prevail yesterday and North Carolina's Tar Heels beaten four times during the season handed the heavily favored Blue Devils beaten only by Tennessee a 6-3 licking and a crowd of 40000 spectators a big surprise It was Duke's first loss against Southern Conference competition since Carolina turned the same trick in 1937 -The Tar Heels in no way resembling the team which lost to the University of Richmond the week before (they even wore different jersies being clad in dark blue jersies instead of the familiar sky-blue ones they usually wear) won the hard way yesterday running and passing on a sustained drive of 75 yards culminating in a Jim Lalanne-to-Joe Austin pass to wipe out three-point lead gained in the second quarter by Tony field goal from the 21-yard line Carolina Scores Carolina's touchdown came (early in the fourth quarter and thereafter the Tar Heel forwards who played their very hearts out all the way rose to new heights to stave off Duke's frantic bid for victory The third-game charm worked again for the Tar Heels Duke having lost every third year to Carolina since Coach Wallace Wade started his regime at the "Duchy of Durham" Might didn't make the right' here yesterday before a crowd of less than 2000 persons who sat shivering in Lynchburg's new Municipal Stadium Muha started his one-man scoring pdrade early in the second quarter when he intercepted a pass and raced 65 yards to a touch' down and he finished It in the fourth period by adding two more touchdowns on short smashes at the line Nelson Catlett kicked two extra points from placement Muha missed the first one With the exception of cannon-ball smashes into the line and through it and a brief aerial attack with Son Shelby at the controls In the fourth quarter the Keydets had little to boast of offensively for Utp Terps outgained them on the ground and in the air Maryland made 13 first downs to I's eight- but most of the Terps' yardage was picked up in midfield or deep in their own territory Maryland Threatens Once Maryland threatened only once driving down to the 30 at -the tail end the third period but the threat was cooled off on the play of the fourth quarter when Joe Murphy fumbled and Billy Walker I's brilliant guard recovered for the Keydets on the 30-yard line From this point the Keydets marched the full 70 yards for their second touchdown the only sustained drive they staged Shelby started it going by passing to Muha for 12 yards and then the big sophomore reversed the battery and fired oqe to Shelby for 13 yards and a first down on Maryland's 40 Muha pounded Eagl es Edge Hoy as 19-18 hi Tliriller BOSTON A grand Boston College team that was amply equipped with fight speed and inspiration fought its way into the front ranks of the nation's football teams yesterday by removing Georgetown from the ranks of the undefeated 19 to 18 in a frantic struggle before 40000 frenzied customers at Fenway Park Content to win their first seven games with a minimum of plays and formations the unbeaten Eagles let the cat out of the bag and their trick plays with it as they played wide-open and smart football on offense determined football on defense and gamewinning football all the way Leading by 19 to 16 with 65 seconds left to play Boston was backed down deep in its own territory with fourth down coming up and 18 yards to go from its own nine Deciding to trust to its defense to keep Georgetown at bat for those 65 seconds the Eagles dropped Charley O'Rourke back into the end zone ostensibly for a punt Thrown for Safety But the 155-pound Eagle triple-threat a great back yesterday afternoon wasn't risking a blocked kick Like a penned-up fox and as smart O'Rourke scurried ck and forth in his end zone until finally he was downed as he had meant to be all the time That safety brought Georgetown up to within a point of Boston but Boston's faith in its defense proved to be founded on fact as the clock ran out with the desperate Hoy as fast getting nowhere Thus Georgetown went down to defeat for the first time in three seasons and 24 games and came through its eighth straight year without either defeat or tie Last night Eagle supporters were looking ahead to anticlimatic victories over Auburn and Holy Cross in the last two games and then an initatfS to the New Orleans Sugar Baste' This was a football team which proved to have the plays and the a
