stand between Saltair's new investors and the kind of financial disaster the resort's developers suffered in 1983 Saltair reopened briefly that year just as the Great Salt Lake began its historic rise But as new developers plan Saltair's grand reopening in June the lake is moving in the opposite direction Developers are designing new concessions so that the fickle lake does not leave them high and dry "What they're trying to do out there does not depend on the water level" said Steve Roberts associate director of Utah's Parks and Recreation Division Among the planned attractions: food concessions concerts dancing and a pool of salt water pumped from the lake for people unable to make the quarter-mile trek from the resort to the water The resort's developers led by Salt Lake attorney Walter Plumb could not be reached for comment Wednesday State officials said tourists who have made the lake one of the Utah's top attractions now will have something to do on the south shore "Tourists were coming out here to do nothing in a lot of cases" said Clint Baty harbor master at Great Salt Lake State Park Even without facilities to accommodate them nearly three-quarters of a million people stop in the park annually he said Utah owns the land with developers operating Saltair as a concession The state grew impatient last year with Saltair Resorts Inc the resort's previous owners and imposed a deadline for cleaning up the flooded-out facility New developers have just cleaned out the last of the mud left when the lake level peaked at about 4213 feet in 1987 11 feet higher than it is now The lake's rise ended just as the state completed its massive pumping project to dump water into the west desert But like the previous developers the new owners still must grapple with the vagaries of the lake "It'll never be stable" Mr Roberts said Utah Maker of Hormone Patch Strikes Marketing Deal By Steven Oberbeck THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE A Utah company that has breaking into the franchise business The four include Super 8 Motels Inc Grease Monkey International Inc Choice Hotels International and McDonald's Restaurants The meetings held this week on the Navajo reservation in the Four Corners Region are counter to the tribe's usual approach to creating jobs for its members according to Tribal President Peterson Z311 "The mentality of the Navajo leadership all these years has been to attract one big huge company that will employ thousands of Navajos But when you look at the American economy it is small business that employs the most people" he said About 150 people turned out for meetings at three reservation communities with most questions centering on financing and licensing Fewer than 20 franchise operations now operate on the
