Wo call tho of our readers to a local notice from the Cleveland and Buffalo Petroleum Company, announcing to their stockholders that they have declared a dividend of on per' cent, on the capital stock ($180, 000) of their company, for tho month ending January 15th. We are happy to be able to chronicle this most expressive indication of the reliability of this excellent compa ny. I Nolled.

Sxow and Slop.

The sun rose almost cloudlessly yesterday morning, and continued shining most of the forenoon, making, with tbe aid of a mild wind, the frozen ground and ice relent. The River and Park had offered rare privileges for skating, but the ice was soon ruined, and the streets grew sloppy. About three o'clock in the afternoon it began snowing again, and he must be clairvoyant or omniscient who can tell what tho weather will be this morning. Joke on the Income- Tax List. A man in this city seeing his name down, or hearing that it was down, in the income tax list which we have been publishing, thought that it was a list of advertised letters, and believing that a lettor was in this Post Office for him, containing the sum of money set opposite his name, ho went in good faith to the office and call-d for said advertised letter.

What a wonderfully clear mind that man has PnoTOGRAPirv. Wo loarn that A. C. North, a ion of the well-known photographer. W.

C. North, of this city, has established himself the photographic business in Toledo, in connection with Mr. Oswald, formerly of this city. We wish him success. He is the son of one of the best photographic artists in the West, and wo most cordially recommend him to the patronage of the people of Toledo.

He will be sure to jive satisfaction. ROBERT DURANT, THE BURGLAR. ROBERT DURANT, THE BURGLAR. His Arrest and Escape---He Is Shot, But Gets Away. Detective McKinstry gives the particu- lars of an adventure he and ex-Sheriff Lewis recently had with a desperate bur glar, which, in the hands of Sylvanus Cobb, would find a place in the Ledger.

The account concerns xine Robert Durant, the leader of a clique of burglars who car ried on an exteneivo business in their lino lost summer, in this city and tho neigh- boring towns. This Durant was housed a term in tho Slate's Prison of Michigan for indulging iu the diversion of killing a police officer. Although he is a young man, not twenty- five years of age, he has run a career of crime in ork State, and he has two orovners oi iiko twuujf nu uiuisgii, nf whom tha Dftroit iail could not avail to I About a fortn.ght ago dotecUve Mekins- try learned that tea mother of Durant lived in Buffalo, and going there ho was informed that the sons had recently taken her to Monroeville in this State. Mr." McKinstry, accompanied by Mr. Lewis, went to Monroovillo Inst week, and concealed themselves near the newly bought Durant premises, to watch the op- erations oi tho propriotorB.

Early in the mnmitiff sfu. ihAip an'ivnl TtoVtArt Durnnt i crossed over irom hiB houso to the depot near by Lewis and McKinstry set out, and the former went up to Durant, and drew on him a warant of arrest. UUi luik aa mi aa ivl ibii iuu nuu uuvuu.u, and exprefisci a wish to go to a store in the neighborhood. The detectives sgrecd to this, and they walked, one by his side and the other clo-e behind him. Just as they reached the store, Durant bounded away from them, whereupon McKinstry fired twice, the second shot wounding Durant in the leg and causing him to stumble, but picking himself up again he fled to tho woods, followed by his brother, James Durant, whom bis shout had aroused and set skedaddling, hatless and for tho forest.

The officers pnreued, but could not overtake them. Another brother, younger, mounted a fleet horse taken from their stable, and pressed swiftly after his brother fugitives. Two citizensrolunteered to go in pursuit, and set out on two fleet horses, but the ro- sun oi tneir cnaso is not mown. Tho detectives describe Robert Durant as follows: Ho is about twenty three years old, six feet in height, light complexion, eyes light blue, moustache dyed black, artificial up- teeth, and of about two hundred pounds weight, A reward of one hundrod dollars is offered bycx-Shoriff Lewis and detective McKin- stry, for the lodgement of said Robert Du- rant in any jail. Academy of Mcaic, Despite the storm last night, and the sloppy walks, the Academy crowded by ladies and gentleman, parents and their saucer-eyed children, who were bound to see the sight before it should bo too lato.

Wo wero gratified to see so full a bouse, as it was tho benefit of Mr. Charles Hartt, tho scenic artist of the exhibition. The spectacle was heralded by the rich old comedy called at the Swan," in which Mr. Lewis, as "Jacob Earwig," and Mrs. Bradshaw, as "Miss Moonshine," wore more "killing" even than usual.

Mr. Locke, as Raspberry Jam "Peter Pippin," was superlatively It proved one of best hits of the season. Then, after an interval of music and preparation, the curtain rose and revealed the Oriental Prosporo in his cave of wonders. Tho audience were rapt from beginning to end of the gorgeous spectacle and wont away wondering at the ingenuity of the human hand that could contrive so brilliant a body fr such fantastic dreams and imaginations. This is positively the farewell week of A-laddin, and every one will be sorry, afterwards who does not avail himsolf and herself of the opportunity of seeing this won -derfal spectacle.

