You should have respect for your audience and strive for beiievability.

charac terization and motivation. If you don't reach these honestly no amount of gadgetry will work He added. "Some people confuse science fiction with flying through space But first you have to establish an atmosphere of beiievability that allows the audience to accept that. The test I always use is that if it's a believable story it would work just as well in Dodge City or in Blair General Hospital." Roddenberry has just completed the filming of "Genesis II." a two-hour movie pilot for J) that is a perfect replica of a human being, called "Questor." and has two other projected series under consideration. Science fiction stories could move in strong soon as staple TV fare.

Nine science fiction pilots are said to be under consideration at the networks and. by the time the fall schedules are inked in by the networks, several could be on the boards One factor that contributed to the success of "Star Trek" was its optimism, that there was hope for the future. The show never reached high enough in the ratings to survive more mentod Into many alien from one another. but it -inspired a worldwide cult that is still growing The reruns rf still seen on 125 stations in the United States and in 60 foreign countries Despite the fact that "Gen. esis II" is set about 125 yean after the collapse of Western civilization. Roddenberry said he did not see it as a "down" show "It's about the adaptability of man." he said "Every time a civilization falls it springs stronger It was similar to what happened after the fall of Rome The civilization was fragmented and each group hung on to some memory of the past" This is the springboard for making it a series Instead of planet-hopping as in "Star' Trek." the hero goes from one fragmented society to another. One has reverted to the old West, another lives like the Indians, another is frozen in the "good old days" of 1932, in another women's liberation has triumphed, in another black men hold white slaves. Roddenberry said he sees science fiction as virtually the only area in television where writers have great freedom to make social comment.

Writers can comment about this world under the guise of writing about other worlds. By Jack Anderson maim or cripple deer and other animals instead of killing them outright. Despite the unsuccessful court proceedings, the Interior Department has begun a quiet survey to see whether hunters should be given tests with their weapons before they hunt in the federal refuges. The department, in an internal memo, also says it is considering present statistics on how many animals are able to live on the lands and h'ow many are crippled by hunters. The study also touch on the weapons themselves.

The director, Vittorio Schi-raldi. says the author of the novel and script writer for the American movie, Mario Puzo, "didn't know his Mafia." Schi-raldi is the author of "Kiss the Hand," and has written a screen version of it that he says "will look at the Mafia from the inside." At least six other Mafia films are being produced in Italy, where the subject matter can be sensitive because of Mafia entrenchment Rod Steiger and Ewa Aulin are two of the stars. Even Charles Siragusa, a real-life U.S. detective who tailed Mafia kingpin Lucky Luciano, is in one of the movies.

The films include "The Godmother," "The Godson." "Lucky Luciano," and Alberto Anastasia." "It's a fascinating subject with no end." says Siragusa, who stalked Luciano for 18 years and does the same in the movie. Steiger portrays Luciano. Siragusa also criticizes "The Godfather." "It glorified crime and made the Godfather the hero," said the former U.S. narcotics agent who now is executive director of the Illinois Crime Commis-. sion.

Rolled toward a group of children.

Didn't hit anyone. Turned it over to dealer. Never heard any more. Yesterday right wheel sheared off." The evidence in the documents has been supplemented by discussions with the concerned GM employes, in describing one serious defect, an employe close to the problem said sadly: "GM will conceal things. They have a wanton disregard for the public's safety when they allow something like this to go unresolved.

They haven't recalled the cars; they haven't notified anybody. It probably one of the most serious problems that ever existed. He said UM attitude was strictly "dollar, money. These internal papers show that the great motor moguls, despite their past embarrassments at the hands of Ralph Nader, are continuing to cover up serious safety defects in the vehicles they turn loose on the highways. GM has been forced to recall millions of defective cars in order to repair faulty engine mounts and steering systems. But the documents in our possession show that at least a dozen other critical hazards plague millions more cars that have not been recalled. These defects are described in an array of documents that range from Dealer Service Problem Reports to GM's hush-hush Form 1241 reports on preliminary inyestigations. Some of the reports bear notations such as "GM RESTRICTED: Not To Be Disclosed Outside G.M.

Corporation." We also have confidential minutes of internal meetings and photographs intended for GM eyes only. GM has taken extraordinary precautions to keep these documents from getting out. In a five-page letter, Board Chairman Richard C. Gerstenberg last October reminded employes that "strict security is essential to the successful operation of every phase of our business." He warned of "appropriate disciplinary action" against employes violating corporate security. A month later, GM Vice President John Z.

DeLorean told a secret mangement conference: "Every defect each recall only diminishes the credibility of whatever amount of advertising we do The plain and simple truth is that poor quality threatens to destroy us." G.M seems more interested, nevertheless, in covering up Jheir defects than improving the quality. The attitude betrayed in the secret papers is that GM still puts profits ahead ot people. The company has failed to notify car owners ol chronic problems. in such vital automotive components as steering, brakes, visibility, electrical systems. This failure alert the public has endangered motorists and pedestrians alike.
