far away as Copenhagen You bow you're in trouble when somebody steals fcnir WV Union Just a few years ago compact disc players were the wave of the future and they were expensive In 1983 a regular table-model Sony CD player listed for about $900 Today prices are down dramatically The 26 regular models recently tested by the electronics engineers at Consumer Reports list from $180 to $599 But some models sell for as low as $140 after discount Three portable players and two models with automatic changers were also tested All have the necessary features and some even have frills Spend more money only if you want special features for special needs All of the models tested have standard operating controls plus digital displays that show which track is being played as well as the elapsed time And all can continuously repeat a track or an entire disc can be programmed to play separate tracks in any order and have an audible scan that lets you find a particular musical passage Many pricier models also have a full-function remote control and a feature that randomly selects the order of play Others include an external timer that can turn the units on and start them playing a disc that you previously loaded All of the players delivered superb sound and about a third did well under adverse testing conditions such as playing damaged discs or being bumped during play- If you want an inexpensive table model first consider the Sharp DX-611 ($150 at discount) the Sanyo CP700 ($180 list) and the Pioneer PD-5030 ($220 at discount) For a more full-featured model the top-rated Sony CDP-203 has a host of features and is very convenient to use It costs $380 discounted It has been discontinued but it may be available in some stores The Denon DCD-1300 would also be a good choice but finding one below its $550 price tag is tough Portable compact disc players are about as big as a ham sandwich fit easily into a home music system and are easy to carry about Though they cost about as much as low-priced table models they usually have fewer features Portables can operate on either AC current battery power The three tested the Sony D- 7S Technics SL-XP5 and the Toshiba XR-P9 all sounded as good as full-sized models They cost between $270 and $289 discounted The Sony scored best in performance tests and was the most convenient to use Changer models hold a number of discs in a magazine or carousel You can program tracks on different discs and a display shows the disc and track selected Both of the changer models tested the Pioneer PD-M6 and the Sony CDP-C10 performed well They were priced at $450 and $639 respectively after discounts Even as the popularity of CDs and CD players climbs they too like the LPs replaced may become victims of technology Digital audio tape or DAT will be introduced in the United States this fall The tape packaged in new small cassettes is supposed to match the playback performance of a CD and can be recorded on as well Although DAT players and tapes may not be affordable for years the CD industry is well aware that DAT Ww 0 Sunday May 17 1987 7:30 pm TICKETS: $6 $8 $1 0 I 50 George St York MADE POSSIBLE WITH ADVERTISING SUPPORT FROM THE
