establishing a new two-round Showdown Classic record aren't enough already First Bies was the second leading event winner among the Seniors a year ago Bob Charles won five events Bies won three And after the tour he ruled the New Zealand Open in Auckland in November downing Charles Casper and Miller Barber among others "It was especially significant to me the biggest win in two years really because it was part of their regular Australian Tour" said Bies "And I don't think I was ever paired with anybody older than 27" Second and probably most revealing is that the guy shot a tounamnent second-round record 67 and then was tied for the lead with five holes to play on the final day here just a year ago "I think I was tied going off of 14 but Tom Shaw birdied No 14 and I caught the lip of the bunker at 15 and I took a double bogey and it was over I was gone" Bies recalled Shaw won in '89 and Bies finished with a 1-over 73 and a 212 total The fact is the "stars" of the Senior Tour are not in the final pairing Sunday Bies who's now played 72 holes of golf with just one bogey counting the final 36 holes of the Senior stop in Albuquerque last week will go out in the feature Showdown Classic (fSPN 6 pm Baseball Mets at Giants (TNT 6 pm NFL Exhibition Football Vikings at Browns By Bob Donohoe Tribune Sports Writer Chris Gies never gave the Trappers a chance Saturday night The result was an 8-3 victory for the Butte Copper Kings who leaped past the Trappers into first place in the Pioneer League's Southern Division Gies used an effective assortment of pitches to keep the Trappers guessing all night He retired the leadoff batter in every inning and didn't let the Trappers get to third base until the eighth inning By then it was too late "You saw the art of pitching" said Copper Kings manager Bump Wills "Gies just kept the batters off balance He's a smart pitcher and he throws his breaking balls for strikes" The Trappers took away Gies' shutout bid in the eighth and and scored two more runs in the ninth inning But even Kevin McMullan's lOth home run of the season and a run-scoring single by Ken Briggs weren't enough to keep Gies from throwing a complete game Wills thought about removing Gies after Briggs' hit with two outs "I knew he was gassed" Wills said "I had my mind set when I went to the mound that I was going to take him out But he and Butte catcher Greg Blevins ganged up on me After that I was rooting for him" "If it was a close game I would have been out of there" said Gies who improved to 6-2 "But I talked Wills into giving me one more hitter" That hitter was John Urcioli and Gies struck out the Salt Lake shortstop to record his league-leading fifth complete game It's an accomplishment of which Gies was proud "Especially at this level" he said If people higher up in the Texas Rangers organization see my complete games I'll havi! a better chance to move up faster" Typically Gies got to the end without overpowering the opposing hitters He struck out five but he walked just one Trapper all night "That just shows he's throwing strikes" said Wills "We've got a real good defense" said Gies They make my job easier" Stott Photo by Al Hartmann Salt Lake third baseman Tom Duf fin tries to stop a wild throw by catcher Steve Keighley The error allowed Butte's Todd Guggiana to score passes for 85 yards in BYU's first of two major scrimmages Working mostly with the second-team offense against the first defense Evans connected on eight straight throws Other offensive highlights included Detmer's touchdown passes of 37 yards to receiver Eric Drage and 37 yards to halfback Matt Bellini Bellini's 46-yard halfback pass to Brent Nyberg: halfback Stacey Corley's 64- yard TD run and two nifty open-field runs after catching passes: and strong running by fullbacks Peter Tuipulotu and Scott Charlton Defensively the Cougars showed signs of a much better pass rush than last season "We're making good progress- said Edwards The Cougars will scrimmage again Wednesday and continue two-a-day practices through Friday when they'll cut back to prepare for the Sept I opener at Texas-El Paso The hitting was good and the effort was good but the executions lacked at times on both sides" Edwards noted "Weve got a lot of work to do in the See D-2 Colunin 3 and the crowd of 7504 started pouring out of Derks Field 'It wasn't bad pitching" said Trappers catcher Steve Keighley The hits kept falling and pretty soon everybody's thinking We should have been out of this three hits ago It just went from there" Where it went was back to Gies and the Trappers just couldn't get a break against him "We never really put any pressure on him" said Salt Lake manager Nick Bel-See D-3 Column 2 So did the Copper Kings hitters who put the game out of Salt Lake's reach with a five-run outburst in the sixth inning The explosion came after Trappers left-hander Rod Nettnin was forced to leave the game with a strained forearm Nettnin 4-3 had given up just one hit through five innings Butte's Todd Guggiana led off the sixth with a double to right field With one out Nettnin left and Dave Alexander relieved Three doubles an error a single and one Salt Lake pitcher later the Copper Kings led 6-0.
