The Salt Lake Tribune Wednesday, November 23, 1983 A9 A Tribute to the Original, Traditional, One-Hundred-Percent, Red-Blooded, Two-Fisted, All-American Terms of Endearment has some terrific performances f. stf Rssrl drinking, throwing wild parties, and drinking some more. His lifestyle is in direct conflict with his neighbor, who never loses control. Garrett is the one who shows Aurora there is more to life than maintaining appearances. Terms of Endearment takes viewers on an emotional roller coaster ride.

Sometimes it is clever and funny, sometimes relentlessly depressing. And sometimes you may feel like director-writer Brooks is pulling too hard on the heartstrings. But Winger, MacLaine, Nicholson and company give the proceedings a ring of truth that is completely (something her daughter thought was impossible) and starts having the time of her life (another impossibility). MacLaine keeps her character at a safe distance from the scripts sentimentality. Aurora is a woman who we like, and at times pity.

But Aurora never pities herself; shes a strong woman, and we admire her for it Jack Nicholson gives one of his wonderfully comic performances as Aurora's next-door neighbor, Garrett Breedlove. Garrett is a former astronaut who now fancies himself Houston's most eligible bachelor. He spends his days drinking, swimming in his pool, drinking, taking saunas, By Terry Orme Tribune Staff Writer As its title suggests, Terms of Endearment tells of people and the ways they express their feelings for each other. It is a common subject for the movies, one that often drips with maudlin sentiment. While there are elements of soap opera in this movie, there is an overriding sense of authenticity as well.

Life doesnt offer simple explanations for the ways people grow and change. Neither does Terms of Endearment. This is a story about a daughter and her mother, about how they depend on each other, though are reluctant to admit it, and how they physically move apart, but the bonds remain. The daughter tries to make a future with a man her mother detests. The mother tries to get over the fact that she no longer can shadow her daughter; the news that she is about to become a grandmother adds insult to injury. Its rough sledding for both characters, but with moments that are comical, candid and warm.

Terms of Endearment is the sort of movie which completely involves an audience in both moments of joy and moments of sadness. At one point the script (written by James Brooks who created The Mary Tyler Moore Show) throws the audience a manipulative curve-ball. But it works because Brooks, who also directed the film, gives us characters we believe and like. The director received no small amount Gf assistance in creating these characters from his exceptional cast. Debra Winger gives a terrific performance as Emmy, a young woman trying to be her mother's friend, not her mothers daughter.

Winger nicely underplays Emmy, winning our affection and admiration in her trials with a less than loyal husband, and a dogmatic mother. Emmy is a tragic character, but Winger instills a determination within her that is magnetic; With three children, and trying to make ends meet on her husband's small salary, femmy is a bundle of enviable strength. Shirley MacLaine is Aurora Greenway, who we first meet tiptoeing into her infant daughter's bedroom, certain that the baby has stopped breathing. When the baby starts crying, Aurora is relieved. Young Emmy wails while her mother smiles the beginning of their ironic relationship.

MacLaines is a dynamo performance. Since being widowed, Aurora has become so uptight that it makes you nervous just looking at her.
