The Salt Lake Tribune, Friday. September 24. 1982 1 I TV Fare: Here Comes a Fall Season of Incredible Hunks next month, and then pull even more spectators into its tent with the Super Bowl in January. Although you may not notice it, the networks will be running more commercials in prime time this fall. Because of the inroads made by cable TV, the number of people watching the networks at night has decreased for six consecutive seasons The networks have offset this decline by running more commercials and charging more for them.

The Ford Motor Co will pay more than $8 million for 24 minutes of commercials in the season's biggest mini-senes, "The Winds of War. Commercials on one of the most popular regular scries, "60 Minutes, cost more than $6,000 a second. You foot the bill for that, of course, when you buy products advertised on TV. since the commercial costs are passed on to you So enjoy the new season You paid for it set in his life, William Shakespeare An excellent production of one of his greatest plays, King Lear," will be presented Oct 18 on PBS, with Michael Hordern in the title role. Schedule of Movies Although many people complain about how movies on the networks are censored and repeatedly interrupted by commercials, major films on the little screen always draw a big crowd.

No air dates have yet been set, but some of the more popular new titles to be seen this season are Kramer vs. Kramer," "Coal Miners Daughter" and Star Trek," on ABC, Raging Bull" and "Being There, on CBS. and "Dressed to Kill," on NBC In sports, downtrodden NBC will get a ratings boost because the rotation of blockbuster athletic events among the networks has presented it with both of the biggies in the same season. The peacock network will mop up viewers by the millions with the World Series HOOVER SPECIALS UPRIGHT CONVERTIBLE Large throw away bag four position adjustment to clean all carpets, shag, plush, regular, kitchen, edge cleaning suction power CONCEPT ONE Self-Propelled Extra larqe baq, automatic carpet adjust ment, edge cleaning feature, plus quadraflex By Lee Winfrey Knight-Ridder Newspapers The dominant element the new fall television season is a gallery of fantas-! ucally handsome leading men, a pla- tflon of peacocks designed to flutter the hearts of female viewers of all ages You can call it The Autumn of Incredi-l ble Hunks. Obviously, the networks have noticed that Tom Selleck is the only new male juries star to make a mark on TV this cade The splash made by Selleck 'since his Magnum, 1 series pre-'''miered on Dec.

His column will resume when he returns. are the keenest arrows that a leading man can tote in his quiver. Consider Ted Danson, who stars in a sharp new NBC comedy called Cheers. In his premiere on Sept.

30, Danson is working in the Boston bar he owns when a lady friend phones and leaves him a message saying, Youre a magnificent pagan beast. Probably all you need to know about Danson for the moment is that he is capable, in both looks and attitude, of living up to that extravagant billing. Remington's Premiere Or reflect upon the tall, dark and extremely handsome Pierce Brosnan, who plays the title role in a new NBC crime series called Remington Steele. Remington's premiere episode has scarcely begun on Oct. 1 when he is berated by his boss because he spent $22,000 in one month on roses, perfume, and gowns for his ladies.

The leading man in Matt Houston deep cleaning agitator few more than usual The reason for the slight increase is NBCs disastrous shortfall last season, when it finished a distant last in the network race 11 New Series Seeking to recover, the peacock network is offering 11 new series, more freshmen than any network has set forth in the fall for several years. CBS and ABC each have seven new series, a more customary number of starters As usual, about 40 percent of the new crop are comedies Elev en of the 25 new series are sitcoms Besides Cheers, which is uncommonly good, another pleasing new attraction is CBS "New hart (Mondays), which casts Bob hart as a New York writer who buys an old Vermont inn New hart enjoyed a six-year run in the 1970s on his old Bob New hart Show and his appeal appears to be undiminished After comedies again, as usual the next largest category is crime series, with five entries There is nothing here to make anyone forget such 1970s classics as Columbo and Kojak, although fans of the old series may enjoy Robert Urichs return in the title role of NBCs Gavilan (Tuesdays) Reality Programming Rounding out the schedule are three action-adventure series and three fantasies, and one each in the categories of family drama, medical drama and so called reality programming There are no new lawyer series this season, and variety shows remain as common as an Argentine Rag in the Falkland Islands. Since Hill Street Blues is the only series of extremely high quality developed by the networks during the last year or so, NBCs St Elsewhere (Tuesdays) is being awaited with more than usual interest. The show is an attempt to take the gritty ensemble playing of Hill Streets policemen and transfer it to a hospital staff. Judging from past history, however, it is more likely that the new comedies will determine which network wins the season.

