THE YORK DISPATCH WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 21 1988 36 fear flhieini overcome Loygoinis 0 he get back up there? COMMENTARY caused him to get lost in his own reflection He wouldn't dive again and walked away from the meet "I talked about fear then" he said "I got a lot of flack from my teammates I didn't want to compete in that competition because I was afraid I'd lose the dive My coach told me that I couldn't weasel out of it and say I was sick "A lot of kids came up to me and said they appreciated what I said because they were scared sometimes too" Louganis said He paused adding: "Fear is not bad" Fear keeps a diver sharp Fear keeps a diver human This brush with mortality can only endear Louganis to the American people who love a winner but love a winner with recognizable human frailties even more Louganis now has three golds and a silver over three Olympics and another gold yet to win But it's the tape that we'll remember and see again and again And it's the courage of a man who admitted he was frightened that we'll keep with us psychologically because that was really hard to get over" Louganis said "I was still feeling rather shaken That's really part of the reason why Ron asked me to do more of my optional dives to work through the mental problems to get over the fear" He knows fear In 1983 he watched as a Soviet diver died A few minutes later Louganis attempted the same dive that had killed the Soviet Yes he knows fear In 1979 he was carried out of the' pool after hitting his head on a platform and being knocked unconscious "A1JI remember from that dive is jumping off the platform touch--ing my toes and seing the sun between my legs" Louganis said "A lot of times it's harder when you're conscious because you remember the pain" Returning to the diving board here he said was much harder Once many years ago he walked away from a competition in New Zealand after hitting a dive flat because the lighting at the pool not enough to say he's different any more that it's enough to say that he's the best diver of modern times Louganis at age 28 has a childlike vulnerability about him that you can't help but find engaging Your first inclination is to pat him on the head before you notice the sculptured body that defines only half the man This is the world-class athlete remember who reported to the world from the Los Angeles Olympics that he consulted his teddy bear before diving for gold Louganis was as you and I would be scared after his brush with fate He was stay-up-at-night scared He was God-let-me-get-through-this-OK scared Though he had no choice but to admit that to himself he also admitted his fears to anyone who would ask because that's who he is There were at least two or three moments that would have taken the measure of a lesser man The first came Monday after the accident when he still had two dives remaining So great is his skill that he could basically give up a dive and still qualify for the finals But could By Mike Littwin The Baltimore Sun SEOUL South Korea Greg Louganis has never seen the tape meaning he may be the only one left who hasn't Crash scenes have always played big and NBC-TV which is making a living on this Olympic moment tried to induce Louganis to watch He politely turned away thereby missing the quick steps into the jump the push into the air two regulation somersaults a stretch back toward the water and then the collision The pictures of the moment of impact are so vivid his head jerking upward as if he'd been shot the board vibrating that they stay with you like a bad stomach It was the dive heard round the world Louganis doesn't want to see it Not now with another diving com-petion left in these Olympics Maybe not ever "I didn't want that image in my mind" he said "As far as my perception goes I jumped off the board and heard a great clank That's my perception of the dive I don't want "I was pretty shaken" said Louganis who took four stitches soon after impact "I wasn't exactly sure how hard I hit I didn't know if I had a concussion or anything like that I was pretty confident I didn't but I didn't want to go up on the board bleeding" He walked back up and hit his dive as well as he's ever hit it which means as well as anyone's ever hit it One more dive and he was home free Until the next day Monday night he went to the pool early took a few more practice dives than normal and took about three attempts at the dive he had missed on each occasion jumping he said as far from the board as he could reach When his coach Ron O'Brien talked to him Louganis told him he was still shaken but eventually he would be sufficiently calm to conquer the diving world "It was a big victory for me just that visual image of seeing myself hit my head on the board He doesn't want to see it slo-mo or reverse angle or full speed The memory is scary enough The memory kept him up most of a night and nearly cost him another gold medal If you watched Louganis on' the board the next day you might well have asked yourself "Is this guy nuts? What do you have to do to convince him this is dangerous wave a flag?" Of course athletes not unlike warriors of old are inured to danger The words you're least likely to hear from any athlete other than "I'm overpaid" are "doubt" and "fear" In general an athlete would rather give up his shoe contract than admit even to himself that he's afraid And for divers where there is real danger the necessity is even greater Unless you're Greg Louganis It's OLYMPIC RESULTS US
