The Salt Lake Tribune UTAWLNIERMOUNTAIN Sunday March 20 1994 Is Serial Killer Stalking Hookers In Great Basin? ficult to pinpoint a cause of death "We suspect she died by strangulation although we have not ruled out gunshots" says Emery County sheriffs Del Bill Dowpara "There are several similarities to the cases in Millard Juab and Elko counties but right now it's just theory" 1 A vont i Pl C' c' A 1 11 '1 4 fat aillt 4 vv: ii ii s- -1 1 c- ft -c I It i iT! Elko County Nev to the others)" says St George police Det Dennis Bailey "We ran it by the FBI and while there were similarities to the other cases they did not say for sure that this one was connected" And there is another case that has investigators wondering In March 1992 a trucker parked along 1-80 near Rock Springs Wyo spotted the nude body of a woman in the bushes Sweetwater County Sheriff Gary Bailiff still is trying to find out who she is "We've run her fingerprints dental records sent out fliers went on TV with it but nothing" he says "The best break we got was identifying her tattoo a rose on her chest A guy in Tucson who has a tattoo parlor across from a truck stop remembers doing it for her but he never got a name" While the Wyoming murder is similar in most respects to the Utah and Nevada killings the woman near Rock Springs was killed in an unusual manner Only after a second autopsy did specialists discover she died when a sharp object was forced up her nostril into her brain "It is very peculiar and apparently this method may be taught autopsy ala spe- she died when a Ls forced up her )rain mliar and appar- id may be taught in some form of martial arts" says Bailiff "But we've never run across a case with it before" Utah and Nevada authorities recently compared their cases with three unsolved female homicides in eastern Washington state But Spokane Det Jim Peterson says they do not believe the 1990 shooting deaths of three area prostitutes are related to the Utah and Nevada crimes "Ours were not displayed like those bodies were the caliber of weapon was different and these were all older local prostitutes" he says "We arrested a person for some other major crimes who was convicted and sent to prison whom we have a hunch was responsible for these deaths Everything here stopped after he was charged" But across the Great Basin of Nevada and Utah law officers believe the killer will strike again "Somebody else with another homicide case may find the clue that all the rest of us need to solve these" says Millard County's Det Kimball "Well eventually get him But when and after how many more I don't know" ODD St George Mystery: Another unsolved murder in St George echoes the pattern In April 1991 a landscaper gathering rocks found the body of 32-year-old Linda Sherman a Las Vegas prostitute who had been seen earlier in St George Sherman was lying on her back along a dirt road about two miles east of 1-15 in the Bloomington Hills area She had been killed less than an hour earlier by several small-caliber gunshots to the head Sherman hal been sexually assaulted and was wearing only a sweat shirt although her clothes were piled about 10 feet away Some investigators wonder if the killer was scared off before he could pose the corpse "You could say she was in a display position but it's not identical 1 story last month about the three deaths some 40 viewers sent in ideas and possible clues including one on body positioning "One guy called in didn't leave his name and said to check the bodies in relation to compass points" says Millard County Dd Kimball "But that would only mean something to the killer" A common theory among hives- tigators is that the murderer is a truck driver who picks up women outside the region then dumps 4 their bodies along freeways Al-- though the bodies were found near interstates there are problems with the trucker-killer theory: II Any big rig using the old dirt road where the Juab County victim was found would have left um mistakable tracks in the sage- brush Millard County's victim was shot atop a hillside along a straight stretch of 1-15 A sandy barrow pit provides the only parking and a heavy vehicle would get stuck easily "She came up here alive with him either at gunpoint or not knowing what was going to happen" says Kimball standing atop the knoll "There's a nice view It's the kind of place you might take a girlfriend" March Madness Days Have It
