Is nothing sacred? Next they'll be talking about throwing out aging champions watch out John McEnroe and doing away with "predominantly white" although Andre Agassi isn't around to press hot-pink power on the good stewards of the All England Lawn Tennis Club Reputations certainly don't guarantee respect as former wunderkinder and defending champions Boris Becker and Steffi Graf are finding out by the beginning of the second week and the men's singles final arguably the most important and certainly the most watched tennis match in the entire year is often played on a surface that is simply not up to scratch" says prominent British tennis writer Richard Evans "It is not the groundsman's fault Grass is just not destined to remain pristine after the likes of Becker and Lendl have roared up and down it for a fortnight like 10-ton trucks" Evans in urging Wimbledon officials to tackle the problem by the end of the century says the "only possible alternative" to grass is synthetic grass preferably one that improves on the sand-based types currently used by many clubs utterly dismisses the hard-court surfaces used at the US and Australian Opens Wimbledon officials may equally dismiss his suggestion or recommendations for changes made by others Can anyone really imagine calling the place the All England Synthetic Lawn Tennis Club? Tradition gets the nod over fashion here For the moment at least the lawns are safe and so are the strawberries and champagne Only old champions are in danger of fading away week and the the most im- Itched tennis played on a scratch" says Richard Evfault Grass is tine after the oared up and 3n trucks" 1 officials to the century ve" to grass is hat improves ntly used by 3es the hardnd Australian ually dismiss idations for inyone really England Syn fashion here wns are safe I champagne ger of fading Christian Miniussi as the Czechoslovakian native and Connecticut resident renews a quest for the only Grand Slam title to elude him Graf seeded No 1 among the women will be trying to regain the respect of the teenie boppers particularly 16-year-old Monica Se les who drubbed Graf in their last two matches the German and French Opens Graf who begins Tuesday against West German compatriot Claudia Porwik won Wimbledon the past two years and has been ranked No 1 since 1987 but her dominance would be imperiled by a loss here The grunting and giggling Se les a Yugoslav who lives in Florida is hardly the only teen to take aim at the 21-year-old Graf Floridian Jennifer Capriati 14 the youngest seed in Grand Slam history at No 12 is taking the leap from the juniors at Wimbledon last year where she won the doubles with Meredith McGrath and reached the quarters in singles Another Floridian Mary Joe Fernandez 18 was playing up to the form that saw her reach the finals of the Australian Open in January where she gave Graf a tough time before succumbing 6-36-4 But she had to pull out of a semifinal at the main women's warmup in Eastbourne last week and her Wimbledon prospects are doubtful But in all the excitement over youth no one should overlook Martina Navratilova who may be making her last serious bid for a record ninth Wimbledon singles title Navratilova 33 is seeded No 2 and appears to have an easy draw with an opening-round match against Sophie Amiach of France Graf Se les and Capriati are all on the other side of the draw Winning at Wimbledon and breaking Helen Wills Moody's 52-year-old record has become a virtual obsession for Navratilova who skipped the Australian and French Opens to prepare for Wimbledon She won four tournaments this year but was trounced by Se les 6-1 6-1 on clay in the Italian Open Navratilova's fellow Czechoslovakian native Hana Mandlikova announced her retirement from singles competition after Wimbledon "I'm like an orange with the juice squeezed out" she said and Navratilova is thinking of hanging up her racket too A victory by Navratilova surely would fulfill her dream and make quitting easier But even a loss and the prospect of having to work harder next year to come back could hasten the end for the player who brought power to the women's game If the winds of change are blowing among the players a thunderstorm may be gathering about the officials of Wimbledon who have managed to balance tradition with progress since they ushered in the Open Era in 1968 There is serious talk of enlarging the Centre Court stands adding a retractable roof or building a new show court nearby with a retractable roof McEnroe who opens Tuesday against Derrick Rostagno called last week for a glass dome to be placed over the courts But perhaps the most radical suggestion would cut to the essence of this most cherished tennis championship: the