16E The Salt Liilc Tribune Sunday. Member 16, 14 Dune' PI in THEATRE MOVIE Girt BOOKS available at ALL THEATRES' Reading book is prerequisite to seeing film playing villains, especially by Kenneth McMillan, borders on broad comedy. The other characters are played with stiff formality McMillan's performance as the flying Baron Yladmir Harkonnen is the best of the film. The actor creates a menacing villain, one of the most fearsome that can be imagined Another annoying element is how-characters go undeveloped. The cast list of "Dune" is impressive to say the least Along with McMillan, there's Jose Ferrer.

Max Von Sydow, Brad Dourif. Linda Hunt (who recently won an Oscar for "The Year of Living Dangerously '). Freddie Jones and Sting, of the rock group The Police But many of these actors, particularly Linda Hunt and Sting, have little more than cameo roles. If you blink, you might miss Linda Hunt altogether Kyle MacLachlan is fine as the earnest Paul Atreides. although his transition into the messiah is a bit much to be believed.

Francesca Annis gives a credible performance as Lady Jessica. Paul's mother. But even some of the leads are underdeveloped. It is confusing here Jose Ferrer's character, The Emporer. fits into the whole scheme of things.

By Terry Orme Tribune Staff Writer If you want to understand "Dune" the movie, read "Dune" the book. At least that's my impression, having accomplished neither. In bringing Frank Herbert's popular science fiction novel to the screen, director screenwriter David Lynch (The Elephant has concocted a visually stunning, but for the most part incomprehensible movie. His images are large, ornate and overpowering. The fascination is in atching the rotechmcs.

not in following the plot There's too much going on for those of us ho are uninformed Film review Lynchs mowe is filled with language invented by Herbert The filmmaker appears to have been as faithful as possible to the original work, condensing a 412 page book into a tw hour and 10 minute movie a feat in itself. The effect is like reading a Russian novel and trying to get all the names and places straight. Set in the year 10.991. the story cen Visually this is a film of huge scope the giant worms opening their mouths, exposing bottomless throats; the opulent castles that interstellar royalty call home; the fantastic gadgets. which obviously operate by a different set of physical laws than the ones we know.

At the same time, I always felt that I was missing out on something, not understanding all that was supposed to be happening. A story of a young man who becomes the benevolent ruler of the universe should have some degree of spirituality. Lynch gives tastes of that spirituality in the dreams and the psychic phenomena, but other times the story seems too much like a routine science fiction adventure. Bringing a book to the screen is a difficult proposition in any case. Either you are criticized for not being faithful to the original story, or of not making a film which can't stand on its own.

I'm afraid David Lynch has left himself open for the latter. By remaining faithful to the book, however. Lynch chose the more difficult row to hoe. If his film is less than successful it because he aimed his sights too high. It's hard to criticize anyone for that LAST WEEKEND MILLIONS OF PEOPLE FELL IN LOVE WITH FALLING IN LOVE SINK tmZtKS $2 75 ANYTIME! DAIIY IN DOLBY STERtO 500.

Young Paul Atreides. we are told, is destined for greatness After he meets the Fremen, who inhabit Arrakis, he acquires the mystic skills to become the messiah of the universe if only he can defeat the grotesque and evil Harkonnens That's a bare-bones plot summary To go into detail would take pages The successful aspects of Lynch film lie in its imagery. Many of the characters are psychic, and the director conveys this by showing us their dreams. We see an image from a dream later repeated when the character is awake.

It is an interesting device, and one hich lends a mystical tone to the film One puzzling aspect of Lynch direction. however, is how his villains are so flamboyantly bad while the story's heroes are sometimes bland as white bread The acting by those only thing thats real.
