times as much Sun Briar was taken to Louisville In 1918 as a favorite for the Derby Shortly after arriving at the Downs Kilmer purchased a bur chestnut gelding to work with Sun Briar In his morning exercises This horse was Exterminator Kilmer paid $9000 few him and two fillies Sun Briar turned sluggish before the race Kilmer scratched him and In order to keep hla colors in the Derby went to the post with Exterminator On a muddy track "Old Bones" out-sloshed the field to win a surprising victory A Great Gelding Before retiring Exterminator won $252996 and became one of the greatest geldings ever to gallop on the American turf Next to Man O' War he probably was the best loved horse in the country- So fond was Kilmer of Sun Briar that by the time the horse was retired to his stud farm at Binghamton he had renamed the place "Sun Briar Court" This farm when finally completed was regarded as one of the finest in America There and later in 1924 at his 1200 acre farm at New Market Va he bred foals which almost without exception were among the first 10 breeders annually Sun Briar his greatest stallion In a stretch of seven years had 35 winners among the 50 offspring he produced Thirteen of these were stake winners The American turf produced no keener student of breeding than Mr Kiimer He predicted once that Play would have the greatest influence on the horse of the That was the horse that sired the great Man O' War Mr Kilmer traveled extensively abroad in building up his breeding strings While in England on one of his tours he purchased a yacht which he transferred to