Attf.mpttoBbeak Jail Timely Discovery of Opebatioss. It is but a short time since wo gave an acconnt of an attempt made by threo convicted burglars to break jail, and but just now the old jail has boon put to another test. Wit is stronger than wood or stone or iron, if it has half a chance, so had it not been for the suspicio wnich Sheriff Xicola has had ever si' jce his ad ministration began, suspic- that some one was trying to bre strict watch he bask' have boen a iren' i -i IRll-rlAllvnrv hnrA Inaf Sunday or yjl 1 states that on Sunday he found ip the cell of one of the Eintleys files. saws and chissels, and from the pre- TIC'isly discovered fact that these burglars c'dld leave their cells, he knew they must navo a key secreted somewhere, lie com pelled the one on whom his suspicions fell to give up this key, when he found it would open any cell in the prison. It is impossible to tell where this "devil's masterpiece," as Mr.

Greeley calls the key, was concealed. The burglars bad boen working every night for some time in tho hall outside their cells, and it was dicovered that the iron bars which protect the windows of the jail on the outside, had beon more or less filed. The jail is so constructed that a man can stop from the upper tier of cells across the narrow space, or hall, to the windows, which can be easily lowered. The design was of the burglars to saw off tho bars, and slip down them to the ground. Fortunately, Sheriff Nicola discovered them in the nick of time, and frustrated their plans.

A Cbkstnct Dealer's Honesty. A laughable scene was lately served np, gratis, to spectators at the Union Depot. Among other chestnut and apple venders there, there is an elderly, half blind Irishman, who plies his trade with cheerfulness and honesty. One of his lata exhibitions of tbe quality which is held in the proverb to be the best policy, was quito amusing. All tho chestnut dealers chargo five cents per glass of theso nuts, and our hero insists on taking no more than tho current price.

On the occaBin referred to a young man came up to him, and taking two glasses of chestnuts handed tho vendor some scrip, and quickly withdrew. "The old man looked scrutiniaingly at the money with his sole eye, and the many bystanders thought that the young man had cheated him. The dealor called and shouted to the young man, who hurried through the crowds and soemed, in bis persistent deatness, to be a moan scamp. The old man left his baskets and ran shouting for his customer, and finally making him hear, lead him back to the baskets, and paid him a dime scrip. The young man had given twodime instead of two half-dime scrips.

Tbe crowd raised a wholesome shout of surprise and laughter, st tbe unexpected upshot' 0f tbe affair. Oil News. We cull from tho Meadville Republican the following items of oil intelligence It is reported that a good oil well hat been struck above Titusville, near the Hol-1 ifliiv bridges. Responsible parties have purohued 3,000 acres of land on Coldwell Creek, the west branch of Oil Creek, and are about to e-ganize and test the territory. i i .1 v-m trobo in Westmoreland county.

Tbe "show" is said to indicate a fifty barrel well, but by what process of mathematics they arrived at this estimate is not stated. The story about tho "Crow well" in Fayette county if, according to late advices, somewhat exaggerated. It is alleged that there was a great flow of gas but no oil not an unusual circumstance at points remote from genuine Oildom. A eontleman experienced in the oil bus iness and who has important interests in fa be9t tenil0 on 0il Creek, writes us a lettoraoout tne oil lanus on Bugar He save I have taken considerable pains to ex- amine the bugar Creek region, especially through Troy and vicinity, and also the district along Muddy Creek in the neighborhood of Little Cooley, and find they can boast of all the surface indications to be found on Oil Creek, and are at tracting a eood deal of attention. The lands are being bought up from those who will sell, but some ol tne land owners pre for to tost their lands themselves, and i nran.rt.iOTin arA mnktntr tn nut drrfon tat wojis." Our correspondent is so fully convinced of the value of theso landB, that ho has made liberal investments in the Little Cooloy neighborhood, and is preparing to putdown wolls early in the season.

From his high character ind good judgment in oil matters, we are led to expect import- antresults. 1 Master Dudley Walleb. In spite of the snow last night a very large and apprecia tive audience was present at Brainard's Hall yesterday evening, drawn thither by the announcement that Master Dudley Waller, the wonderful boy -elocutionist would give one of his most interesting en tertainments at that time and place. Mas ter Waller delighted and astonished his audience by the wonderful precocity, not only of memory but of intellectual and rhetorical power, which he displayed. Some of his recitations will compare favor ably with those of our moil gifted and most popular readers.

Wo hope that all our readers will embrace the last opportunity of hearing him, which occurs this evening at Brainard's Hall. A Supebior Paper Collab. Paper collars hav0 becom9 universal. Everybody wears 'them. Heretofore tho great complaint brought against them has beon that when te craTat or tie is placed under the' collar has prosonted a rough and nneven sur-per to tna neck.

Messrs, Tainter Jackson have succeeded in this, and offer a most excellent collar to the pnblic, which avoids I this difficulty, and for which they have taken a patent. M. As we have before stated Colonel Clark fell in the battle of Franklin, and it being impossible to bring off his corpse, it wss interred, and passed within the lines of the advancing enemy. When the defeat of Hood in front of Nashville was known, Mr. and Mia. Clark went South and recovered the body. The Colonel was bearing onward into tha fight the colors which had been dropped with tho life of their former bearor, and Bhouling to his men to follow him, when ball struck him in the head.
