You get the idea that these actors have the time of their lives appearing with the likes of Kermit and Miss Piggy, and we share in all their fun. The question everybody is dying to know, of course, is how "The Muppets Take Manhattan" ends. Do Miss Piggy and Kermit get married? Well, you'll just have to see for yourself.

I'm not sure even Kermit himself knows the answer to that one. By Terry Orme Tribune Staff Writer 'At one point in "The Muppets Take Manhattan," Kermit the Frog gazes ottt across the New York skyline and announces, I'm not giving up. Look out Broadway, here we come. It is njoments like this that make the Muppets irresistible. They are so sincere, so determined, that you can't hplp but get caught up in their predicaments, in their lives.

Along the way they meet a shady "producer, played with devilish good humor by Dabney Coleman. Kermit tries every irick in the book, including dressing up as a California hipster, adopting hipspeak and forcing his way into see a legitimate producer, played by John Landis. When on his last nickels and dimes, Kermit meets Pete (Louis Zorich) who owns a restaurant and hires rats as waiters. After meeting Kermit and Miss Piggy and learns of their predicament, he hires them too.

"It's no coffee shop, says the big-hearted purveyor of food. "It's a zoo." His daughter Jenny, played by Juliana Donald, strikes up a friendship with Kermit, making Miss Piggy insanely jealous in the process. Then there's the jogger in Central Park (Gregory Hines) who loans Miss Piggy his roller skates so she can chase the thug who just stole her purse. Miss Piggy becomes a bundle of terrifying vengeance on wheels. After many trials and tribulations, Kermit finds someone interested in "Manhattan Melodies." A father-son team of producers, played by Art Carney and Lonny Price, decides to take the risk and rent out the Bilt-more theater for the Broadway premiere.

Problem is, after everything is decided, and it looks like Miss Piggy will finally get her wish of marrying K'-mit, Kermit disappears. The Muppets Take Manhattan" is a fun, good-hearted movie. Frank Qz, who wrote and directed as well as playing many of the characters, has concocted a winner here. Again, a lot has to do with his use of cameos. The short scenes involving James Coco, Joan Rivers, Elliot Gould.

The reason is simple: The Muppets, not the film and television personalities who appear in cameos, are the stars. The focus is squarely on Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Rowlf and the others. I As Manhattan" begins, we join the muppets as they are graduating from college. As a farewell, they have proceed a musical revue to show their appreciation to the school for, in Hermit's words, letting in a frog, a pig and a couple of chickens.

By some miracle, all have graduated and they want to give something back for the experience. The musical is a hit with the students. One member of the audience goes so far as to claim the show belongs on Broadway. At first the suggestion is taken lightly. But when the Muppets realize they will be going their separate ways unless they find something to do together, they decide that yes, Manhattan Melodies" belongs along the Great White Way.

One night, Alex goes for a new record on the machine which pits contestants against an armada of enemy starships. With a crowd of neighbors watching, the teenager breaks the old record, and this sleepy little trailer park has something to celebrate. Here's where the clever premise of The Last Starfighter comes into play. As it turns out, this video game was placed on earth as a recruitment device, an aptitude test, for star-fighters to fight on the side of the Star League of Planets from its nefarious enemy, the KO-DAN. Alex has proven he has the right stuff to become a starfighter.

The Last Starfighter is a delightful, little movie which borrows extensively from the large budgeted Star Wars trilogy. Starfighter, however, tells a story which is bound to earth. Its about common people who Ond themselves, living the stuff of dreams. Its a little hokey, and youve seen bits and pieces of the story before, but there is an innocence to this movie which wins you over. The biggest success of Starfighter is that it manages to combine the storys warm, human element with a razzle-dazzle space Sdventure.

And when you leave the theater, it's not the war among the stars you remember, its the Characters. Newcomer Lance Guest is the charismatic Alex, a young man whose goal is to leave the trailer court where hes grown up, get an education and go on to bigger and better things. With Guest playing the foie, you can't help but like Alex. The actor brings a sensitivity, a sense of Innate goodness to Alex so that you cant help but cheer him on. Robert Preston does a fine, witty turn as Centauri, an intergalactic starfighter recruiter who uses questionable tactics in order to claim his binders fee.

Prestons performance brings to mind his Professor Harold Hill when he declares that There's trouble right here in the galaxy." Dan OHerlihy contributes a jovial screen persona in the form of Grig, a reptile-like character from a far corner of the galaxy. Soap opera actress Catherine Mary Stewart, and Barbara Bosson, who plays Fay on televisions Hill Street Blues," round out the good cast, playing Alexs girlfriend and mother respectively. 5 The Last Starfighter invites comparisons with a number of movies in recent years. Besides Star Wars" and its clones, there's "Tron," the Disney movie about video games and computers. But director Nick Cpstle and writer Jonathan Betuel haye come up with something fresh, a movie with good low-key performances and a down-to-earth feel that is hll its own.
