right out and said "We got much of a At first I thought he was pulling the old crying act but as time went on and his predictions came true I began to realize he knew what he was talking about That Night in Washington I SAW PUSS in Washington that night after Georgetown had practically yucified te Gobblers winning 46-4 Those big Hoyas three deep in every position left nothing undone out there under the lights of Griffith Stadium Tech players were being carted off the field so fast you would have thought it was Dunkerque and the I dressing room resembled a field hospital so many were the casualties Puss himself looked like the world had caved in He was white as a ghost and even more morose than usual "Well do you still see that power' out he asked me Puss must have thought I started that story about Tech's alleged "potential the way he kept asking me about it The licking Georgetown handed the Gobblers would have wrecked most teams but strangely enough it had the opposite effect on Tech The team came back to score unexpected victories over Virginia Furman and Centre and looked good in doing so Maybe all that Puss kept denying was there after all At any rate against Virginia in Norfolk the Gobblers looked the part of a real football team and they must have been right good the day they scored 38 point on Furman I for one was convinced Tech had a fine chance to win over I After seeing the game though I knew I was wrong for it was not a game decided by the or freak plays The better team won and Puss admitted it line was better than and Joe Muha was the best back on the field Puss Breaks Clean SO PUSS REDD sat down there on the bench and puffed on his cigarette and watched his last Tech team lose its big game- Whatever he may have been thinking after the game nobody could guess for he showed no trace of emotion He told his boys how much he had enjoyed coaching them and what great fellows they were and complimented them individually on their play against I Tears came to the eyes of some of the seniors but Puss crack He broke clean and you help but admire him for the way he handled it Puss was a grand guy and a grand coach and sure he hopes that whoever succeeds him at Tech uncovers that mysterious "potential he was supposed to have but never could find BOND THEY'RE THE BEST VALUES WE KNOW OF IN FINE Topcoats at only If you're one of those who always have poo-pooed the idea that a really good topcoat at $25 was simply a wild dream then you're due for a sudden awakening for here are THREE OF THEM take a look a good look!
