I'm sure if you re a follower of receni BTC' football you most have wondered when tie emphasis oo running backs made tie Heta-man Trcphy tie excliaive property of tie bad carriers. 1 For 19 consecutive years, the a I dual award baa I 1 coe to a running I back, and at a time wien BTC John Mooney.

qaarterbacks were makjig tieir marts aa tie outstanding passers ta college ball and could have been considered among tie Heisman voerg favorites. True, Cougar passers have received growing support nationally in what has become something of a popularity poll, but despite tie impressive passing and total offense statistics, BYU quarterbacks haven't been able to gain enough backing for a Heisman Trophy. From tie standpoint of GJford Nielsen, Marc Wilson, Jim McMahon and Steve Young, tie Heisman trend to running backs came at tie wrong time. Consider From 1962 through 1972, only three running backs in 11 seasons gained the Heisman. La 1972.

Flanker Johnny Rodgers of Nebraska was the Last strictly non-running back to wm the award Quarterbacks Pat Sullivan (1971), Jim Plunkett (1970), Gary Beban (1967X Steve Spurrier (1966), John Huarte (1964), Roger Staubach (1963) and Terry Baker (1962) all won the favor of the Heisman voters at the expense of the running backs. Suddenly, Hope When McMahon, with that bushel basket of national records two years ago, couldn't muster enough votes fr the Heisman, jit appeared quar-terbacks were doomed, especially BYU record holders, as serious Heisman contenders. tw? Most experts felt a touch of ympthy for SteveYoansr Young who suc sieve loong McMahoo at BTC. Alter all, when the guy you replaced has more than 40 national records, you have a tough act to fol-low. But all of a sudden.

Young may have the best chance of all the Cougar greats in the Heisman voting I was asked in a straw vote poll the otuer day how 1 would vote, and I couldn't name a logical third pick. There are two standouts, running back Mike Roner of Nebraska, and Young of BYU Of the eight top preseason candidates down to seven now with the loss of Marcus Dupree only Rozier and Greg Allen of Honda State are running backs. This should work to Youngs advantage, because no quarterback this season is in the same statistical league. Turner Gid of Nebraska, Mike Tomcxak of Ohio State, Tom Tumucliffe of Arizona State, and Jeff Hostetler of West Virginia are the top quarterbacks challenging Young for AH-America honors, as well as Heisman votes. If I were betting, I would list Rozier as the favorite, because he is a running back, because hes playing on the potential national championship team, and because more voters know the caliber of Corah usker opposition better than that of BYlTs opponents.

But I certainly think Young is the odds-on cinch to be No. 2 in the voting, and maybe the Heisman voters will realize a running back doesn't have to be the Heisman winner. Certainy in the 1962-72 period when quarterbacks dominated the Heisman voting cone dominated the all-time statistics like the Cougar quarterbacks of recent vintage. Kelley, who is 30 years old, is free to sign with any team that tenders him an offer sheet, but none has so far. Weve heard from some other teams, but we havent been able to accomplish what we want, said Davis. Now it's a matter of letting people (team GM3) see what they have and hopefully finding that what they have is inadequate. While Layden says that the ball's in their court, Davis says that he and Kelley really don't have any moves to make; There's very little choice.

This is not a situation where the Jazz have made a bona fide offer. Ao come in for what the Jazz are offering, I think, is the worst of all possible options. So, unless some sense is made of the situation, he'll start the season on the sidelines. Cy Young Winner If you're a Golden Eagle follower and you think youre seeing things Wednesday, fear not There will be a rink full of familiar faces decked out in Montana's visiting uniforms, including center Alain Lemieux, left wingers John Marked and Perry Anderson, and defenseman Alain Vig-neault all of whom spent not only la3t year with the Golden Eagles but the last two seasons in Salt Lake. It will be a little strange coming back to Salt Lake and playing against them, confided Markeil via telephone from Billings.

