Re- Russ Space Shot Around Moon Told JORDELL BANK, England (UPI) The Jnrdell Bank Observatory reported today that a Russian space vehicle had passed within 1,000 miles of the moon and was now believed on its way back to earth. The announcement said the shot could represent the first of a final series of Russian lunar probes leading to the landing of a man on the moon. The observatory's director, Sir Bernard Lovell, said the probe passed its nearest point to the moon at 12:55 A.M.

EDT today. The Jodrell Bank scientists had been picking up signals from the moon probe in 40-minute bursts throughout the night, a spokesman said. The Russians were thought to be trying to achieve another first in space by looping a space probe around the moon and then to have it land back on earth again. If they succeed, the Jodrell spokesman said, if would be an important step forward for putting a man on the moon.
