Cougars did get back to winning Saturday fending off Northeast Louisiana 24-10 on a cold drizzly afternoon at Cougar Stadium "Nothing comes easy I guess" BYU coach La Vell Edwards said after watching the Cougs struggle for the third straight week against a losing team BYU squeaked past UTEP (3-6) two weeks ago and was atrocious in last Saturday's three-touchdown loss to Arizona State (3-6) The Cougars made the Indians (1-8) look pretty good too But they also played with a little fire moved the ball consistently scoring was another story and came up with three big plays on defense On this day it was enough "There was no finger-pointing this week" said receiver Bryce Doman "After Arizona State we had some people blaming each other But we had none of that this week We stayed together" "We made mistakes" noted offensive coordinator Roger French "But the kids battled They fought hard" They had to The Cougars (8-2) trailed 7-3 in the first quarter when NLU quarterback Raymond Philyaw hit the speedy Stepfret Williams with a 44-yard touchdown strike BYU rallied for a 10-7 advantage and never trailed again But the Cougars didn't finish off the Indians until John Walsh threw a 9-yard scoring pass to Hema Heimuli with 4:36 left "We played hard and we played well against a good football team" said NLU coach Ed Zaunbrecher "All we ask of our team is that they be in a position to win in the fourth quarter and we got close" Closer than you might imagine: Early in the second quarter the Indians were knocking with third-and-goal at the 3 Free safety Cory Cook picked off a Philyaw pass at the goal line Late in the third quarter NLU had third-and-goal at the 5 Cook burst through on a blitz nailed Philyaw for a 9-yard loss and forced the Indians to settle for a field goal With shooting" For the Jazz who limited the Sonics to 39-percent shooting Karl Malone and John Stockton finished See JAZZ Page C-14 It didn't seem to matter in the game's first 22 minutes The Utes took a 21-3 lead on a 56-yard bomb to Kevin Dyson and two scoring bursts by tailback Charlie Brown But then the Utes displayed a self-destructive streak that Dennis Rodman would envy The (partial) rap sheet: Three drive-killing turnovers all in Lobo territory Two were Mike McCoy interceptions after the Utes had marched 30 and 65 yards the other a Rob Hamilton fumble after a 37-yard drive "You just can't fumble You do whatever you have to do wrap the ball up to not fumble" said McBride "We should have scored at least field goals" on all those possessions The Lobos by contrast had no turnovers but probably should have A Kareem Leary interception was negated by pass interference (the Lobos scored a touchdown on the drive) and safety Harold Lusk failed to fall on a Pearlman tumble instead fumbling himself while trying to scoop the ball "I can't blame nobody but myself" Lusk admitted "That could have been one of the game's turnarounds" The Utes failed to convert a pair of third-and-short plays in the third quarter against the NCAA's third-worst defense Passes fell incomplete both times allowing UNM to dominate the quarter A 29-yard fourth-quarter field goal try "just a simple extra point" according to McBride went awry when the snap was bounced to holder Jason Jones The kick sailed wide left New Mexico did distinguish itself in the third quarter holding the ball for See UTES Page C-15 By Phil Miller THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE ALBUQUERQUE NM Wait till the football pollsters hear the news: The Utes have finally beaten a Top 10 team Themselves The Utes' game plan worked to perfection Saturday but the New Mexico Lobos executed it and stunned ninth-ranked Utah 23-21 Using a ball-control offense a sturdywhen-it-counted defense and an exhaustive string of Utah mistakes the 4-6 Lobos shut out the Utes in the second half scored the game's final 20 points and electrified the second-largest crowd in University Stadium history (30743) In the end the goalposts came tumbling down and with them the 8-1 Utes' Top 10 ranking and dream of a perfect season But the Utes might as well have helped tear the posts down they were convinced they had handed UNM perhaps its biggest win ever "If we play our best and they beat us that's different" said a somber Luther "But we didn't play well at all that's what hurts" "It's not so much what they did it's what we didn't do" said a hoarse coach Ron McBride who met the media with his face buried in his hands "We had so many opportunities to win the game" But only the Lobos could seize them Trailing 21-20 with four minutes remaining quarterback Stoney Case led The Associated Press A sign of respect for the Utes: New Mexico fans tear down the goal posts after the upset Saturday the Lobos on the game-winning drive culminating in Nathan Vail's third field goal a 22-yard chip shot with 32 seconds left Most galling to McBride was that the Utes seemed to have New Mexico stopped on its own 27 But on fourth down and 3 Case hit Gavin Pearlman with a short pass in the left flat The senior wideout who had a career-high 123 receiving yards broke two tackles and streaked to the Utah 17 "If we just make one play we win" said McBride "We gotta make one play II See BYU Page C-15 STATavomvErA HAmetoNsHIR Finally!