Its a little deja vu. The players who are here from the St Louis organization were a little disappointed that St Louis waited so long and couldnt go back into Salt Lake. Its only natural to want to play in front of 3,000 or 4,000 people every night at worse, but Billings is a beautiful city and the people are supporting us. Its not a bad place at all to play. The 10 guys here from St Louis are all aware of what going back to Salt Lake City means.

They're all pretty pumped up to play. Marked, the 27-year-old native of Corawad Ontario, and the sdek-skating Lemieux were two of the more popular players during their days with the Golden Eagles. Marked amassed 33 goals and 27 assists with Salt Lake last season after ringing up 19 goals and 53 assists for 72 points in 69 games during the 1981-82 season with the Golden Eagles. Lemieux, who is currently Montana's leading point producer with three goals and six assists, collected 61 goals and 66 assists in 103 games during the last two seasons in Salt Lake. But the 1982-83 Golden Eagles are off to a slow start in Montana.

The Magic, in last place with a 1-4 record, has given up a league-leading 33 goals in five games. But Marked reminds that part of Montanas sluggish start may be traced to no practice ice and Uttle cohesiveness. We hadnt seen ice for seven days when we went to Indianapolis last week, disclosed Marked, speaking of a disastrous trip which saw the Magic embarrased by 11-6 and 9-0 scores. Were a little upset with ourselves at losing like that last week, but you have to expect that when you havent been on ice for seven days. Were anxious to redeem ourselves a little.

Weve had two-a-day practices the last two days and I think were better tuned. In addition to Marked, Lemieux, Anderson and Vigneault, 1982-83 Golden Eagles Jock Callander, Cary Eades, Dan Wood, Blaine Peerless, John Smyth and Perry Ganchar wid also come home again with Montana Wednesday. Thats 10 former Golden Eagles matching mind and matter with the current Golden Eagles in what promises to be an emotional homecomirg Wednesday. A lot of Montanas players played here last year, so theyd have something to prove, warned Salt Lake Coach J.P. Panse, whose team enters the mid-week encounter after losing four of its last five games ad at home.

They (the Magic) are coming off a disastrous weekend. That, combined with a lot of their players coming back to Salt Lake, should make them play hard. he helped us last year. But he was just beaten out by Hansen. Natt, who appeared in 22 Jazz games last season after being signed out of the CBA in February, played in just four of the seven Jazz exhibitions and totalled 30 minutes. In that time, he took only six shots and made three for a preseason total of six points. Layden, who said that the Jazz will also experiment in practice with JJ.

Anderson at guard, likes the idea of having a roster spot open, in case somebody is cut this week that hed like to add. It certainly appears, though, that the last roster spot wont be going to the seven-foot Kelley, who is holding out Td like to have him, but if hes not here, hes not here, said Layden. Jerry Davis, Kelleys New York agent, said Tuesday that he has not been in contact with the Jzz since By Roger Graves Tribune Sport3 Writer Thomas Wolfe, who has realized fame and fortune for his astute observation that you can never go home again, obviously wasnt acquainted with the gypsy life of a professional hockey player or a close follower of the Central Hockey League You can never go home again? Well, virtually an entire team will come home again Wednesday at 7.30 p.m. in the Salt Palace. In an unusual occurrence made possible by a pair of franchise shifts during the off-season, the Salt Lake Golden Eagles will host the Salt Lake Golden Eagles Wednesday evening in the Salt Palace OK, it will officially be the Golden Eagles entertaining the new Montana Magic in the first regular-season CHL meeting ever between the two clubs.

But, unofficially, it will be the 1982-83 Golden Eagles, farm team of the SL Louis Blues, against the 1983-84 Golden Eagles, whose allegiance stands with the Minnesota North Stars. Asked how Kelley, who is at home in Northern California, feeb about being out at this point, Davis said, Hes annoyed, but thats life. Hed like to be playing. Davis, who reads NBA box scores when he can and takes note of the Jazzs rebounding totals, said, Its just a mystery to me Heres a guy who was second in the league in rebounding (1978-79), and nobodys interested? The Jazz are not the only culprit Look at Dallas. Look at Portland.

