for one touchdown and ran for another as Virginia erased 16 years of frustration against Maryland with a 24-23 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over the Terrapins yesterday Virginia which had lost 16 straight games to Maryland dating to 1972 did not lock up the triumph SOUTH SOUTHWEST ch was to minimize the pressure on the team The victory for 6-4 and 5-1 in the Southwest Conference extended its winning streak ovei-TCU to 16 games TCU finished with a season record of 4-7 It is 2-5 in the SWC North Texas 33 Rice 17 HOUSTON North Texas quarterback Scott Davis ran for two touchdowns and completed two touchdown passes leading the Eagles to a victory over Rice The Eagles extended losing streak to 17 games the longest in the nation The Owls dropped to an 0-10 record and the Eagles now are 8-3 for the season Baylor 17 Texas 14 WACO Texas Eldwin Raphel bolted 50 yards for a fourth period touchdown to rally the Baylor Bears to a victory over the Texas Longhorns in a windblown Southwest Conference game Baylor ended its season with a winning 6-5 record and 2-5 in SWC play Texas which has a game left on Thanksgiving night against Texas is 5-5 and 2-4 Texas-El Paso 31 Air Force 24 EL PASO Texas Texas-El Paso marked up its winningest season in history and earned an Independence Bowl bid with a victory over Air Force It was the 10th win of the season against only two losses The most victories they had recorded before was when they went 9-2 in 1956 Air Force dropped to a 5-6 mark with one game to play The Falcons will travel to Hawaii next week FROM WIRE REPORTS TULSA Okla The University of Tulsa depended on its defense and a good rushing game to beat Temple 15-10 yesterday defense which allowed its previous nine opponents more than 400 offensive yards per game capitalized on five fumbles by Temple and held the Owls to 194 yards Sophomore Brett Adams ran for 170 yards and a touchdown to lead Tulsa to the victory It was only the second time this season a Tulsa player has rushed for 100 yards or more in a game and the first time rushing game took control The Hurricane known for a strong passing game headed by sophomore TJ Rubley finished with 222 rushing yards and only 41 passing Both teams floundered on the slippery field as a cold steady rain persisted and a brisk north wind gusted at 25 mph The only touchdown came on the second play of the fourth quarter on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Matt Baker to Nelson Herrera Tulsa improved to 3-7 with the victory while Temple fell to 3-7 The nasty weather also made it difficult for players to hold on to the slippery ball Temple fumbled six times recovering only one of its losses while Tulsa recovered all three of its fumbles Baker a graduate of Central High School finished with 98 yards on 10 5-2 in the ACC Moore a redshirt sophomore rallied the Cavaliers from a pair of deficits and set a new Virginia single-season record for total offense with 2526 yards breaking the mark of 2356 set a to go Zolak tried to pass to the tailback for the two-point conversion but the pass was broken up by the Jason Wallace and Keith McMeans Carolina St 14 Pittsburgh 3 RALEIGH NC Mai Crite and Todd Varn capped two long scoring drives with short touchdown runs and North Carolina State secured its berth in the Peach Bowl yesterday with a victory over Pittsburgh The victory ended NC season at 7-3-1 snapped a three-game winless streak and helped the Wolfpack earn its second bowl trip in three seasons under coach Dick Sheridan In 1986 more quarterback Frankie DeBusk ran for a touchdown and passed for 141 yards and a second score to lead Furman to a victory over The Citadel and a share of the Southern Conference Championship Furman ranked No 5 in Division I-AA finished its regular season with a 9-2 record and 6-1 in the conference The Citadel ranked No 9 finished with an 8-3 record and a 5-2 conference slate Richmond 24' William Mary 19 RICHMOND Curtis Jefferson a wide receiver turned quarterback ran 84 yards for a touchdown on his first collegiate carry and completed his first college pass for a 60-yard touchdown to rally Richmond to a victory over William Mary Richmond finished 4-7 William Mary fell to 6-4-1 Jefferson who had been a high school quarterback but not played the position in college rushed for 118 yards on 17 carries Sam Yaffa who scored the other Richmond touchdown on a 61-yard run off a fake punt had 123 yards on 19 carries Appalachian St 34 Wake Forest 34 tie WINSTON-SALEM NC Bobby fourth touchdown pass a 25-yarder to Ritchie Melchor with 1:54 left and Bjorn extrapoint lifted Appalachian State into a tie with Wake Forest Both teams ended the season 6-4-1 Memphis St 28 Vanderbilt 9 MEMPHIS Tenn Rusty Trail threw for one touchdown and ran for another and Damon Young returned a pass interception 62 yards for a score as Memphis State downed Vanderbilt to bring the school its first winning season in five years The victory allowed Memphis Southeastern Conference rival Kentucky Francis threw scoring strikes of 14 and 6 yards to Thomas Woods who caught 11 passes for 91 yards He threw scoring passes of 12 and 19 yards to Alvin Harper as Tennessee won its fourth straight game to better its record to 4-6 2-4 in the SEC Kentucky finished its season' 5-6 2-5 Virginia Tech 27 James Madison 6 BLACKSBURG Va Will Fur-rer hit Myron Richardson with a 44-yard touchdown pass to put Virginia Tech ahead in the third period and the Hokies went on to defeat Division I-AA James Madison to wind up the season for both teams The Ho- kies finished at 3-8 James Madison fell to 5-6 in losing to its Division I-A foe that now leads the series 2-0 Delaware State 28 Howard University 21 WASHINGTON Delaware State quarterback Darren Felton ran for two NEW ORLEANS Terrence Jones passed for 144 yards and two touchdowns before he was injured in the first half and Tulane held on to beat Mississippi State The victory evened record at 5-5 heading into the 91st Big Game yesterday The season-ending tie left the two archrivals deadlocked for last place in the Pacific-10 California missing out on a chance for its first winning season since 1982 wound