grass The rain-swollen lawns gleamed during a brief spell of sunshine last week each court looking just right for the start of play But the nag say critics is that by the end of the first week the courts will begin to look scruffy "No matter how perfect the climate the Centre Court almost invariably looks a mess Becker a three-time Wimbledon winner finds himself the mere second seed behind Ivan Lendl who hasn't won here in 10 attempts Becker at least will have the honor of opening Monday's play on the lush fresh turf of Centre Court taking on a late and no doubt trembling qualifier Luis Herrera of Mexico Lendl opens on Court 1 against Argentina's Mets Sweep Phi is on Teufers Hit Hit Earnhardt Holds Off Irvan for Miller 400 Win I i I i (' I tr''''' hi didn't gloat when it happened "It wasn't good or bad I didn't cheer or anything" Earnhardt said after winning the race at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn Mich "I just gave a sigh of relief Bill 'looked like he had us covered "Then I knew there was the No 4 car Ernie Irvan left to race It wasn't over" Elliott led 102 of the 200 laps on the two-mile high-banked oval and 'appeared ready to wrap up his first victory of the year with ease But a plume of smoke from the rear of the car signaled the end of his race on lap 186 Earnhardt's Chevrolet Lumina inherited the lead when Elliott's engine blew but Irvan drove his Oldsmobile Cutlass into the top spot on lap 188 and held Earnhardt off for eight laps Finally however the more experienced driver asserted himself Earnhardt moved on top to stay at the finish line on lap 195 and holding off Irvan the rest of the way to win by just 014 seconds Portland 200: Michael Andretti charged to the lead at the start and then held off a sobering reality that they had let their firm grip on first place slip away "They outplayed us three days and they won three" A's Manager Tony LaRussa said Sunday after Dan Pasqua's lOth inning home run gave the White Sox a 3-2 victory over Oakland "It makes us understand now what we have to do" Pasqua led off the inning with an opposite-field shot giving the White Sox a three-game sweep of Oakland that moved them to within one game of the A's "I don't know about this business of being a contender" Chicago Manager Jeff Torborg said "Don't forget this is only June but this club is not a to advance finishing third in their group And he had done little against Brazil spending more time lying on the ground than touching the ball "Diego has not been fully fit" Bilardo said referring to a sore ankle that kept him out of practice for much of the week "He played because his name is Maradona "He has an iron will He is always being fouled but he takes it and he takes it and he takes it some more" And then he gives the pass that produces the miracle Train conductors and controllers risking possible prison terms began a nationwide 24-hour strike Sunday The wildcat strike was called by fans Continued From D-1 other day like Sunday The third inning was their undoing when the Trappers took advantage of three Copper Kings errors and four hits to break the game open Salt Lake left-fielder Dennis Kidd led off with a single then moved all the way to third base after a wild pick-off throw by right-hander Brian Kidd scored on a ground out oy Mike Moberg Rod Bargas walked and act After John Urcioli walked Ed Garclyk blooped another ball into center field The hit scored Schifman and another error let Harris and Garczyk score This time Butte catcher Victor Reyes threw the ball into deep center field while tryng to catch Garczyk going to second base Sheetz gave up seven hits and six Tuns (just two were earned) and suffered his first loss of the season But he wasn't the only ineffective Copper Kings pitcher Right-hander Bobby St Pe gave up Tour runs (two earned) in two-thirds of an inning of mrork left-hander Scott Erickson was tagged for two runs in 123 innings Steve Surico suffered through a two-inning three-hit six-run (five earned) nightmare and Tim Wells mopped up with a one-inning two-run effort The beneficiary of the Trappers outburst was right-hander Willie Ambos who ran his record to 2-0 with five innings of work He scattered three hits and gave up just on run on a fourth inning double by Todd Guggiana "Thankful that's all you can be" said Ambos "I threw 54 pitches in five innings and get a 'W' I'm not going to ask any questions" Right-hander Dave Alexander picked up where Ambos left off holding the Copper Kings to just two hits and one run over the last four innings The blemish on his day was a ninth-inning solo homer by Castellano Switch-hitting catcher Ken Briggs who went 3-for-5 Sunday hit his second homer in as many nights with a