If Davis finds it confusing that there isnt some NBA team that can use an experienced center, Layden admitted to being a little confused about something else; I don't understand, when youre 30 and youve got so little time left, why you would waste any of it But I cant worry about it Weve got to move on. (and as Barbara contributed, lots of ice cream sundaes) and those things, but I was still 6-5 and 195 pounX. That Herrmann was a skin-and-bones prep might have kept him out of schools like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northwestern (his mothers alma mater), Kansas and Drake. They recruited him but the rush put on him in the Midwest was nothing bke that of BYU head coach La Veil Edwards and assistant Roger French. I liked what I was being told about BYU and anyway, I would rather be at a school that can win, (ft-21, rather than go to Wisconsin where you get beat bad every year by Michigan and Ohio State, Herrmann said.

French may have been the key The fourth-year Cougar coach was at Minnesota when Herrmann was completing his prep career, and he saw in the Arrowhead High prep in Hartland, Wise, the overall athletic talent displayed in not only football, but basketball, track (Herrmann was a hurdler and long jumper) and baseball. However, Herrmann's family tree hinted that BYU would be his collegiate football destination. You see, Page G-3, Column 4 BYUs Herrmann Pumps Iron, Helps Cougar Defense Grow By Lex Hemphill Tribune Sports Writer The Jazz, who began the 1982-83 season with 11 players on their roster instead of the allowed 12. are doing the same thisTsr season. The club cut ft-? foot-3 guard Kenny Natt Tuesday upon returning to! Salt Lake City from a 10-day trip, and that go the Jazz down to 11 players.

Unless the Jazz suddenly reach agreement Kenny Nail with free agent Rich Kelley or sign somebody else, then it will be an liman team that will be opening the -season for Utah Friday night in Denver against the Nuggets. This is the team were taking, unless we pick up another player between now and Friday, which I dont see as likely, said Jazz Coach-General Manager Frank Layden Tuesday after running the team through an afternoon practice that was to get the players reacclimated to the high altitude. The upshot of Tuesday's move is that Tom Boswell, the 30-yeardd forward, has made the team and has completed a beat-the-odds comeback journey. Just a year ago, Boswell was at the low point in his life and had trouble with the law in Denver. Nobody gave him a shot at returning to the NBA, where he hasnt played since the 1979-80 season with Utah.

Now he will be in uniform at an NBA regular-season game again Friday night in Denver, iromcal- iy- One of the reasons Layden took a chance on Boswell was the 6-foot-8 forwards ability to fill in some at center. Layden knew that Boswell might be needed in case Kelley couldnt be signed, and now Boswell is on the team. The choice to cut Natt also confirms what was recognized a couple cf weeks ago that 6-6 rookie Bob Hansen was having a more impressive preseason than Natt in their fight for the fourth guard spot Hansen, a third-round draft pick from Iowa, is on the team now, for sure. Layden decided he could cot down to 11 players and go without Natt because I was satisfied with the experiment with Adrian (Dantley) in the backcourt That would give us five guards, and with Kenny it was six. He just became a victim of the numbers.

I really liked Kecny and By Dick Rosetta Tribune Sports Writer PROVO Brigham Young University defensive tackle Jim Herrmann looked down from his flying level of ft feet, 6 inches and, tucking his shirt in around a 251-pound torso, revealed that one day not so long ago, he was skinny and scared. My, how times change. Now, he's brawny and brave. From a 195-pound, 17-year-old recruit in 1980 who was in awe of the size of Cougar linemen like Glen Ti- tensor and Brad Anae, Herrmann has blossomed into a tenacious part of BYUs three-man defensive front, and shares the team lead in quarterback sacks with 11. That Herrmann would do well on defense, given his chance to start, was never a concern for this eastern Wisconsin native.

I was recruited because I had quickness. They (BYU) were looking at my quickness and height as perhaps a tight end candidate, Herrmann said Tuesday as he and his mates got down to serious business in anticipation of the instate battle with Utah State Saturday at Provo. But weight has always been a concern for the big-framed Herrmann, and wjien be moved in as backup to.