CBS, the champ for the last three seasons, is in good shape again with four new comedies that show promise. Besides Newhart, CBS has Gloria in which Sally Struthers returns in the Gloria Bunker Stivic role she played for eight years on All in the Family, Square Pegs (Mondays), a well-written sitcom about two high school girls, and Filthy Rich (Wednesdays), a satire that had a highly successful run in a three-week tryout last month. Contemporary Version Family dramas are hard to do, although such enduring hits as Little House on the Prairie have shown that they can run for years if they are done well. He's playing Frank Buck, but surely the old game hunters life was never like this.

A ravishing maiden is startled when she meets Buck on Friday in the first half of a special two-part premiere, saying she thought he'd be "jungly and smelly. Feminism's Out Obviously Gloria Steinem, who once said that A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle, was not asked for her advice when the networks drew up this years fall schedule. The network nabobs seem to have noticed the death of the Equal Rights Amendment and decided that all that uproar about equality of the sexes was just a few shrill notes blown away in the w'ind. The beautiful female supporting stars on "Cheers," Remington Steele, "Matt Houston and Bring Em Back Alive are all depicted as highly intelligent, but they might as well be barefoot and pregnant when it comes to competing for prominence with the series handsome heroes. Not to be outdone in the battle of big names, NBC will present Bette Davis next month in "Little Gloria at Last This four-hour mini-series, dates for which have not yet been announced, has been adapted from Barbara Goldsmith's best-selling book about the custody fight over heiress Gloria Vanderbilt. For quality of script, of course, you cant beat a' man who never saw a TV sponsible for improving the job placement rate of vocational students. Just as high school principals must supervise both academic and vocational programs, so can a state school office administrator, Dr. Bumingham explained.

Changed Structure The reorganization will cut the state agencys top-level administration in half and consolidate six divisions into five. In place of the present structure the superintendent, a deputy, two associates and six division administrators the agency would be supervised by the superintendent, four associates and several coordinators. Job duties for the associates and coordinators would be altered, requiring a review of salaries and the recruitment of applicants for those positions. Dr. Burningham wants job candidates by Oct.

19. He said if existing staff members who are not appointed to the top positions wish to stay with the agency, they will be reassigned to other positions. As many as 21 state school office personnel could qualify for an early retirement plan he will propose to the board Friday, he noted. Address Priorities The new administrative structure is designed to address the state school boards priorities, the superintendent said. One of those is statewide planning and research.

Another aim is to spread the state superintendents responsibilities among himself and the four associates, freeing him to create a closer relationship with local school districts and other educational organizations. Chrysler Will Offer High Performer Reuter News Agency DETROIT Chrysler Corporation announced it will start producing high-performance cars named after former race car driver Carroll Shelby and will begin selling the specially designed autos within 90 days. Chairman Lee Iacoeea said that Shelby had been hired as a consultant to help design and sell the cars, which will be marketed for $7,500 to $10,000. He declined to specify the length and terms of the Shelby contract. Iacocca said the cars will be equipped with 110 horsepower, 2.2 liter gasoline engmes designed to get 23 to 25 miles per gallon.

Company Vice Chairman Gerald Greenwald said Chrysler expects to produce 10,000 to 15,000 units during the 1983 model year which starts next month. Vocational education will be enhanced, not hampered, by reorganization of the state Office of Education, according to G. Leland Bumingham, state superintendent. Dr. Burningham said Thursday he hopes to complete his staffs reorganization by mid-October. He will present the plan to the state Board of Education Friday and hopes to open the top administrative posts to applicants Monday.

Because reorganization is not a policy issue, the state board need not formally approve it. However, the superintendents plan for early retirement incentives requires school board endorsement. The new administrative structure places academic and vocational programs within one division. Attention It Needs Dr Bumingham said some educators have questioned that combination at a time when many Utahns are demanding greater attention for vocational education He believes the marriage will give vocational education the attention it needs. The associated superintendent of the new instructional-vocational division will be on the same salary level as Dr.

Bumingham and will have experience in both high school and post-high school vocational programs, he said. Also, he added, the administrator will be re- Sheriff Probes Death of County Man Salt Lake County sheriff's homicide detectives are investigating the apparent murder of a Salt Lake County man whose body was discovered Thursday morning in an apartment at Old Farm condominiums Sgt Ben Forbes identified the victims as James William Skeel. in his 50s, who resided in apartment 17J at 4137 570 East Mr Skeel's nude body was found lying face-down on the bed in the apartment, said Lt.
