Local police be' lieve there is a connection between the burglaries which were discovered this morning of four busines- sea in the same area of town. i A spokeswoman for the Hugo Police Department said Wednesday that investigators thought the same people would be involved in the crimes, which resulted in the theft of a total of $240 cash and damage to each business. Burglarized were: William's Boot and Saddle Shop, North Broadway.

Po; lice said $200 cash was taken from the shop after someone entered through the front door. The door's glass had been broken out with a rock, the spokeswoman said. Bright'n'Clean Laundry, 218 N. Broadway. After entering through a side door, someone damaged two coin-operated machines, taking $26 in coins from a candy-vendJng machine.

City Cleaners, 214 N. Broadway. Police did not describe how, but some type of hole was made in the shop's back door, allowing the burglar to reach through and move the bar which had been securing the door. Fifteen dollars were taken. Lone Star Gas 113 E.

Jackson St. Police said a hole was cut through the garage door to gain entry to the building. Though someone apparently tried to open the vault and several desk drawers, police said nothing was taken during the crime. Luna said that the petition, have had to be presented 90 days after the budget adopted in 1989 in order for a rollback election to be allowed for 1990. "But it wasn't presented until 1990, so that's too late to roll back the 1990 taxes," he said. "Now, of course, it's too late to roll them back at all. Next year, if there is a raise (in taxes) and they (petitioners) disagree and get a petition out, they'd have to roll back the taxes for 1992, and it would have to be presented within 90 days of the budget being set in 1991." In other action Monday, trustees extended the contract of Brooks by one year, which extended his contract to three years. Brooks said that his goals for the year include campus level planning, increased parental involvement and the implementation of a computer lab at the elementary level.

"(Early in the year we began) campus level planning meetings in which we're going to be working on our campus plans and redefining those and working from the campus level teacher up," he said. "We're going to be having some parental involvement meetings to try to help us. (Well be) establishing some goals for the next five years and the next as well. "Our immediate goal is the im- provement of basic skills for everybody; that's the purpose of the computer lab." Brooks said the district has applied for a grant of $200,000 in state funds to purchase a 32-unit integrated learning system to serve students in grades kindergarten through eight. He said the.

system would work with the handicapped, special services and student. "There was a $5 million target appropriation by the legislature and we applied for $200,000 of it on Dec. 3," Brooks said. "Otherwise, we have a contingency pi know we have funding for 60 percent of it through federal and state allocated funds. We're wanting to get 100 percent of it (through the grant.) "This system would help us in basic looked for a system that would work with any child.

It's a system we've worked with our staff with; the entire elementary staff has visited a lab and spent a day working withji." The system works with the reading, language arts, science and math curriculums. Brooks said the district hopes to receive word regarding the grant sometime this month, with plans of implementing the system before the end of this school year. Deaths Police investigating business fund theft Police are investigating a theft of $21,600, though officials feel the case will prove to be a civil matter. A 67-year-old Bagwell resident reported the theft.

He told police that someone had removed the funds from a business account at Lamar National Bank and used them for his own personal gain. Police said the suspect, who was apparently the business partner of the victim, may have left town. While investigators said the case would be presented to the I County Attorney's Office, a spokesman for the department said Wednesday the case would likely be considered a civil matter land not a criminal action. POLICE REPORTED Wednesday that a 27-year-old woman was assaulted and raped Tuesday morning in the 1000 block of West Cherry Street. Though investigators have yet to release the name, they did report that they do have a suspect in the case.

A 21-YEAR-OLD Paris man was arrested Tuesday night in connection with a burglary of a pickup which had been parked in the 200 block of 31st Street SW. He was charged with burglary of a vehicle and public intoxication, according to police. Officers said a $100 tool box, which had reportedly been taken from the pickup, was recovered at the time of the arrest. POLICE ARRESTED Nellie Walters, 24, on a charge of forgery by making. She was in the Lamar County Jail at the time.

After being arraigned on the forgery charge, she is being held in lieu of bonds totalling $10,000, according to a spokeswoman for the jail. A U.S. silver certificate and a two-dollar bill are only worth $3, but apparently that's enough to steal. Those two items were all that was taken early this morning during a burglary of Bright-Holland Funeral Home at 2601 Lamar Avenue. In a separate crime, a hand drill was taken during a burglary of Eodgers-Wade Manufacturing Co.

at 1401-3rd SW. The drill was valued at $90. OTHER ACTIVITY reported to police included seven misdemeanor thefts, four assaults, three reports of criminal mischief, a report of property damage and an aggravated assault. PARIS EMS paramedics responded to 12 calls; five transfers, three sick call, two emergencies, an injury and a backup. THE POWDERLY Fire Department responded to a structure fire in Powderly.

ACTIVITY REPORTED by the Lamar County Sheriffs Department included a disturbance in Roxton, a report of criminal mischief in Powderly, a car fire at the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 1499 and U.S. Highway 271 North, a report of harassment in Powderly, a theft in Deport, serving eight civil citations, a burglary of a vehicle at North Lamar. At 8 a.m. Wednesday, there were 97 Lamar County inmates; 92 in the Lamar County Jail, four out of the facility on a county work- release program and one escapee. Lois Mozelle Moore Lois Mozelle Moore, 81, of Texarkana died at her home Tuesday, Jan. 8. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Texarkana Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev.

T. Wayne Price officiating. Graveside services and burial will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Cemetery in Paris. Texarkana Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Moore was born July 10, 1909, in Enloe and had lived in Texarkana since 1934. She was a retired employee of the tax office of the Pleasant Grove Independent School District. She was a member of the St. Michael Volunteer Auxiliary and of the Rose Hill Baptist Church.

Her husband, Felton Moore, died in 1979. Surviving are, son arid Tom and Anita Moore of Austin; one grandson, Bradley Moore of Austin; and a brother, Dayton Cregg of Lawtori, Okla. Memorials may be made to the St. Michael Hospital Memorial Fund, Community Relations, P.O. Box 1140, Texarkana, Ark.

75504. Mrs. Glenn McCommon Mrs. Glenn (Hallie) McCommon, 85, of Wortham died Dec. 20 in Mexia Hospital.

Services were held Dec. 23 at Porter Funeral Home in Wortham. Mrs. McCommon was born April 27, 1905, in Sylvan, a daughter of George and Maggie Gibson Rodgers. She was a former elementary teacher at Amherst, Post Oak and Morgantown schools in Lamar County.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wortham. She married Mr. McCommon on June 23,1927, in Sylvan. He died in January 1984. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs.

Martin (Sarah) Stephens of Topeka, one son, Glenn McCommon Jr. of Houston; four grandchildren; one brother, David Rodgers of Oklahoma City, two sisters, Kathryn McElyea of Paris and Mary Vinyard of Longview. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Margaret in 1930 and Nancy in 1950; a sister, Mrs. Charlie (Gladys) Biard and a brother, Ike Rodgers. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Wortham.

Allen Dude Arant CARROLLTON Allen Dude Arant, 62, of Carrollton, formerly of Paris, died Monday, Jan. 7. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, in Metrocrest Funeral Home Chapel in Carrollton with the Rev.

Arant was born Feb. 16, 1928, in Lubbock. He was a member of the Petersburg Lodge No. 1126, the Scottish Rite in El Paso, and Kiva Temple in Amarillo. Surviving are wife, Jo; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gayla and Gait.
