a Census Bureau report said today In Northern and Western states young black families reached an income comparable with that cf their white counterparts In a study based on statistics from the 1970 census the bureau cited gains in home ownership and voting strength for the 23 million black citizens More black youths are attending college and fewer are dropping out of high school the report said however in 1972 blacks still lag behind whites in most social and economic areas although the differentials have narrowed ever the the report said Impressive The most impressive gain according to the study was among families under 35 years of age in the North and West where both husband and wife worked In that the median income for black families in 1970 was $11045 in 1970 compared to $10578 for a comparable white family For the nation as a whole the young family income figures were $9267 for blacks and $10396 for white The report also noted that young black working wives earned about 30 per cent more than their white counterparts In education the study showed that the high school dreout rate for blacks had dropped sharply to 111 per cent in 1971 but was still higher than the 74 per cent rate for white students On the college level the number of black students enrolled increased from 10 to 18 per cent between 1965 and 1971 while the proportion of white college students remained stable at about 22 per cent In the 1960-1970 decade black home ownership increased from 38 to 42 per cent And although there was more overcrowding in black than white homes most of the crowded homes were in rural areas rather than in city slums On employment the report said still are overrepresented in most lower-paying less skilled jobs and underrepresented in the better-paying high-skilled Moreover the unemployment rate for blacks and other non-white minorities was 99 per cent last year compared to 54 per cent for white workers But blacks have made inroads in white collar and better paying skilled labor jobs the report said from 3 million in 1960 to 5 million last year MOTORCYCLIST HURT Memorial Osteopathic Hospital reported treating William McGinnis 22 of 720 Princess St at 3:40 pm Tuesday for
