But their perspective will be differeat than most spectators As the designer and builder of at least eight of the floats in the parade they can't relax and let out a sigh of relief until the last of their floats winds its way through Liberty Park "We spend the day at the parade and then go home and konk out" Mrs Richards said "As the 24th approaches we work late hours and spend a lot of time putting the finishing touches on the floats" "We don't like parades as much as we once did" she said jokingly Parade spectators get to view the finished floats complete with bright-colored floral sheeting and a smiling queen But few realize the work behind them Mrs Richards said "It's not a bowl of cherries" she lamented "It's hard time-consuming and expensive" As design director for Modern Display 700 424 South Mrs Richards has been designing floats for seven years After studying graphic design in college she says designing floats took some adjustment "Anyone who has studied graphic design is taught less is more The idea is a simple clean look" Mrs Richards said Designing floats however is just the opposite "You want flash glitter and lots of color" Initially the float-making process begins in February That's when Mrs Richards meets with customers to discuss the theme of the float In most cases she says customers bring her a rough sketch of the float In other cases she'll draw one up After the customer has approved the design for the float the actual construction doesn't begin until May The base of the float is a wooden float bed with a hole in the middle cut out for a car Workers strip a larger-sized automobile down to its frame and insert it into the float-bed hole They then begin working on the major design of each float For example for KSL-TV's float they would nose Other children giggle and move forward following suit Who could be generating such affection? Its the Muppets and wherever the lovable furry creatures from television and Hollywood appear they're sure to be greeted by flocks of children Last weekend thousands of toddlers and grade-schoolers about to begin school July 29 on the year-round program in parts of West Valley City visited the Utah debut of Jim Ilenson's Muppets Traffic Safety Show at Valley Fair Mall The lavish production using Muppet characters on a fake movie set to film safety lessons for children in autos buses and on the street will tour more than 100 sites throughout the country for three years The show continues this weekend at the Fashion Place Mall belote leaving Utah "I like Miss Piggy" whispers 7- year-old Kelsey Mackay She just blushes and clasps her hands if she's asked any other questions The moving miniature cars bright lights and Muppet music whirling around the mock picket fence of the show excite all the children This was the intention when Detroit-based Plymouth Division of Chrysler Motors embarked on the public relationschild safety project in 1986 According to project publicist Kimberly Fitzgerald the company has spent 12800 hours designing the 45 module segments which make up the 2000 square-foot set Eight computer systems animate 40 Muppet characters and four six person cars via a mile-and-a-half Di wire The whole contraption with six full-time crew members in two semitrailer trucks requiring 32 man hours to assemble Miss Piggy is part of it a respleqdent 5-feet long from snout hairs to ham hocks in a gray dress and silvttr sequins singing about looking "leftright-left" before crossing the street She's joined by emcee Kermit the Frog comedian Fozzy the Bear uncouth Animal and the indescribable Gonzo plus a cast of formally clad penguins The characters sing and act out precautions such as fastenink seat belts stopping twice before crossing the street and getting eye contact with bus drivers when passing before the vehicle They also distribute guidelines in pamphlet form to parents "That was fun!" gasps Melissa Tasker eight Breathlessly she tell her grandmother "That was embarrassing I was on a TV screen and1 said 'Oh The TV screen complete with video camera which records the children comes at the end of the eight-minute ride The basic safety lessons were derived from National Safety Town Center in Cleveland Ohio Kelsey Mackay never much for words dashes to her mother's sift after the ride What did she learn? fringe and anywhere from 100 to 1500 feet of tinsel or other material Unlike the floats that appear in larger parades such as the Rose Bowl Parade or Macy's those in the Days of '47 Parade are not covered with fresh flowers According to Mrs Richards it is not unusual for a Macy's Parade float to cost in excess of $200000 Still having a float made for the Days of '47 Parade isn't cheap "Our floats have ranged from $7500 to $15000 with the average float costing $8000" Mrs Rich ards said But as she points out companies and corporations actually find it is a cheaper means of advertisement "They have a built-in captive audience plus they are showing they are involved in the community and are doing their civic duty" Mrs Richards remarked Jerry Dunyon the Days of '47 Inc's parade chairmen says this year's parade will feature 38 business- and government-sponsored floats and 33 "historical" floats Of those Modern Display has eight entrants including the float the red white and blue Utah Jazz float the Pepsi Co float and the Sports Park float So on Monday when most people are sitting in their lawn chairs along Main Street or are perched in front of their television sets enjoying the parade Jana Richards and Randy Vuyk will be nervously awaiting the arrival of their floats at the Liberty Park finish line Their vacation begins July 26th Only then can they relax at least until next knew how to do it" the chief said The Sandy Department was also first in the state to buy a device for extricating auto-accident victims known as the Jaws of Life The city could not afford the Jaws but Chief Clough felt they were needed The Jaws were received on credit and the $7000 price tag was later paid with money raised by holding dances and raffles it won't slow him down he said "I'm a person who doesn't sit around" he said "I'm big and good-looking but not lazy" he joked Jokes aside being fire chief for one of the nation's fastest-growing cities is not a job for a lazy man When Chief Clough joined the Sandy Fire Department in 1956 it was a 20-man volunteer force with two fire trucks one a 1929 Model-A Ford the other a 1941 Ford At that time there were 3200 people under the department's protection That number has now grown to about 100000 A similar ommunity fund-raising drive raised $35000 in 90 days to buy Sandy's first ambulance he said The chief has seen many serious accidents in his time many of them Involving fatalities As a novice firefighter the first auto-accident victim the chief attempted to help died screaming curses at those working feverishly to Thanksgiving I don't think there is an event in a person's life I haven't chopped up because of an emergency" Chief Clough said The chief retired from the fire business recently which should ensure he
