FRIDAY. January, 6, 1899. Lawyers and litigants don't seem to know it, but they can get their sales and all legal advertising done in this paper for just half what it will cost in the Enterprise. DSheriff Freeman reports 2400 poll taxes collected up to Jan'y 1st inst. This is a good showing and proves that a few of our citizens intend to keep on voting despite the attempts of the ring to throttle them.

On account of the high license all the saloons in this parish remained closed Monday morning except two in this city-Hughes Aaron's (Phoenix) on Front and Jaffa's on CLARKE has recuperated his Stock of Fine Jewelry, and is to fill all orders for New ear. Some of the saloon men, and perhaps others, hoped that the Police Jury at its session this week would lower the license on saloons like some of the other parishes have done, but our Police Jury did not conmpromise itself by repealing a measure before it had been tried, and which. would have the appearance of a bargain. The room was darkened and lamps wore lighted, and their brilliancy seem to say to the bride and the handsome groom, "A bright future is before you. E. Reed, the new paster of this and Cane River Baptist churches, arrived here from Lonisville, last Friday morning accompanied by his wife. He held services at the church Sunday morning and evening, and was well received. He is a scholary gentleman and a flunent speaker, and Mrs. Reed is a most excellent and accomplished lady.

Our good friend Mr. M. N. Bandaries of Grappe's Bluff, was in town Saturday to pay his taxes, and renew his subscription, Mr. S.

F. Olden of Boise City, Idaho, were here Monday to see our Bridge committee in reference to the Monroe and Natchitoches railroad. They asked for more time after Jan'y 23rd, when the limit to begin building expires.
