Officials at the zoo say the hippo keeps its mouth open because it likes its gums massaged.

All four of us are natural athletes and have good coordination. We shot the film in sequence so we had the easy rapids first and hit the harder ones as we get better over the 13 weeks. "Even at that John and I wrecked eight canoes, and Ned and I almost drowned once." Cox admits it's a violent film, "but the violence is psychological, not the Sam Peckinpaw blood-all-over-the-screen gratuitous violence that you see in 'Straw Ours was realistic, the way four guys away from women act and talk.

"That scene where one of our guys is sexually attacked by a mountain man was tastefully done. You don't see anything, only the reaction in John Voigt's eyes. I loathe violence, but in this story you had to have something to push these men to murder. "Even though it was R-rated, I took both my boys to see the film, but I hope there are things that went over their heads." Cox's wife, Mary, who has a PhD in chemistry, and their sons, Brian 1, and John, 7, are traveling the summer circuit with him in their 1967 Volvo. Home for them at the moment is Rye in Westchester County and a rented house that's illed with what Cox called "Salvation Army and graduate school furniture and four Melmac plastic plates." The only change in their life style since the success of "Deliverance" is "we broke down and bought a portable color TV, a year-old model," Cox said, adding, "but only because our black and white set went poof! 'Mary and I figure as long as we don't get used to the money we won't need it.

And it's giving me time and the freedom to do what I want to do like taking the role of Dr. John Buchanan in "Summer and Smoke." "Like everything else that's happend to me in the last 18 months, 'Deliverance' brought that about. A friend of Eva's husband Jeffrey a who's our director, suggested me for the part. "I could have done guest star spots on 'TV shows for 26 weeks and made lots of money, and gone from a totally unknown actor to a totally overexposed actor, but I decided to build a long-range career. The work is the fun for me." Carpet 1 -V' Vv viRiO cPr -u Wl I 1.9 look you wnt-.

That controversial movie that ranked second only to "The Godfather" as 1972's smash box office hit was his first film. Before it was shown, Cox was a struggling unknown actor. Since its phenomenal he has become a star, deluged with TV and movie offers and financial rewards he hardly dreamed about in his '10 years of professional acting. That money in his pocket could have been even more. "But I made a quarter million dollar mistake in the movie," he said.

Cox, 34, a sandy-haired, rangy, 6-foot-2 non-stop talker, Is -co-starring with Eva Marie Saint in Tennessee Williams' play, "Summer and Smoke," now making the summer stfawhat circuit. "I play the guitar fairly well, even put myself through college working with a rock and roll band and later as a folk singer," Cox said. "That talent was instrumental in my getting the movie role. In one scene I play a song with a little mountain boy. J'The kid couldn't play the banjo at all, and it was decided we'd have the song recorded and fake our action to; the playback.

Actually during the shooting I matched played note for note to the playback, which is harder than doing the recording, but that wasn't me on the soundtrack. I'The song 'Duelin' has been around many ysars, but as a result of the movie it became a huge hit." He groaned, then said, "One quarter a million dollars in royalties missed because I was too involved with canoe practice to make the musical recording!" The recording of the sound track, which was made by folk musicians Steve Mandel on the guitar and Eric Weissberg on the banjo, sold copies. There was nothing fake or dubbed in about the expert white-water canoeing Ronny add the other three stars, Burt Reynolds, John Voigt and Ned Veatly do in the film, based on the James Dickey novel about four friends conquering the Chatooga River in Georgia. a tt Mm 1. i :1 Guarantee' Shop at Home Call your nearest Rosso's and we will bring samples right to your home where you" can coordinate them with your Lt 'w Ask about Rosso's exclusive lnstallation and Wear Youth seminar on nudism Reservations are now being taken for a week-long youth seminar on nudism beginning Sunday at the Olive Dell Nudist Ranch here.
